Ambiance (3.5/5): The Davenport was packed even on a Sunday evening. To the point where no seats were available. Luckily for me, about 10 minutes in, the lady next to me left so I was able to snag a seat at the bar. There are also high tops and a small patio out front. The Davenport is a pretty chill establishment, but one with a loyal following. Service (4/5): A full bar usually means service issues. There was a component of that here. It took a little while to order my drink and later to get the bartender's attention to close my tab. Given how popular The Davenport is, your experience will likely be the same. Luckily, they make up for it by going above and beyond with their cocktails. I'll get to that in a second. Food (N/A): I was on a liquid diet, and to be honest, while I'm not 100%, I don't think they have food. There was a guy walking around selling boudin though right when I was about to leave. Drinks (4.5/5): The Davenport is known for their martinis so that's what I recommend going with. It's a The Cheesecake Factory-type menu with 40 or so martinis to choose from. Paradox of choice situation. I ended up going with the gummy bear which was a solid cocktail, although a bit too sweet for my taste. Here's what makes Davenport next level... their martinis pack a punch. I always appreciate a stiff drink. And on top of that, they often give you more than your cocktail in a martini glass. There's usually quite a bit leftover so they'll pour that in another glass for you. Basically a drink and a half for the price of one! Given the strength of the cocktails and the quantity, it's definitely a good deal. The Davenport has been around for a while and has become a well-known spot. As you walk in, you'll be greeted by the 70's/80's/90's bar music of rock/disco and chessboard floor pattern. So they specialize in three things: cocktails/liquors, cigars, and patio seating. When you combine all three of those, it's the perfect bar. Cigars are sold here too and they have cutters and plenty of torch lighters to spark them up. Outside on their patio deck has plenty of seating with some of those heaters in case you houstonians can't handle the cold. Only gripe is I wish they had a larger wine selection as they only have bordeuax or a red blend. Not sure if they serve white wines either. But there's wine bars for that. That makes it easy to support this place, although both the cocktail and food menus offer fewer choices than before. The space still feels familiar, but the music selection has changed, and the volume was noticeably higher. The crowd was mixed, with mostly working professionals enjoying an after-work outing. The restaurant appeared fully staffed, yet service was somewhat slow. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, but a little more attentiveness and urgency would improve the experience. I want this place to survive and thrive. A few suggestions: add more simple drink options, such as wells and "you-call-its," lower the music during happy hour and dinner, and serve the martinis thoroughly shaken and ice-cold. A little more pep in the service team's step would also go a long way. The happy hour value is there, and I'm rooting for this place.
