When I'm Zipn in and out of College Station, I'll often get gas or convenience store stuff here,…read morewhich is actually a Shell. I was feeling like a Shell of my former self, so I came here for gas and then I felt better. This is a cute little Shell right in the middle of the central heart of the impressive and eclectic city of College Station, right by the mega college campus, where the A&M students will stop when they're close to campus and get some high price gas. Often on their parents' credit cards (where's the lie). There's much cheaper gas around town, so I don't recommend filling up here, but it's conveniently located if nothing else.

After having been through three incarnations of this place in the past year and a half, we've…read moresettled on a unifying name: "The Janky Potato." We shop here because of proximity and variety, but apparently no matter what name they've settled upon, we will end up with bad potatoes. That said, it's kind of awesome in there. It's huge and currently really clean (they've had some Health Dept. issues in the past). The meat department is CRAZY filled with product, at super cheap prices. There's a super-cool bakery that practically gives away baked goods at three for $1; and the dairy prices can't be matched, anywhere. It gets three stars because of the management changes (and subsequent changes in quality), and the frequent cleanliness issues (product not replaced and looking shitty; obvious freezer/refer issues/Health Dept. citations). The staff is at least friendlier now than they used to be (in that we were talked about to our faces with the assumption we couldn't understand Spanish) and the produce is currently better. We've seen a new HEB is going up across the street; we'll of course check it out, but will probably remain faithful to the Janky Potato.

It's small but it's one of those places that remembers who you are when you walk in the door. Everyone who works at this local store is so friendly and very helpful. You would think being one of two grocery stores in town that the prices would be outrageous. Not true though! The meat market prices are very reasonable as well as the fresh produce. I'll be honest I was shocked because you figure a small town grocery store the prices would be higher than a big city store. The weekly sales are very impressive also. This is my new go to store.

Store clean and nicely organized, but I have noticed expired products still out on shelves or racks for sale to customers, so have to be careful with that. Prefer this store over Brookshire Brothers which is way too expensive; however, Brookshire produce has Harlan's beat for sure.
