    I was completely in awe on my first visit here on 6th June…read more I am completely new to Buddhism and was so happy to be so welcomed, so accepted, and so happy to be around people that I can relate to and learn from. I arrived at 12:30 when free meditation was open and had a look around the reception area. I was very happy to be offered a cup of tea and be so pleasantly chatted to. The lady kindly took me on a tour of the building, showing me the beautiful two large shrine rooms and the small personal shrine room. She not only told me a bit of the history of the charity and the founder, but also showed me how to meditate, and did some guided meditation for me. I'll have to save up to get the train back to Brighton just to visit here again. I'm so glad these people exist.

The organisation aims to make spiritual practise accessible to all sorts of people with all levels of knowledge and experience. The centre is staffed by friendly volunteers who will welcome anyone who wishes to drop in for a chat about what's on offer. Amongst the many classes and courses available, they run led drop in meditation for those who aren't yet ready to commit to a full course. Similarly you can drop in to an impressive range of yoga classes- choose from: Hatha, Iyengar, Astanga and Vajrasati. There are lunchtime and evening classes to suit all schedules. The building itself has a calm, peaceful atmosphere (as one might expect!). A small shrine room is available for individual meditation and a beautiful large room with a glass roof is used for group meditation practise. The centre is a really great resource, not only for supporting Brighton's Buddhist community but for educating people as to what Buddhism is really all about! That said, you don't need to be interested in spiritual study to attend the meditation or yoga classes...they're open to all.

    That's it, I'm addicted to Bikram Yoga!!…read more I've always wanted to like yoga but have quite often struggled with it in the past. When I dedicate time to exercise, I want to work up a sweat and feel like I'm really getting the benefit. And as lovely as it is to lie on the floor, feeling the connection with certain parts of my body, I just don't feel like I'm getting value for my time and money. Bikram, however, is different. This is a 90 minute yoga class completed in a room heated to 45 degrees that works muscles in your body that you never knew existed. Boy, did I ache after my first couple of classes! The session involves 2 breathing exercises and 26 postures, all of which are repeated twice. You move between the postures quite quickly, and with the addition of the heat you get a really good cardiovascular workout, at the same time as improving your core strength and flexibility. The class is designed to balance and strengthen every system in the body, to promote weight loss, prevent injury and illness, and limit the effects of aging. At the risk of sounding very new-worldy, it's also supposed to promote mental clarity and reduce stress by developing concentration, self control, patience and determination. All of the teachers at BITL are fantastic. They are very knowledgeable and encouraging. They learn everyone's name quickly and will help you reach the correct postures during the class to make sure you are getting the maximum benefit without the risk of injury. They are also always available before and after the class for a chat and advise if needed. The room here is spacious and the front wall is lined with mirrors which really helps you to connect and focus during the class. The room can be a little smelly and it's best not to think of the volume of sweat that is soaked into the carpet! There are shower rooms and communal showers for use afterwards although these can get busy. Maximum class size is about 30 and there is a good mix of ladies and gents. Classes are quite expensive, about £13 for a drop in session, but you can also bulk buy classes or get an unlimited monthly package. They also have great discounts on introduction packages. There are usually four classes spread throughout the day so it's easy to fit into most schedules. There are mats and towels to rent, and drinks, snacks, books and kit available to buy. Bikram is a yoga revelation for me. It feels like you are getting a complete detox as well as a good workout. It's even encouraged me to eat healthier and reduce my alcohol intake - this probably won't last, but might as well make the most of it while I'm motivated! The only negative for me is the location. The studio is right in the centre of town so getting there can be a nightmare, especially at weekends, and parking is an extra cost on the already pricey classes.

I'll give anything a go, but I usually lose…read moreinterest in anything exercise-related after about 3 attempts, however, I feel like Bikram in the Lanes deserves some more credit so I'm going to give it to them. It's a great place for all you yoga experts and novices. So, lets just clarify - Bikram yoga consists of 90 mins of intense yoga (26 different positions) in a hot and humid room. The heat and humidity mean that the positions are less intense on your muscles (it's surprising how un-achy you feel the next day) and also detox your body. Because of the heat - you will sweat like you've never sweated before - you do need to wear as little as possible - bikinis are ideal, though I opted for teeny weenie shorts and a sports bra. Also, water is a must, a big old bottle of it. The classes are run by a selection of teachers, all very well trained and from various parts of the world. They really know what they're doing, and keep a close eye on the Bikram 'freshers', encouraging them to take a minute out if it's all getting too much. Unlike some yoga schools I've been to, the room is modern and recently decorated, and doesn't smell of feet. That's always a plus. They also have yoga mats and towels to rent, and clean changing rooms and showers (much needed). Bikram is expensive, more so than other types of yoga, however it is a very long work out. Bikram in the Lanes offer an unlimited deal for beginners too, so you can see if you like it before signing up for anything long term. Bikram is really worth going to just for the experience, and Bikram in the Lanes is a great place to get started.

I saw that The Light…read moreCentre - Belgravia was a short 4 minute walk from my hotel, so I booked the 7:15am vinyasa class on Thursday with Valentina. When I entered The Light Centre, I saw that it was more than just a yoga studio. It was a holistic space where you can find different types of therapies and healing modalities offered including acupuncture and lymphatic drainage, massage therapy, physical therapy, ear wax removal, etc. I happened to be the only student in the class during that time since the other student cancelled last minute. This was totally fine by me, and it ended up working out perfectly. I had the opportunity to work with Valentina on customizing the class based on my body's needs for that morning. My mind wanted to stick to the vinyasa as scheduled (I'm a vinyasa teacher too, so naturally I gravitated toward that), but my body desperately needed deep stretching and more of a restorative style especially from the tightness from walking everywhere and traveling. She led a brilliant warm up and mini-flow, then she ended the class with juicy yin. It was honestly one of the best yin classes I've ever taken, and I appreciated her knowledge of Chinese meridians. Not all yin teachers I've taken go that extra step to describe the benefits of the poses for different organs. Valentina is an amazing teacher, and I would highly recommend you drop-in her classes at The Light Centre!

    I'm an astanga girl, through and through…read more I sometimes think to myself, "Larissa, you should go to a not-astanga class for a change of pace. You know, keep yourself challenged; develop your yogic knowledge". Sometimes I go through with this train of thought and end up in a miscellaneous yoga class with an instructor who chatters incessantly and has me doing squats for a full hour and no other recognisable form of asana so as to have me cursing myself under my breath for 60 minutes. I mean, if I wanted to go to a legs, bums and tums class, I would have gone to the gym. Right? So, this happened to me tonight at the Light Centre. But DESPITE this, I'm giving the place five stars. That's right. The space was magnificent for the central London location. Abundant changing rooms, a spacious sitting room with all manner of comfortable couches, futons and chairs, magazines and books, tea and filtered water. The guy on the reception whom I have encountered twice now has been completely friendly and welcoming on both occasions. Also, there are showers, apparently (though I have not seen them). Sure, the two studios aren't much to look at, but they're functional. I don't need my yoga studio to be grand, as it's just me and my mat when it comes right down to it. Two other things to note: Stewert does many Jivamukti classes here throughout the week. I know him from a stint of taking one of his classes at another yoga studio before I moved out of its area, and he is a fabulous yoga instructor. The best conventional instructor (i.e., leading a class, giving verbal instructions, encouragement, the occasional postural correction) I've encountered in London. What excites me most about this studios is that is does a morning "assisted practice" (read: mysore-style yoga), the monthly cost of which is as low as £48! I used to pay £100 for mysore yoga, and that was with a SUBSTANTIAL student discount. Speaking of prices, otherwise, they're really cheap here. Starting from £9 for an hour, £10 for one-and-a-half, etc, the cost is lower than other studios I've researched in less accessible/commutable areas. Plus, you can get a discount for purchasing £50 or £100 pre-pay increments. As for me, I'm going back to take the Light Centre up on its £10 for 10 days of morning "assisted practices". Expect a report back. PS, it's not just yoga here. There are pilates classes and holistic therapies (eg, massages, detoxifications, etc.).
