Great venue, good food (albeit not mind-boggling), friendly and good service. Good value for money.

Really enjoy this place by the river. Good atmosphere and love the food. Will come againread more

Gazette is one of my local restaurants and I was surprised that no-one on Yelp has reviewed it yet!…read moreIt's a gem of a place, hidden away off the (rather nasty and quite smelly) York Road on the Battersea / Wandsworth border. Nestled between riverside apartments the restaurant offers traditional French cuisine in a relaxed and informal setting. It markets itself as a cafe, bar, brassiere and private room. To be fair, it's a restaurant on the top floor and a nice bar on the lower level (perfect for reading the paper and relaxing). The private room isn't exactly massive, and has a glass partition, so it's not exactly 'private' per se, just slightly removed from the other diners. My partner had his 40th b.day here and it was a great success. The menu was tailor made, with all his favourite things: truffles, foie gras, confit of duck etc. I ate here a couple of weeks ago with my mum, her friend and my other half. Service was good, if a little slow at times. The place is very very French so don't expect to be hurried with your meal - this is about relaxing and taking your time. Similarly, the service, timing and pacing of your meal will reflect this. The wine list is MASSIVE, and I do mean massive. However, if the owner is about (Walter) he will be more than happy to guide you to a suitable choice. Prices aren't cheap, but the selection is superb. The menu changes daily and has been designed to appear like a newspaper front page. I had snails to start, and then salmon with sweet potato for main. The snails were delicious, swimming in melted butter (I daren't even begin to think about how many calories were in it) , they also had a deliciously earthy taste. Yum. The salmon was cooked well, and the sweet potato was fine, if well, a little watery. My fellow diners had similarly hit and misses with their choices, a mustard and tomato tart was disappointing, a veal main course was served luke warm and had to be sent back (not a problem, and it was dealt with quickly and didn't impact on our enjoyment one bit), foie gras starter for my other half was delicious with red onion jam. Just another note about the way the food is served. Everything is quite 'rustic' so don't be surprised if your food comes served in a large pot / pan / dish. It's a cute gimmick, but not essential. Although must be a nightmare for the poor waiting staff. Speaking of the waiting staff 100% of them are French and have varying levels of English. So do try and be patient or ask another server. I find it adds to the whole French experience! Anyhoo, Gazette is well worth a look if you're in the area. it's also a great place to go with friends for a group birthday / event as long as you're not wanting to hit the local nightclubs after (they're aren't any). The place can get a little rowdy with the right crowd there and also for big sporting events (especially involving the French) you'll find a large ex-pat community.

As of this review the establishment has been open for a little over four weeks. The service reflects this, the staff are charming, helpful and quite knowledgeable but they come across as a little nervous and slightly unsure of themselves at times. I can only imagine they will continue to improve from what is a solid start. The opening cocktails at the bar were decent, but not spectacular. The starter of scallops was a little too salty for my preferences, but otherwise great. Likewise the wild boar ravioli with chocolate flakes was innovative and worked very well. It's often said, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, that a place can be judged on its cheeseboard and toilets. Here they score very well. The cheeseboard had some classics such as mature Comté and a few more obscure offerings that catered for a wide variety of tastes. The cheeseboard looks sure to adapt to local preferences and the waiter eluded to the appearance of mature Gouda which is always a hit. If there was one easy win for them I would suggest really toning down the music. The songs catered for people of a certain age. Being of that age they were nostalgic and enjoyable - but often too loud. Let the food and the people do the talking - not Meredith Brooks. In short this place has a lot of potential, the location has always been great and offers good views over the river, the food is very good, as is the service. If you are comparing this to other nearby options such as the more expansive Marco Polo go to View 94, it's better in every respect. It's currently a little expensive for what they are, but the pricing is probably about right for where they will be.

Step inside, and you could be forgiven for wondering what just happened. One minute you're wandering down a quiet back-road in Battersea, overlooked by council houses and the odd school. The next, you're in a low-lit room, a bar ahead of you lined with upside-down wine glasses, candles and fairy lights, wooden chairs and tables to your left and right and small, elegant plants against the walls, in between scores of 1930s vintage pictures. If you've arrived after 8pm, the live music will be playing. Usually gypsy jazz, but often other types of recognisably 1930s jazz too: A piano, some vocals, a woodwind instrument.. It's easy to imagine yourself as an extra in the English Patient or whatever your favourite film set in the 1930s is. The service is friendly and quick. The food is a mixture of French, central European and north African, and pretty good too. The wine, beer and spirits list is basic but good enough to accompany the food or quaff slowly whilst enjoying the music. QueCumbar's website quotes local press as saying this place would be perfect for a first date. I'd go further than that. If your girl/guy has a just a hint of a musical soul or a smidgen of interest in the 1930s/40s, I'd say that taking them to QueCumbar will firmly tilt things in your favour! If they're big fans of the era or jazz... best get planning that second date! It's cheap too. Arrive before 8pm and the music is free. After 8pm and it's just £5. Food is in the £10-£15 range and drink is the usual. Overall? Well worth checking out, whether you're into jazz, 1930s vintage, or want to go somewhere original and unique.
