So when the ever so classy Hanaichi Sushi Bar opened up in the Wintergarden, I had very high hopes. The owners are very Japanese, very clean, very organised and very into their Japanese Cuisine. It shows. Down to the fine detail of the menu, the drink bar and the fancy set up of the train. The food is fresh, the seafood fresher and the waitresses and waiters are very attentive. The chairs on the sushi bar itself are a little narrow to my liking though, on a busy night, you are quite literally shoulder to shoulder to the person next to you. A bit non-romantic. The food, I like the classy little salad rolls they have on the train... they are fresh, sweet and very healthy. The sashimi is carved like it should be. Not too thin, not too thick, but just enough to melt in your mouth. My only complaint is that the chicken karaage has a slight curry hint to it's marinade.. not a big fan of the curry flavoured chicken. Other than that, you have a pretty positive experience at this place, it's a great place to bring a date too... they have tables for that, so avoid sitting on the sushi bar side of things if you do.

Once you sit down, a waiter immediately asks for your drink order and any special food requests you may have. The sushi train is fairly extensive with a good selection of raw and cooked choices. My favorite is a partially seared tuna nigri with some sweet ponzu sauce layered over. The prices are decent and you should be able to get very full for less than 25 bucks. Be sure to ask for fresh ginger and wasabi!

It's my favourite sushi haunt and it definitely helps that it's on the same street as my work building. With unique plates filled with buttery fish and a wide variety of cooked options including karaage, gyoza and dumplings there's something to please everyone. Service has been exceptional each time I eat here with water glasses being refilled regularly and helpful staff at every turn. It can be slightly more expensive than your bog-standard suburban train, but I'm willing to pay for the atmosphere and comfortable surrounds.

They have simplified their 'plate pricing' by only have 2 types of plates on the menu - all plates with coloured rings around the edges are $4.50, the patterned plates / premium items are $8.00. Wide selection of fresh made sushi rolls, nigri, entree items (gyoza, prawn parcels, chicken karaage bites etc), premium items, desserts and miso soup on the sushi train, but you can also order from the menu. Tried a mini tempura prawn udon bowl soup for $8.00 and it was awesome. Brown rice and black rice sushi rolls on the train and lots of vegetarian options. They have a little takeaway window at the front of the restaurant with sushi rolls for a quick takeaway lunch. The chefs work fast, and all items on the sushi train are fresh, fresh, fresh. Takeaway can be made to order. Great spot for lunch, nice ambiance and friendly staff. Just make sure you get in early to beat the lunch crowds! Takeaway and catering also available.

After a tip of from a friend in the area, however, I decided to roll the dice - or should i say, rice! I was greeted by an older lady with friendly face the moment I walked in the door. And after trying manfully but ultimately unsuccessfully to get the damn thing fully closed I took in my surroundings. I absorbed the brown colour scheme, three smallish tables and... I had taken in my surroundings. This was clearly one of those places were all the action was saved for the kitchen, or so i hoped. I looked up to see a menu board that boasted well over fifty items, including typical Japanese favourites (teriyaki noodles, Japanese curry) to more out of the box fare (octopus balls, eel). I went with a dish that was accompanied by a yummy looking photo and while I'm not entirely sure what the ingredients were it sure was tasty. As I ate I noticed the staff preparing fresh sushi rolls behind the counter and opted to try the spicy beef. Perhaps not a traditional choice but one I can heartily recommend. A sentiment that goes for Oishi Sushi also.

My most recent visit was for my birthday last month. Its hard celebrating being away from family and friends but the staff truly made me feel special. They went above and beyond to always check up on me and make sure I was enjoying the entire evening. I even chatted with one of the waitresses for awhile during one of the slow periods which made for a very lovely dinner. I decided to get the Také No Hana for my birthday. There were so many courses that I barely finished all my food. My favorites definitely were the nori crisps, hiramasa kingfish, and miso caramelized 'glacier 51' toothfish. All of the flavors, seasonings, sauces and ingredients were so perfectly put together. Fantastic experience and amazing service during the visit. Also a tip - if you're driving up from Gold Coast you can park near Kangaroo Point and take the free boat over to Eagle St Pier to avoid the pricey parking.

Secondly, the idea of uncut rolls that aren't handrolls was new to me - especially as fast food. Take-out uncut sushi rolls aren't something you find in Taiwan, Japan, or even the U.S., so I was rather amused at first. After trying several places around the city, including LR Sushi and ones in Myer center, my favorite is somehow still Sushiro on Adelaide Street. I know that LR Sushi is way more popular for some reason, but I really didn't like what they do with their sauces, and the ingredients actually didn't taste as fresh as Sushiro's, which is pretty much across the street. I got the fresh salmon roll, and the salmon was indeed fresh! I also got the dragon roll, which was also good. They don't skimp on their ingredients, like some of the other sushi take-out stands, so if you're looking for a quick sushi fix in the city, I recommend Sushiro!

I was also delighted by the interesting range of flavours they had.
