A special deal is offered prior to 8am - coffee (large size) and a breakfast burger or wrap for $15.50 which is great value. Try the big breakfast where there is a choice of bacon, salmon or Haloumi. Great to have an alternative offered to the ubiquitous bacon in these times of dietary consciousness. It's a nice feed and those potato cakes are quite the tasty addition! Cosy airconditioned indoor area plus the option of outside seating. Staff are friendly with a proprietor who obviously loves what he does! Ample parking right at the door. Give this establishment a go you won't regret it!

With Campos coffee, perfect poached eggs, and just the right amount of delicious hollandaise on the eggs benny, this is a cafe that we will gladly cross town for again and again. They offer breakfast to 1130 and the cafe was packed when we arrived just before 1100. We grabbed a table outside and it was a cool Brisbane Winter day so we took advantage of the blankets Luckily a table opened up and we could ditch the blankets and enjoy our breakfast inside. It was quite noisy inside and the screaming kid didn't help, but once the large family groups left it was a lovely place to relax with a great coffee and fantastic breakfast.

As previously noted I am a huge fan of pastry and bread. In fact it would be fair to say that…read morebread is my crack, and I'm always fighting the urge to sit down with a fresh loaf, some French butter and gorge myself. I've been hearing good things about this bakery for years, however due to a combination of me being on a bride diet and my reluctance to add further fuel to my bread addiction fire I kept putting off visiting. No longer! I am happily married and as I now live in Alderley instead of New Farm I thought this could be a good substitute for Choquette. Walking in I was greeted with glass cases full of tasty looking treats including some VERY impressive looking quiches (at $20 per large quiche I think I just found my 'too lazy to cook' solution). I bought a slice of carrot cake (tasty, but cream cheese icing was too sweet and lacking in cream cheese tang) however I was there for the bread. Even though it was 10am they only had white sourdough in a Vienna (I'm not sure if they'd sold out or bake through the day) so I bought that and trotted off home for some private time - just me, the loaf and a pat of butter. I've got to say, I don't know if sourdough is the best option for a Vienna. The denseness of the sourdough crumb was lost in the Vienna and the large airholes made it hard to get a decent slice. The flavour was good, but I think it would be better in a dense loaf. Undeterred, I went back and got a proper sourdough loaf that was just lovely, and their light rye sourdough is AWESOME. I haven't tried the pies yet, but I was really happy to also see some arancini in the pie warmer. There is a large gelataria and pizzeria attached to the bakery that I'm going to go back and try, and you can buy their home made pannetone's and gingerbread houses for Christmas treats.

We had only planned on getting drinks and the first question of 'Can you make cold coffees?' Was responded with smooth 'yes, we sure can.' We couldn't get past the pastries, so we dove into the Gluten Free Cheese Cake and the Gluten Free Mud Cake. All I can say was WOW! Now. Back to the coffees- the iced latte was smooth, the iced long black was rich and the hot long black was strong and smooth. We had the option of sitting inside in AC or outside under cover along the footpath. We opted for inside and that's when we noticed the HUGE case of gelato! That was a great surprise even though we had seen the sign. We enjoyed seeing multiple groups come in for drinks and food. We have made plans to return for drinks and gelato!

This cafe, awkwardly positioned in a pocket of Pickering Road, might seem familiar. Their interior…read morehas been done before - mismatched plates and cups, famous people as table numbers, kitsch china figurines and oddly, many lifesize jars of Nutella. But give it a chance. What gives this spot a point of difference, in my opinion, is their choose-your-own-adventure style breakfast menu. They give you the base (eggs and toast - $8.90) and the rest is up to you. Pulled pork (china town style, hoisin meets char siu and dances with soy), vegetable fritter, Haloumi, mushroom, hollandaise? The list is seemingly endless. I arrived to try it all out at 11:30ish on a Friday. It's not overly busy but noisy. You've been warned. The concrete shell of this store means sound proofing isn't an option. Their specialty drink appears to be a cappucino (Genovese beans) with weird and wonderful flavours like nutella or such mixed through. I stick with a flat white that's easy to drink but lacking any oomph. I had read a review previous to going that said ask for a double-shot if you prefer a real coffee kick and I'm inclined to agree. As tempted as I was by the sides menu, I opted for a 6-in Steak & Philly Sub ($10). I've never had a philly steak before but when my plate is served I'm a little lost as what to do with the second slice of baguette. Served as an open sandwich, I'd happily pay a little less for not having the lonesome slice of bread or pay a little extra to have more topping to use on the other slice. I'd actually also love to know if I could have swapped the baguette out for it all served on a bed of spinach. I quite like what's going on at Hansell & Gretel. It's not new but it is a new take on breakfast for this particular area which (and they're directly across the road from iconic Grub Street) I think makes it an interesting game of play for locals! I liked that it wasn't stuffy or pretentious, just familiar food done reasonably well.

Hansell & Gretel is a fairly new spot in Gaythorne, open for breakfasts and lunches every day of…read morethe week. It's small, unpretentious but a bit quirky, and does good food and coffee with friendly service and reasonable prices. The menu selection has some interesting things on there (each has a fairytale-themed name - cute), with a mix of savoury and sweet options, but what is excellent is the long list of extras that means you can tailor your meal to suit. I like being able to add avocado and haloumi to everything! There is also a small, slightly more lunch-focused section of the menu which has things like a burger, philly cheese steak sub, and banh mi. I'm told the philly cheese steak sub is good, it definitely is big! I haven't tried any of the sweet menu options yet, but so far the savoury things I've tried have been yum. They have a decent looking selection of cakes/muffins/etc, many of which are gluten-free or dairy-free (or both). Hansell & Gretel is right next to train (Gaythorne station) and bus (390), but free street parking is also available down nearby side-streets. Seating is both inside and outside, I just wish the outside seats got sunshine in winter! It should be a cooler outdoor spot in summer though to make up for it. Latest update: something has changed, and it's more than the refreshed menu with higher prices (that now exceed the value for money tipping point in my opinion - I know the Woodchopper's Breakfast is huge but it's also $28 and for breakfast I just can't bring myself to pay that). I can't quite put my finger on it but H&G is definitely not as great as it used to be, unfortunately. The coffee is still good, they still play good music, and the sweet treats cabinet still rates highly, but my brunch devotion has waned in favour of other places in the area.

Well, new owners, a fancy refit and some of the tastiest food I've had in a while are just 3 good reasons to give Thai on Ferny Way a go. While there are better Thai restaurants (there are MULTIPLE lists naming them) for a suburban option this is a cracker of a spot. With plenty of off street parking, a really well stocked and reasonably priced bar and a HUGE selection of food to choose from, including some Thai classics if you are looking for a lovely easy night out this is the spot for you. I've tried a few of their dishes now and have to say their soups and salads are amazing and I can't wait to give more of their curries a try as well. I love their curry puffs (so creamy and melt in your mouth) and for those of you that are duck fans, there are a few different duck choices (the duck salad, was crisp, tasty and so moreish). These guys have also embraced delivery (limited area) and take away so those nights that you can't crawl out of your winter warm comfort clothing (ie tracksuit) you can order ONLINE and it's on it's way to your door. I'll definitely be back and would consider this guys a great take away (or even eat in) option.
