Twelve Eatery - Vegan chocolate torte with blood orange sorbet

Twelve is a restaurant specialising in vegan food and drinks: the entire menu is free from animal…read moreproducts and all the drinks are free from sulphites. Most of the food is prepared on the premises, i.e. they don't buy in factory-made meat substitutes. The restaurant itself is decorated in a modern take on art deco, in pinks and greens, with subdued lighting. There is a main eating area at the front and a smaller area at the rear, past the bar area. The rear area has a view into the kitchen if you like to see your food being prepared. We had the Twelve veggie-burger and a Tofu Teriyaki, followed by the chocolate torte, the dulce-de-leche cheesecake and a mango sorbet. The food was very good (be warned, the veggie burgers are very filling): full of flavour, and easy to forget you were eating vegetarian food. The puddings were especially good (the blood orange sorbet is to die for). We also had two alcohol-free beers and an organic Picpoul de pinet (both very nice). They provided tap water for free. Service was very friendly and possibly slightly too helpful, in terms of spelling out their vegan credentials in detail. It was also very relaxed - in the sense of being just a little too slow for us. But the overall experience was very enjoyable, and they were certainly doing good business (booking is recommended on Friday and Saturday evenings). The total bill came to £110 for three people, two courses each, with wine/beer.

The first thing I was struck by was the decor. It feels a bit like Art Deco era Miami -- very chill, good energy. Then you meet the staff who could not be more welcoming, knowledgeable, or passionate. Never thought I'd be so excited about kombucha but their passion is infectious. Then the food. The food! *emphatic chef's kiss* We got the burrata, scallops, burger, and cheesecake. I was only able to get one pic before I couldn't stop myself from devouring everything. I anticipate that I'll be at Twelve so often that they'll start charging me rent. Worth it.

This may have something to do with the fact that Troy is a restaurant and not just a take away. They serve Turkish and Mediterranean food, as well as the most refreshing tea in the world! The place is run by really friendly people who take a pride in what they do. The atmosphere is very relaxed, and it's a place where a lot of the locals pledge their allegiance. Business is not as brisk as it used to be a few years ago. There are now too many restaurants and takeaways doing the same thing, providing too much competition along the City Road. Troy was one of the first, and thankfully they haven't lost the passion for what they do. A kebab will set you back about £6.00, but there's enough food for two people, making them really well priced for what you get.

Another Turkish kebab house? I think not…read more On the off chance you visit this place and not for the kebab on the night out you should try there charcoal grilled specials, this being their saving grace and unique offering for the area. The have takeaway food as you would expect and some interesting items on the menu. I'm always impressed to see the food I ordered be prepared and cooked in the front of house. The doner kebab is exactly like any you'd find down the street but competes well with Adonis kebab takeaway.
