I noticed that Little Red Dumpling, one of many small restaurants in the Pinelands Plaza shopping strip, advertised "xiao long bao" on their online menu so we gave it a taste test. The restaurant is small but attractive with unusual lacquered timber slab tables and small backless stools. The stools allow more room for customers but we had to sidle up against the wall to rest our backs. The soup dumplings were delicious. We ate them as an entree. My companion's main course of chicken noodle soup was too bland. My braised beef on rice was quite acceptable but nothing special. Service was efficient and very pleasant. 4 stars for the xiaolongbao but only 3 stars for the mains.

"Yum Yum" The latest…read moreaddition to Oxford Street Bulimba is a little Japanese/Chinese fusion diner Yum Yum Gyoza House (YYGH), brought to you by the same friendly folk who run Sushi Train on the same street. Come to think of it, there seems to have been a Japanese culinary explosion of late in Oxford Street, with Sushi Mura also in Oxford Street, with another one on the way! YYGH, is located next to George's Barbershop in a narrow bit of space, so narrow, you'd think it was a laneway converted into a diner. I imagine it would be what most typically small diners might look like in Tokyo, using the most of small spaces. First night of trading, and already there's lots of interest, as the place was buzzing with people circling around, curiously looking in, perusing the menu, envying some of the diners inside. There's two small tables outside ( for two), and inside there's a sushi bar, (with bar stools which accommodate about 8 people). Sitting inside, you can watch the chefs, cook up a storm. The counter, at the entrance of YYGH is efficiently overseen by a friendly host. She was greeting random passersby, and proactively handing out menus, like a seasoned street marketer on Queen St. The menus are appealing with lots of pictures of the dishes, divided into Appetizers, Side Dishes, Rice Dishes, and Noodle Dishes. Its great, because there's nothing over $14, and the Gyoza's are only $1 each, (5 pcs) for $5. One can choose from Pork, Chicken, Prawn, Teriyaki Chicken, and Vegetable. Another plus, is that they've clearly marked on their menu, which dishes are vegetarian and gluten free. I ended up being greedy, as the food did look utterly Yum Yum, ordering 10 pieces of Gyozas, as well as a Teriyaki Chicken, and Kung Pao Chicken Rice dish. As mine was "takeaway", I did wait a while longer than I expected, and being their first night of trading, It was understandable. I didn't mind as at least I know they were taking the time to prepare & cook my order. The 3 chefs did look a little stressed though. Also, at this point in time, they are operating as "cash only" so be prepared! When I could finally take my order home, and tuck in, it was definitely worth the wait. The Gyozas were soft, light and tasty. So tasty, I was like a vacuum inhaling dust. The rice dishes were quite large portions in the takeaway container bowl, and I struggled to finish it. There was a generous provision of chicken in both the Teriyaki and Kung Pao dishes which was great. Sometimes some places will leave you disappointed as most of your container is just filled with rice. Not YYGH. YYGH is a nice addition to Oxford Street, and can already see the clientele they might attract. You know the type, lazy professionals like myself who can't be bothered to cook mid-week, after a long day at work, but too cheap to eat out properly. For a good meal under $14, you can't go wrong! And those Gyozas will give Happy Little Dumplings a run for their money :) P.S. I had to laugh whilst looking at their menu..it seems someone didn't proof read and spelt "Appetizers" wrong; it reads "Appterziers" ..maybe its German for Yum?
