I am not local (American) but I have lived in London as a young poor 20 something. Primark was a Godsend for me. It's also really interesting now that they have expanded into the states (although not where I live) to come back and see how it has changed. When I lived here and had no money this was my go to for anything trendy, or needed. When I moved back to America quite unexpectedly I went there to stock up on inexpensive suitcases to pack up my life and carry back across the world. Any fast fashion or trendy items, this was my go to. Needed something for my home that didn't need to be high quality, Primark. I got a job at AllSaints a few blocks away and we were supposed to wear their clothes exclusively, but we only got a 60% discount (that's a big discount but still not inexpensive for a college kid) so I got a lot of my work shoes here and they never noticed. Now that I visit as a tourist, it's my go to for things like I need an umbrella that I can leave behind when I go home, or it's raining and I didn't bring my raincoat with me today...or it's colder than what I planned for on this trip so let me stop by and grab a few pieces of layering clothes or a coat. The Disney selection makes me wonder why there isn't a Primark in Orlando (because they get very unique Disney licensed items). If you don't have a big budget or are in need of souvenirs, I also recommend Primark. But if you're looking for a luxury experience, this isn't for you. If you're anti fast fashion, please just skip this. It's busy and loud and sort of a cattle call at the till, but it's great novelty spot. The layout has shed over the years bit it's still a great spot for cheep gifts, replacing broken or lost items and getting an unexpected suitcase for any souvenirs if you are a tourist (my favorite suitcase going on 11 years was £25 from here & yes we got another this most recent trip) 3 stars because I've definitely had some weird experience here over the years but generally if you go in knowing what it is and what to expect, it won't disappoint you.

If there's one thing about about an H&M that you can count on, it's consistency. I found just such a deal at this very store. I was on a mission to stuff my America-destined suitcase with coats galore on my recent trip to London and while we have H&M's here in the States, it's always been my experience that they are a bit better overseas, so I figured I'd go in. As I strolled through the aisles, combed the racks and fondled, tugged and pulled at fabrics, I found an adorable little gold knitted sweater for... 3 pounds. Yes! But a jacket, Stephy, you must find a jacket. Keep your focus, girl! I decided since the first floor was looking pretty picked over and grim that I'd hike the two flights upstairs and see what there was. And there, oh there it was, my new coat. I only saw two of them. One, definitely smaller than the other and from about 20 feet away, I guessed maybe a size 4 and a 12 or 14 for the bigger one aka my new coat. I b-lined it for the coat, only knocking a few tiny hipsters out of the way and clenched it with my mitten covered hands! (Somehow that doesn't sound very menacing with the word mitten in it, huh? Oh well, moving on...) Sure enough, the small was indeed a size 4, off with you silly little person coat! And then there it was my 14 (hey, I eat, I have curves, la la la). I immediately dropped my purse and shed the 17 layers of clothing I was wearing to prevent me from freezing to death in the chilly London air and the coat was on. I did the chick side turn that gives you a peep at your bum to make sure it looks flattering. I did the classic reverse glance neck tilt to make sure my ass didn't look as big as it really is and then I went to button it and... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Missing buttons!! Crap sandwich! But wait? There was that little person coat that I tossed aside with reckless abandon.... Hmm, perhaps that coat had buttons? Sure enough! IT HAD BUTTONS!! And so it was time to plan my discount. My trained shopper mind knew full well that they weren't going to be able to sell this coat as is, which means, discountville!! Hey, it's defective and missing most of the front buttons, surely you can't charge me full price. What say we take the buttons off of the smaller coat and give them to me and then sell me the big coat at a discount defect price seeing as how I will have to sew the buttons on myself? And so I scanned the cashiers and looked for the youngest, most clueless looking one. There she was, blinking like Bambi! I approached her with confidence and gave her my spiel and after she thought it over and asked her manager, what do you know, success, new jacket and 20 new buttons were mine! Thanks H&M, I will wear my score with pride!

They have some terrible clothes, I know, you'll pick up a lovely top then realise it has a hideous patch of glitter on it, or pick up a gorge cardi then realise the buttons are already falling off, but sometimes you'll dig out some amazing finds! It's also a great place for 'the basics' like tshirts and vests in every colour. It's one of my first stops for a summer holiday too - lots of handy cheap beach coverups etc. It's not great quality and they're not long lasting garments but then you're not paying much and I've bought loads of really cool little dresses and tops from here. And lots and lots of hats!! I love hats!

Factory Outlet North Finchley is nothing like that. There are some good deals to be had, even a rack starting at just 5 pounds. I'll admit the clothes in this shop are taste-full and beautiful. There is a particularly nice brown ruffle dress in a silky material for 22 pounds and some lovely knits that wrap around your body. The staff here is friendly enough and not up your arse, in a way that is common in a small store. I like to come in here and have a poke around. I will note this store only sells clothing so no handbags or shoes on offer.

Prior to your visit I'd keep your expectations low on the quality as most everything is plastic and inexpensive fast fashion items, but for a quick stop while you're in town, it's not too bad and they have fitting rooms so you can try things on. We did not love the UK law where although Primark opens at 11:30am on Sundays, you can't purchase anything until 12pm, so if you visit on a Sunday from out of town, it's just something to be aware of. All in all, the honey liked his £7 swimsuit and we were able to use self-checkout, so overall we'd definitely come back.
