We usually go up to Fredericksburg to go to Augusta Vin for a tasting. She was a little disappointed when I pulled into Eckhardt Orchards. I'm not a fan of cling peaches. I was excited to see the Harvester freestone peaches were available. They are definitely a larger peach. They also have a lot of other produce available, but the target was peaches this time. It's always nice and breezy here. So I bought some Harvester peaches with the intent of making a peach crisp. Skins on for me. My wife and I tasted the peaches that I was cutting up. I have to say, some of the best peaches we have tasted. Intense peach flavor. I made the peach crisp and our guests remarked about the intense peach flavor. This is a must stop when driving to Fredericksburg.

Their store on 87, outside of Fredericksburg proper is a 25 minute drive from our house in the hill country. We do this every weekend during peach season - from mid-May to mid - September. There is nothing like eating fresh peaches from Fredericksburg and Eckhardt has been providing great peaches from their peach orchard. From the clingstone varieties in May until the freestone varieties in June, July and August, their peaches are top notch. Also, they sell cantaloupes, squashes, tomatoes and other vegetables in season. The watermelons are big and juicy. I believe they get them from other farms in the valley. If you want to have an adventure, drive to their store in Fredericksburg and enjoy. They have the friendliest folks working there and will help you with any questions. If you ask, they will carry what you bought to your vehicle! I just love going there every weekend or any chance I get to buy fresh peaches!

Everything looked amazing. Lots of fresh, local produce. Several local purveyors were present, too, such as Texas Olive Ranch and CKC Farms Goat Cheese. Everyone was happy to speak with you about their goods. There was even brick oven pizza made on the spot. We ordered a peach, yes, peach and goat cheese pizza along with a margarita pizza to accompany our fresh figs, blackberries, bread, peach & chipotle goat cheese and aged balsamic vinegar...all from the farmers' market. I could easily have added more, but we won't have room to transport it all home when we leave town. They have live music, too, which was very pleasant. Smiles abounded everywhere and you couldn't find a stranger.

On our visit there was a beer vendor, wine tasting along with a traveling pizza oven making pizzas. This is not a big farmers market and there were just over a dozen vendors. Four of them were cooking up food. Plenty of picnic tables to sit at in the same park that hosts the annual October fest. They even had a folk singing duo which added to the ambience.

Usually I love it when stores offer samples because it's easy for me to weed out the things that I thought I might have wanted, but then didn't enjoy. At Lock Stock & Barrel, it's damning, because each item tastes better than the last and I start filling my arms with more than I can carry! If you're not careful, you will spend a fortune in here... But if you are careful, where's the joy? The only suggestion I have for this place is that they start carrying their shirts in larger sizes. In addition to the syrups and honey and dips in my arms, there was also a shirt I wanted to pile on the top of my haul but I had to forgo that one because their largest size was a medium :( Definitely bring your tastebuds and your sense of adventure and of course your wallet and have a great time here!

It has salsas, jams, spices, and a variety of other things. They also have tasters if you want to try some of the items, a bakery and a small sitting area. Overall Lock Stock & Barrel is a store that has a variety of local and specialty foods with friendly people that work there.
