They also had pretty good burgers and hot dogs. The chain started in Illinois, and at its peak had over 1800 locations. There are only 22 stand alone spots now, 6 in Virginia, 1 each in North Carolina & South Carolina. We were on our way back from Richmond when I saw this little place, and we swung to grab a snack. We ordered a cone of Vanilla, and a Chili Dog. The chili dog was very good, but the ice cream was outstanding, as good as we'd remembered it being!

Our 8 year old girl got a banana split and really enjoyed it. Our other 8 year old girl got an Oreo milkshake and said it was as good as Dairy Queen. Our 5 year old boy got a cone with chocolate ice cream in a chocolate shell and really enjoyed it. I got a Reese's Cup blitzen and it was very good with the vanilla ice cream and Reese's Cup mixed in and was hard. The blitzen was way better than Dairy Queen. My wife got a hot fudge brownie and there were two brownies with vanilla ice cream in between. She said it was good but the brownie could have tasted better. Overall, we all really enjoyed it. It is now call Sundae's Restaurant now which was why our phone map app didn't recognize "Tastee Freez" when we typed it in.

Another fun and "low-key" romantic Valentine's Day dinner!…read more Food, service and atmosphere were perfect and fun! Love that we got to do this again and appreciate the whole evening! I even stepped outside of my plain hot dog and got the Carolina dog with pulled pork, bbq sauce and coleslaw' so yummy! Also tried the pickle fries for the first time and they were delicious! Dominion Dogs never disappoints!

They also came with fries or onion rings, funnel cake fries, and a drink of your choice. Two of the guys had the root beer and said it was pretty good. Now as for the dogs, the two guys that had the coneys were happy with them, although one was hoping for a little more spice from the chili, but it was by no means bad. The burnt ends dog was said to be pretty freaking good. As for the American dog, we'll that was a different story. It wasn't a bad dog, but it tasted like it had been boil cooked and not cooked on the griddle. Additionally, it wasn't really that warm. I guess warm is a good description for it. It would have been better if it was hot and you could see some cooking marks on it. Alas, it was and had neither. But again, it wasn't a bad dog, but it could have been much better. The onion rings were pretty tasty though, as were the funnel cake fries and crinkle cut fries. This night was Wednesday, so it was trivia night. At 6:30. At about 6:00 people really started to come in, and by 6:30, the place was packed. Guess trivia night is a big hit... The people working there were super friendly and you fealt as if they were happy to be there. I would have given it 5 stars, but tbe warm dog just brought my experience down a bit. But don't let that stop you from going there, because you'll probably have a good time with good food and good people.

I tried one with a red pepper jelly on top and it was fantastic. I was greeted with some warm faces that came in and had me sit immediately. The stuff that my waist line thanks me for not cooking, if you know what I mean... I opted for the country fried steak, mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese, brother chose the pork chop special with mashed potatoes and pickled cukes and onions. The mains were amazing. The pork chop was huge and thick and delicious, the country fried steak was so good, the gravy on both was delicious. The price was a steal. They were both amazing. The mashed potatoes were also both delicious, definitely homemade and not from a box. The baked Mac and cheese was just okay. It tasted like normal homemade Mac and cheese, nothing particularly special, but then I feel like baking it always just dries it out and sort of breaks the cheese sauce, so I would definitely skip that next time in favor of something else. The cukes were also just okay, we got it to feel like we were trying a healthier option, but will probably just splurge for something else next time. We were a little disappointed though, I do understand that this is a local restaurant and some things are harder to get and keep on the menu and keep in stock, especially if you don't want waste, but we initially tried to order corn cakes but they were out, then rolls but they were out, then went with biscuits. Then brother got the last pork chop plate. They have been out of pickle fries for "awhile now". If you aren't particularly picky about what you want to order, cool. I only particularly like cornbread/corncakes, so I was pretty bummed. The people are super friendly though, and a lot of locals seem to come by for their hotdogs (like, a LOT. Clearly we are missing something not ordering the dogs.) I'll definitely be back on days that I had a really healthy breakfast and plan on breaking my healthy streak with something fried and covered in gravy.
