I am so confused as to how this doctor has any positive reviews. I took my mom, with dementia, to see Dr. Lugo to discuss her problems, which included memory issues, disorientation, confusion and terrible insomnia. He would ask my mom questions and when she'd answer partially or incorrectly, I'd add to the answer because I wanted him to have a clear understanding of her condition. Each time I added information, he huffed and puffed with frustration. When I asked him why he was frustrated, he said he wanted to speak with the patient. My mom was disoriented, confused, and unable to articulate her problems. It's easy to get a person like that in and out of your office without having to actually figure out how to help her. He sent her home with the diagnosis that she's fine. One week later, she was hospitalized due to the an increased level of disorientation to where the police had to get involved. After a week in the emergency hospital in the psychiatric wing, she was then transfered to a psychiatric hospital for another 3 weeks. Clearly his dismissive diagnosis that she was fine was very inaccurate. If he could just have collaborated with me, a person without dementia, who has a lot of insight about her symptoms and her history of behavior, maybe he could have proactively referred her to the right place or started her on a medication to prevent having any kind of psychotic breaks. But he huffed and puffed instead whenever I spoke with him! So fast forward, upon her release from the psychiatric hospital, she was instructed to see her doctor for a follow up to get more prescription medication. At the follow up with Dr. Lugo, I sent my dad to take her since this doctor made it clear that he did not intend to speak with me regarding my mom's care. My dad told the doctor that she has insomnia and needs some kind of sleep aid (many don't work) and asked about 2 kinds I had researched that are known to not be addictive and not to affect a person who's mind is already in a bad state like hers. He told my dad that she doesn't need to sleep and that he didn't want to put her on any kind of sleep aid. My brother is a neurologist out of state and he called me to say, "hey, make sure the doctor prescribes mom a sleep aid". All the doctors at the first and the second hospital had her on sleep medication as they noticed that without it, her sundowners was worse the next day. Simple internet research concludes that people with Dementia (and just everybody in general) really need to sleep, it's very important. But this doctor said to let her not get any sleep. How easy it is for someone visiting for 20 minutes with a person to dismiss their sleep needs so that they can have more combative and aggressive sundowners symptoms later as he's not the one having to get yelled at or hit by my mom when she's in her heightened confused state. It didn't seem to me nor my father that Dr. Lugo actually cares about his patients. I am so confused as to how he has any good reviews. He had a nice bedside manner when speaking to my mom which I can see as being interpreted as being a caring and helpful doctor. However, his care helped her land in the hospital the following week so we've already updated her primary doctor with the insurance. Those two visits were not only a total waste of time but they were costly in that she was dismissed without being given actual proper medical care and got worse between the first and second visit. read more
