To keep this review short, Lula Cellars is one of the best wineries we stopped at along the way to Mendocino! The employees are SO SO nice and we learned so much history about their vineyards, Mendocino, and about the different wine tastings overall. There is also a dog that greets people as they come in and is so loving and cute! Wine tastings are only $10/person with a Lula cork as a gift. Definitely check this place out. read more

My friends and I were at nearby Camp Navarro for a wedding and thought we would just pop in to Lula for 30 minutes or so to try some wines. Two hours later, we left after trying numerous wines and purchasing a few bottles. Kim poured our wines and was a great conversationalist - he was the reason we stuck around as long as we did! I don't often write Yelp reviews (and haven't in over a year) but our fantastic afternoon here prompted me to want to tell everyone how great this place is and how exceptional the customer service is. This winery is moving again before July of this year. They are planning on a new facility next to their vines, just up the road, north. What can one say about a winery that has only one wine for tasting? Success! It will be about a month before the next bottling is available for tasting. Meanwhile, Dan Reed - Keeper of the Wine is doing his best to entertain and educate potential customers at the current tasting room. He poured 1/2 a bottle of Pinot Noir for us while we talked about the winery. They are open on the later end, until 6 pm, so this was the last winery of our day. Dan poured for us. Dan is a self proclaimed pushy salesperson, although all I found him to be pushing was pours of delicious wine and corny jokes. He is quite a comedian, although I think our ability to hold our own threw him (and his scripted jokes) off a bit. We made new friends, including the pup, and left with bottles of wine. I'd return during a future visit. read more

This was our first tasting for our day in Anderson Valley. We mostly came here because I liked the variety of their wines and the prices, but also because they are super dog friendly. My husband and I enjoy traveling with our yellow lab, so I was so happy that they have a resident yellow lab in their tasting room. Our boy was able to hang out with us in the tasting room and was provided with water. This tasting room has no frills. It's an old tractor shed turned into a tasting room. What they've done inside is nice but not fancy. We went in around 11 am on a Saturday morning in November. It was a party of four and the woman that took care of our tasting was so friendly to talk to. I'm not usually a big fan of when the person pouring tries to join our conversations but I was happy to talk to her here! We loved our experience so much that we joined the wine club and we're looking forward to our first delivery coming up. We think we'll even go back to pick it up just to share this place with more friends/family. read more

David and I have never gone wine tasting and I am glad that Lula Cellars was our first experience! We pull up and walked up to the door and Honey the dog came up and greeted us hello! Instantly, Kaycee (not sure if I spelled that correctly) met us at the door with a glass of wine each! It was the best welcome ever! For $5.00 you can try each wine but the fee is waved if you buy something! We bought 2 bottles. Lula's has a Pinot Noir double gold wine which is the Mendocino Pinot Noir and it is fantastic! David and I have never been wine people but I think we are now! This place is small and very intimate. If you are looking for a winery to stop at off the 128 and you are searching through Yelp like I did .. Take my advice and come here! You won't regret it! read more

It was ~4:30pm on Saturday. "We're near that winery that was open till 6pm, right? Let's go taste two reds and get a bottle of the one we like most for dinner." ... An hour and a half later, we'd thoroughly fallen in love with Lula's wine (and Lula's dogs). Dan - our pourer, joke-teller, and soon, friend - was the companion we never knew we needed that day. Lula was by far our favorite winery (of four) in Mendocino. We've visited 30-some wineries in Napa, as well, and Lula stands toe-to-toe with that set, too. This place is the first stop on the redwood forest scenic route 128 coming from Mendocino. I had my dog which was a plus. This place was more than dog friendly, seems they encourage them coming. There were 6 in the tasting room alone. Small and quaint tasting room. Dan, the owner?, was very knowledgable, witty and welcoming. Definitely worth a stop. Great Pinot Noirs too. Probably one of the best wineries I've been to. I'm from an area that specializes in zinfandel due to weather, but this place's zin was great and we ended up buying 2 bottles. Dan was great. Mom and I had spent a few hours in the car and were headed home. We had seen lots of awesome things and when a winery sign popped up, I decided to turn in. I hadn't been into a winery in quite some time. Figured I'd take Mom to just one more cool spot on the way home. We pulled into the place and parked. The place was hidden out in the woods. Random winery in a great big forest. What could go wrong? We walked in and were warmly greeted by the people inside. We bellied up to the bar and started chatting with the folks besides us and across from us pouring. After chatting about life and where we were from, Mom and I discovered that the bartender/pourer lady Kacy graduated from the same college that we had. Crazy! I swear, this world gets ever smaller each day I walk upon it. Kacy began asking us how we heard about the place. She told us about all the effort and hard work she had done by putting time and money into advertising the vineyard on various social media sites. I felt kinda bad telling her that we hadn't seen any of her hard work and simply just turned in when we saw the sign on the side of the road. As we were chatting, Mom and I both just sorta started tasting the wine. Kacy poured, and Mom and I drank. We liked the first thing. Then we tried the second thing and we liked that too. The third thing we liked also. The fourth thing....yup, liked that one. We soon discovered that each thing we tried was actually really good. Mostly at wineries there's one you really like, and a some that are just "Meh" and then there are the ones you dislike. This place doesn't have any bad wines. This place doesn't have any "Meh." wines. Each one we tried was genuinely great and excellent. After a while we were chatting with everybody in the place. We were petting the dogs that lounged about. The place is just really friendly. Then add wine. They were giving us sets of buttons and pins and cards with recipes to cook along with their wines. "That's pretty easy, would you cook that?" "No, this wine will go with a Carl's Jr. Burger, not that one. Del Taco? Probably that one." It was pretty crazy. but awesome. After a bit longer, we looked at the clock and decided that we really needed to move on. There were still a lot of miles to go before we got back to Santa Clarita. We had a difficult time picking out the one favorite of the bunch, and then we left the place to continue to roadtrip home. This place is great. Kacy is amicable, friendly and just a pleasure to sit and chat with. The winery is beautiful,rows of grapes nestled within the thick dark massive forest. If you're a true wine aficionado, somebody who likes drinking wine, or just some shmuck who decided to turn in to check it out; you'll love this place. I promise. read more

This is a cute, super dog-friendly winery. The owner tells campy, corny jokes to get you laughing and is just the sweetest man. The wine is very drinkable. We just enjoyed a bottle of the rosé this weekend and it definitely helped quench our thirst in the heat. read more

My boyfriend and I did a last minute wine tasting here and it was a dream. They didn't mind that we didn't have a reservation and happily welcomed us (may be different on a busier day). Kim and Dan were so much fun to talk to. They told us the story of the vineyard dog that they had adopted, Kepler, a very good boy. So personable. My husband and I stopped in here on the way home from a weekend in Mendocino. We are so happy that we did. We are already planning our next visit. The wines are excellent (we took home a bottle of the Costa Pinot, but we could have easily walked out with a case). But what really makes this place special are the owners- Dan and Kim. They were hilarious and cute and we loved talking with them. A lot of places make great wines, but the friendly, welcoming atmosphere that Dan and Kim have created makes this place memorable. Lula is definitely one to visit in Anderson Valley. With approximately 3000 cases made a year, Lula prides itself on the small scale operation they have here. Let me say, what a find. With the cute golden retriever who is there (as seen in the Yelp photos) is beyond adorable. The tasting is $5 that is waived if you buy a bottle of wine, which you definitely will want to. The place has no frills, just the counter that has I presume two individuals behind the counter who walk you through the tasting process. WINE: My favorites were the Sauv Blac, Zin, and the Pinot Noirs. The full bodied aspect of the wines and how easy they are to drink makes me always wonder why I don't drink more wine ... Throughout the tasting experience, we were offered cheese and chocolate to accompany the wine (amazing let me tell ya) and when the tasting was over, we were offered more wine to remind ourselves how much we loved the earlier Zin and Sauv Blac. The pours are generous and you know the wine sells itself without much effort. This hidden gem makes me want to not post this Yelp review because of my love for these types of finds in California, but alas, this place deserves six stars on Yelp. Without a doubt, this place makes delicious wine on a small production, treats everybody who comes in with a great attitude (as long as you bring in a good attitude too!), and makes you laugh the day away in Anderson Valley. read more

I stopped here with my girlfriend while driving down the coast. It was a lovely experience, we tried five wines and were given so much information on the region by our host. He was able to recommend other wineries and gave fantastic suggestions of food pairings (including vegetarian friendly). I'm not typically a rosé drinker but ended up purchasing a bottle since it was so delightful. One of the joys of wine tasting is finding those gems that no matter who you pour a glass for (red wine drinkers, white wine drinkers, proclaimed beer only drinkers) it seems to be universally accepted. I was lucky to discover Lula through my Uncle and my Father during their never ending search for Pinots. The 2009 Lula Pinot Noir if you get a chance to taste is phemomenal, and the subsequent years I also consider amazing pinots. Fruit foward and full bodied their pinots can be paired with dinner or drank by themselves. This is not like some of the floral note pinots people may find more common as you move towards Hopland and Sonoma so if that is your cup of tea this may be overwhelming. This is not to say that their other wines are without merit but their pinots are certainly one of the reasons I can't stay away. They are a smaller winery so their batches are not large in number and you need to visit their tasting room to grab your bottle when they are available (oh sure they ship but where is the fun in that?) The other reason I can't stay away is the gentlemen behind the wine are precious. Dan and Jeff are two of the friendliest, inviting, and charming men. Their passion for their wine pretty much oozes out of them and an afternoon spent on the porch of their tasting room in Philo with them is an afternoon well spent. I am so excited for their move to their new quarters. As others have said they are finally going to move onto their property with a tasting room over looking thier pond :) I can't wait!! If you go up to Booneville or are trvaveling to Mendocino/Fort Bragg this is a must stop! read more

Made our second trip to the Lula tasting room in greater "downtown" Philo recently. They are still working on getting the permits to open their winery further west along CA 128 but their intimate, well-done tasting room in Philo is a fun stop. Dan the man behind the tasting bar is great - come prepared to share the blarney with him and the good wine. Their rose of Pinot is a winner, the Zin good, and the three Pinots available were all good, especially the Costa Vineyard, our fav. Make sure to give a little love to "chateauneuf du pup", the tasting room four-legged helper. read more

My boyfriend and I were taking the long way home back to the Bay Area from Fort Bragg and decided to stop by for a tasting. We were impressed. It's small and intimate, but are growing as they are pretty new. Although the venue was small they were very busy, but the staff was very attentive and customer service was great. Their tasing list had 6 wines (usually you only get 4-5) and ended up being on the house (not sure if it's common for tastings to be free in this area, but it made my day ha!). We happened to bring some cheese and crackers from our trip, which we enjoyed outside on one of their picnic benches. Was a great way to end our trip. read more

Excellent winery in Anderson Valley. They seem to specialize in local Pinot's. They had a broad range and all were outstanding. The vibe is low key but high quality and unpretentious. They are extremely dog friendly. Dan was hilarious and welcoming, asking us to bring our dog in and then asking us to let her off leash which was a blast. I stocked up. The setting is beautiful with several shades areas to sit outside. I will stop in every time I am headed to the coast towards Mendocino. read more

Great experience at Lula today! It was so easy to make a reservation. We were returning back to the Bay Area from Mendocino and Ken was incredibly accommodating when we had to move our reservation an hour earlier. Kim served us the wine which were all delicious and explained the history of AV and winery during the visit. Tasting fees were very reasonable and they're offering 20% of select pinots the rest of this month. We topped off our visit with a walk around their beautiful vineyards. Wonderful place to visit at the north end of Anderson Valley. This new tasting room has just been open since October1. We visited 10/18. Dan Reed is one of a kind in the tasting room. Knowledgeable and quite the comedian! Also had the good fortune to finally meet the "Grand Fromage", winemaker Jeff Hansen. Great pinots and the zin is quite tasty as well.
