Leave all these judgements at the door as you perch upon the bar stools and high tables outside Next Door Kitchen & Bar (next door to Ole on Little Stanley Street) or take a table inside. Instead, focus on what they do well: small plates and cocktails. The cocktail list is not extensive by any means, but what they do do they do well. During our UYE I tried the specially concocted Rudolph Valentino (Scotch, Martini Rosso, Cherry Brandy and Cranberry Bitters) which was interesting. The flavour that hit the front of your palette changed by the time it reached your back palette. I didn't mind it. The Clover Club (which was too sweet for my cocktailing like) and a sip of an 18th Amendment (matusalem rum, red wine, violet liqueur, cherry jam, vanilla and nutmeg) a friend ordered, which was easily my pick of the bunch. As for food, try a little or try a lot. The small plates are made to be shared. For our table of 6 we ordered a few of the chips with truffled parmesan (win), beetroot and blue cheese arancini balls (win) with black garlic aioli and baby chard, and my favourite of them all the slow cooked lamb neck, maple roasted pumpkin, fire roasted onions, hazelnut and Maleny yoghurt. Simple flavours that packed a punch when grouped together. Worth every penny of the $19.50 this particular share plate will set you back. There were a few moments where drinks ordered were forgotten or were slow to be delivered but given the patronage on this Wednesday night it was easily forgiven. One bar tender for the number of people in the venue and anyone could understand the minor delays. The staff at Next Door were dear and we were regularly checked on to make sure everything was to our liking. It is the little things.

They light tea candles on your table around dusk. Everyone was very kind and checked on how we were doing periodically. The drinks tended to take a little time to be delivered. We weren't sure if it was because of lack of staff or slow service. Once the drinks were delivered, all was forgiven. The food was excellent as well! We tasted the gangster wings, truffle parmesan fries, beetroot and blue cheese arancini, black garlic aioli, baby chard, and slow cooked lamb neck, maple roasted pumpkin, fire roasted onions, hazelnut, and maleny yogurt. Best thing you ask? LAMB. No question. It was so tender and the roasted pumpkin was an amazing compliment. I could have devoured the entire place but since we are to share the plates- I did just that. I recommend the fries if you want a nice appetizer to share or a comfort food with a twist. The place was quite crowded on a Wednesday and I loved the 1920s theme. This would be a fun place to go on a date or take a friend. It was fun seeing all sorts of groups coming. Will definitely be back! Shout out to Lani for organizing the event! Tip: If you come in before 5:30, you can get slingers and wings for $15.

Not many people are familiar with Nyonya food, but to give you an idea, it's a mix between chinese and malay and the techniques used to cook the food go back to ancient China. Let's not go into that. My family are from Malaysia and we are from chinese descent meaning only one thing. They are highly critical of authentic Malaysian and Singaporean food. They are also very critical of Nyonya food, and as word spreads far and wide in the asian community, thank goodness the reviews from this place were good when we ate there. The staff are very professional, the restaurant is decorated to represent a little eatery in olden China, I quite liked it, but my pram pretty much bumped into everything on the way to the table, so I kind of felt bad. They did the typical asian restaurant thing, fit as many tables and chairs into a small space as possible. Not sure what this means for the chi of the place. We ordered the 'Wat Dan Ho' a wet version of the 'Chow Kuey Teow' and a Salty Plum Spare Rib (me and my ribs gung ho it was!), the Nyonya Kapitan Curry Chicken and a plate that isn't on the menu. It is the typical dish chinese usually order to celebrate a huge birthday, a wedding or the first month of the life of your baby. So the c'est la important dish - it is a cold cuts dish with jellyfish, barbeque pork, cold boiled salted chicken and some other tidbits. I have to say I give all the dishes a 3.5/5 because they were all pretty consistent with what we were used to eating prior to coming here... none of them in particular stood out, but my family and I are pretty hard markers. I think Little Singapore still trumps Little Nyonya, but it's worth a try, the dishes to the non critical people would probably taste pretty damn yummy.

Rice served with BBQ pork, crispy pork belly and roast duck* There are two other surrounding restaurants that specialise with a similar menu. May give them a try, but they will have a lot of expectations if am I am to compare them to Lil Nyonya. * the roast duck is a little hit and miss. Sometimes you'll get a generous serving of meat. Vegetarians and gluten intolerants don't despair, Litse has menu options for you too, with an impressive amount of options being gluten free and healthy. You can also choose a cheese platter from 10am onwards which makes someone like me squeal in delight. Litse also has a range of wines for those enthusiasts, but also a kids menu for the little ones. There is something for everyone and it all has a touch of easy sophistication. Litse also has an all day breakfast menu with traditional bacon and eggs, omelette, and free range eggs on sourdough, just to name a few options. I was expecting that the place he mentioned, the Liste Lounge was going to be some type of tip rat burger place. Man, never in my mind have I ever been willing to be more wrongly surprised. I mean if these people were convinced they were working on a Saturday, I was ready to be served. I ordered a flat white, an orange juice and traditional bacon and eggs with a side of mushrooms. Price wise, it was a little expensive but what they brought out was worth it. The bacon was crisp and not oily, eggs cooked to my request perfectly and the mushrooms hinted with garlic and seasoning a winner. The Coffee was made exactly how I wanted it and was a great drink to accompany my meal. I left Liste with a little less money than what I'd hoped to spend but the service and experience proved to be my reward.

I was greeted and shown to a table in the corner, seems to be a recurring theme for me due to fronting up as a lone diner. The ambience of the restaurant was relaxed and casual, there was plenty of room inside and a few tables outside with heating. My table was near the counter so I had a very good view of the kitchen and heard all happening behind the scenes. The chef was positive, though does not hold much of a tune (definitely not the next Australian idol) he was pleasant to his kitchen staff too. Wait staff pleasant and friendly and casual in appearance that complimented the relaxed atmosphere. I ordered a New Zealand Pinot Gris and the mains being a Pork belly with fresh kraut green apple and walnut salad and roast garlic and potatoe purée. I was able to pull the pork apart with my fork and then with just the knife so was quite tender. The crackling was generous and crisp and not greasy and oily like some can be. It had a good flavour and did not need any salt and very little pepper as it was quite flavoursome. The potatoe purée was pleasant though a touch more garlic maybe as I could not taste it and just the potatoe which led it to be a touch bland. The salad was fresh though the apple was overbearing and did not compliment the walnut and the onion over powered a touch as well. Over all it was a pleasant dish that worked well with all the elements together. My mains arrived within 25 min from the time I ordered. For dessert I decided on the Malted chocolate brûlée with coconut and lime biscuit accompanied by a wild berry compote. The brûlée had the crack to the custard skin that was sharp and snapped as it a good brûlée should when tapped gently with your spoon. The custard was velvety and had the right measure of what I believed to be Belgian chocolate. whilst the mousse was rich and the cream perfect. The berry compote was fresh as it should but again overpowered by the apple garnish. The side biscuit that was overdone taking away the taste of coconut and lime which was disappointing as I really wanted to taste that. I also ordered a cappuccino and the Coffee creama was perfect and presentation led you to believe it was going to be amazing cup but that was quite deceptive as it measured up to that of McDonald's cuppa but just a tad better and it lacked in strength, I normally take sugar but this was so weak it did not need any so I had it without. Overall I was quite happy with the entire experience and I would visit again with friends. Though I would like to see a decline in the amount of apple used, maybe there was a special on that week.
