A little local place that I ordered takeout. Pretty good, I'll be back. For the price, you can't beat it. I got the parm sandwich in panini style and it was delicious. I did wish it had more sauce on it, but otherwise really good. The cutlets were thin and crispy and the side of fries had a great portion. They did not skimp on the cheese or cutlets. I came here on a Saturday night while visiting my family. Party of 4. We were the only people there for a while. They did not have bottled water of any kind so I ordered a ginger ale, which was clearly running low on syrup. I had a Caesar salad which was not bad. Calamari was ok. Mozzarella en carrozza was two slices of toast with a small amount of mozzarella in between them. I would have called it 'Grilled Cheese' but there wasn't enough cheese for that to be fair to other grilled cheeses. The Chicken Francese had the consistency of something that went through a washing machine and wasn't meant to (as Chicken Francese naturally is). Way too heavy on the lemon. Spaghetti was undercooked by several minutes. A person in my party had tortellini which was also severely undercooked. Another ordered a $26 (seemingly unbeatable for Bergen County) Filet Mignon, which was visibly raw throughout most of it and was cold in the middle. He said it seemed like it was cooked in a microwave. And they couldn't even get that right. I guess you get what you pay for. The walls and ceiling near the skylights had visible mold on them. I like to support local businesses and will always go to a family-owned place before even considering Olive Garden... Except if the only alternative is this place. I'm hoping they ran this business with more dedication and integrity in the past, as I'm sure they did when they opened in 1948, and for probably the majority of the time between then and now. I hope this place can get its act together. Anyone seeking employment with culinary skills should know there's a 'Help Wanted' sign on the front window. Please save this place. Went there for a B~Day, party of eight. Place is a nice size, not gigantic, not cramped. There were maybe five other parties (not including the bar) during our 3 hour stay. It's a local place with local customers, hugs were shared with waiters. The service is slow but to American standards. The staff seems true Italian (including of heritage), and there, they drink, laugh and eat to take in all they can enjoy. You're not only being served food but also getting an experience. They give you bread, they let you digest, they serve salad and then the same, etc. Not knocking what people say, it's simply a matter of time and preference. The waiters begin or end their sentences with "Hunny" or "Sweetheart" to the ladies and welcome an invitation to their opinion, handing price-wise considerations when felt necessary. The bread was fantastic, dusted at the top with something like cinnamon added with something. Crust won't cut up the roof of your mouth, nice and soft on the inside. They supply the typical wrapped butter (opting out a homeade option here, no biggie of course - just a tidbit), but the olive oil dip is much more preferred. I had the Stuffed Rigatoni Bolognese, delicious. I like when I put salt on something (I'm a salt girl) and it ruins the taste. That's when you know it's natural and nothing else is needed. Prices are medium and I believe you're getting more than what you pay for. The next day, to our suprise, it tasted just as good to all of my friends. I would go there again when I'm not superhungry. And I'd appreciate the friend's I didn't know I had, the appetite for fresh, piping hot homemade food, and a place I could recommend to my friends for a night of laid back company. read more

I must say I was really contemplating on whether or not to try Luigi's because of the horrible reviews. So happy that I decided to give it a shot. It's an old fashioned restaurant with wonderful service and delicious food. The chicken marsala was delicious. The colossal shrimp cocktail was super fresh. The family style salad was delicious...and the Ketel One martini was the best I ever had. Also, very reasonably priced. Great for a date night, girls or boys night out or a family outing. There were only a total of 4 people in the restaurant (should have seen this as a warning) Take out (1 year later): We threw out our food and lost our appetite. Walked to get something to eat before a movie, turns out this was the real horror film. Walked in no hostess or had no idea where to sit. Sat down, ordered a Peroni and they were out of it. Waitress finally comes by and says it'll take a few more minutes. After we said that wouldn't work for us because we had to go, she said she could some how take our food out at that moment. So, it magically could be ready in a minute? How? Food comes out, penne vodka was cold and the reason it came out so fast was because they just threw it on a plate. No presentation. Then also had the Luigi chicken, which was the worst part. I had to spit it out in one bite because it was so freezer burned and tasted like fish. It was inedible. Pushed the food to the side cause it was so bad. We walked out so disgusted by the food and another family asked us if our food was terrible as well. They told us that their shrimp was rotten, and other appetizers were as well. They also said it took about 40 minutes for their apps to come out. After living in the area for over 20 years, my husband and I decided to check the place out. It was Friday Aug 16, 2013. We chose to sit outside because the weather was so crisp and clear. BIGGEST MISTAKE WE MADE!! 1) Table we sat on was filthy and as we sat there the waitress served our drinks and placed our silverware on the dirty table. So we moved on our own. Our bread came out and she didn't bring out the butter. Our salad came out and we had no salt and pepper. 2) We ordered a combo appetizer which was described as Fresh Calamari, bruschetta and clams on a half shell. IT WAS DISGUSTING! All frozen items I could have bought in any supermarket. this was a $16.00 dish ( NOT EVEN WORTH A PENNY) 3) Almost an hour has gone by and our waitress had only come to check on our table once. If it wasn't for a boy who came outside who we were able to call we would have had to go in for butter, salt and pepper. My husband had to get up and bring the appetizer back into the restaurant. They offered us a cold antipasto instead. Reluctantly my husband said ok. 4) Our second appetizer was composed of about 7 pieces combined of rolled up ham, salami and some kinda cheese that was hard as a rock. THEY SERVED US PLAIN ROLLED UP COLDCUTS THROWN ON A PLATE. 5) Finally our entrée came after the waitress asked if she should put the order in. Over an hour has passed by and we haven't eaten a bite. Within not even a minute she brings our dinner out which was clearly just sitting under a hot light right after she served our first appetizer. WHAT CAN I SAY! SAME ISSUE! 6) My husbands Steak was overcooked, chewy and cold inside and again it had frozen vegetables. My stuffed pork chop (per the menu) was supposed to be served with risotto. I also got frozen vegetables and the stuffing of ham and fresh mozz looked brown inside and the chop was breaded and burnt. To say the least.. we asked to bag our meals as we figured we would give to the dogs when we got home. THEY STILL SIT IN THE FRIDGE. I WOULD NOT EVEN FEED THAT TO THEM!! We asked for our bill and to our surprise it was $73.00. I even had to go inside the restaurant myself to ask for the bill as well as ask for a carry out container. In disgust I threw a $5 bill for a tip and paid the bill, after I had to ask they fix the charge for the appetizer we returned. If it wasn't that there was ONE table inside (mind you on a Friday night around 9pm or so) I did not cause a scene asking to fix the bill for a horrible meal and service. So I chose to call from the car on our way to Dairy Queen for a huge ice cream to get the tastes out of out mouths. Manager Anna of course was apologetic and offered to give US a second chance as she put it. I told her I would rather eat a raw chicken before I set foot in that place again and asked her to adjust the bill. She told me she would need to speak with the owner and would call me the following day. Today is Sunday Aug. 18 and I've yet to hear from her. I've left 2 messages and of course... she's never there. They show a Zagat rating outside their front door... I have contacted them and they show no record of ever rating the place. I will call and personally look for this lady Anna as I feel as I was robbed of what was supposed to be A FRIDAY NIGHT OUT TO RELAX AND ENJOY A GREAT MEAL WITH A LOVED ONE... I came here as a kid in the late 1950's, back in NY on a visit, my cousins and I decided to take a walk down memory lane. I remembered the garlic bread and veal parmigiana so I gave it a try. I visited Luigi's tonight with my girlfriend and two other friends. We were excited for a good Italian meal. As we arrived at the location, we were immediately wary of the grungy looking exterior, but gave the first impression a pass since we've been to some odd places with amazing food. Once inside, we were seated promptly. The waitress asked us what we would like to drink and disappeared for about 20 minutes and took our appetizer order. We weren't provided with bread until after we had asked for it, which took an additional 10 minutes to come out. It was accompanied by a complimentary salad which was probably the best part of this meal. We also placed our entree order at this time. Half an hour after, our appetizers came out. Appetizers: Appetizer sampler - We requested the cold antipasto, bruschetta, and clams casino. The first mistake was that we received freezer burned calamari instead of the clams. The cold antipasti was scarce at best, even for a sampler. The bruschetta was good. The waitress dropped the plates and took off. I had to walk tot he back of the restaurant to get her attention to the mistake. She came with another plate and scraped the calamari off the platter and said it would be a few minutes for the clams. The clams were ok at best. Stuffed portabella mushroom - one medium sized mushroom with spinach and cheese. It tasted good, but not worth the $9 price tag. From the time we ordered the entrees to receiving them, approx 50 minutes. Had the restaurant been busy, I would be much more understanding. The restaurant was roughly 40% seated. Entrees: Gnocchi - The gnocchi was overcooked tot he point that it was mushy and the sauce was very acidic. Chicken Marsala - This was a decent plate. Good balance between taste and quantity. Rosemary Pork Tenderloin - This dish was overpowered with rosemary. The pork was very tough and very difficult to cut and chew. Not to mention the potatoes which were black with rot!!!! When we told the waitress about the Pork dish, she took the plate and walked away not asking if we would like a replacement or something else. I had to once again go fetch the waitress who disappeared in the back. Having not found her, I spoke with the bartender who asked if we would like something else. We requested a chicken parm to go as we were done at this point. The chicken parm took about 15 minutes. The waitress dropped it off and walked away. The bartender came over a few minutes later and asked if we would like coffee and dessert. We said no thanks we are finished. We sat there for about 15 minutes longer and had to get up again to ask the waitress, who was doing nothing, to provide us with a check. It is extremely difficult for me to believe anyone would give this restaurant more than 2-3 stars unless they are either family or family friends of the owners. We reluctantly left a 10% tip, which was way too much. This establishment was pathetic and we will not be returning. read more

It was prepared with marinara (still terrible, for the record) instead of the cream butter sauce requested. Dried Basil. I have never, ever seen a restaurant that cooks with DRIED basil. There was no soup delivered. The STAR of the show was the bread, which was warm & appeared to be fresh-baked. Long and short: I paid $30.00 for a roll. It was the only thing really worth eating. How is it possible to mess up an order on so many points, serve such awful food, and stay in business? I have LITERALLY had better food in a hospital. Never again. Stay away! I want a refund! This is by far the worst pizzeria I have ever ordered from. I waited an hour and 15 mins and the pizza still didn't arrive when they told me it would arrive in 20 mins. I called the restaurant to ask if the pizza had gone out yet and they said the driver is almost back to pick up my pizza so I told them not to even bother bringing it anymore. For some reason the driver still came and when he called to notify me that he had arrived I was no longer there and he proceeded to curse at me. One person ordered the filet mignon - medium well and received a raw steak (see attached photo) that appeared to have been "cooked" via microwave. From what I've read not much has changed, which is disappointing. I've since moved out of the area but still work nearby and this restaurant does have an iconic retro look from the outside... I wish they would capitalize on that. From what I understand, the original family that owned this restaurant passed it down to relatives by marriage, and cultural differences may be a factor. I have no idea if this is true. But it's such a cozy place with such a great look from the outside, and a bar in an area where nobody else has a bar in their restaurant. This restaurant has an iconic look from the outside. It's been a staple in town for years, but I never heard anyone talk about it. To be honest I went there for the first time late last year after my grandfather had passed away. We had the re-passe lunch at Luigi's. On that occasion the food was really good (catering style) and the staff was really kind. A few months later my GF and I went back for dinner. The food was pretty good from what I remember, but the problem is with the way things are run. The staff is really nice, but extremely slow. I don't think they ever get about more than eight people in there at a time. And most of the people seem like they've been coming to Luigi's every Saturday night since 1952 if you know what I mean.
