Lucca has been closed for years. There is a smokey Turkish restaurant in the space now. The neighborhood is a bit sketchy.

Bosco Brera - Bosco Veggy (€10): vegan mix dish of the day

I went here for the first time about a month ago…read more LOCATION: It's in the Brera District of the city, which I like because it's away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but it's still within walking distance of it all. It's also fairly nice and clean. 4/5 ATMOSPHERE: They have most of their seating inside, but there's a few tables right outside too. We sat outside and liked it. 4/5 SELECTION: Their menu isn't that big, but I appreciate that they have a lot of clearly-marked vegan options, and a lot of it is more unique for Italy -- i.e. it's not just another typical Italian tourist-trap-type restaurant. 4/5 WHAT I GOT: I got their Bosco Veggy, which is their vegan mix dish of the day. On the day I was there, it was a brown rice mix with mix-ins and toppings, black beans, zucchini, and some little cracker thing. It was the best meal I had while in Milan. The brown rice mix tasted unique and I'm not sure all that was in there, but it was tasty. The black beans tasted as expected, and the zucchini was good too -- it just could've been could a tad bit more thoroughly, but it wasn't a big deal. Anyways, all the ingredients tasted fresh and of good quality. The only major negative was that it was garnished with too much oil, especially the zucchini. But, other than that, it was great. And everyone else in my group liked their meals a lot too, so I'd definitely recommend this place. 4/5 SERVICE: The service was great. The employees were all really attentive and friendly. And our food came out in good timing. 4/5

They needed a little extra help this night as I think there was only one server. There was also a private party in the back. Wine selections are mostly organic (if not all). Reasonable prices too. We ordered a bread plate, cheese plate, seitan steak, and pizza (not shown). When we sat down, we were told there was no vegan mozzarella. This changed a few dishes for sure. The pizza would have been much better with it, but was still very good. The cheese platter and seitan steak were stand outs for us. The vegan cheeses made by the owner would make any omnivore go vegan. In fact, we came back the next day to purchase cheese and dessert to go. Soooo worth it. I wish they shipped to the US. Had we stayed longer, we would have eaten here every other day. We will definitely be back. This is the best vegan Italian restaurant in Milan!

The bowl was healthy, tasty and well-designed, coming with nicely seasoned tofu, black beans, quinoa, white rice, sautéed cabbage, and raw green leaves. Very nice, simple, tasty, healthy bowl. Good service and great environment. Recommended.

But when it comes to vegan food, I will go out of my way. I happened to be in the neighborhood, so I thought it to be the perfect occasion to treat myself to a Valentine's dinner (love yourself, haha!) The price is reasonable, give the quantity and quality. I got a "grande" plate (but honestly normal size, haha) where I got to pick from three sides to make an entrée plate. I picked a mushroom-based fried encrusted dumpling, greens, and triangular potato and pumpkin (I think?) slices. For dessert, I got a humble slice of vegan carrot cake topped with vegan cream! My entrée was 11 euros and with dessert everything was about 16 euros. While service is fast and it's easy to get your food right away if coming alone, there is a "pretentious" side to the restaurant, since the back of the restaurant was all reserved...so you are left to sit outside or on the counter near the entrance, which can be cumbersome if you want to eat inside at a more relaxed pace.

I dined alone and don't speak Italian, but the staff went above and beyond at every step. From explaining the dishes, to the wine pairings, to the number of staff perfecting every detail (at one point, I counted 8 staff members in a room of about 10 tables). When the bread came (with the course of vegetables in a circle in a jelly like sauce) I asked if I was supposed to eat the dish with the bread and the waiter said "you're in Italy, you eat bread when your heart tells you". I loved how unpretentious and sincere the comment was, especially when it is easy to feel overwhelmed by fine dining. The food was so delicious that my eyes watered on a couple of bites. Highlights were the amuse bouche (the dish with the sprouts growing) and the baba ganoush wrapped in dehydrated tomato (the dish with the slices of tomato), and the housemade red bean tempeh (far left in the picture with bread). The only lowlight was the mushroom (far right in the picture with bread). It's been several decades since I've eaten meat, but it had a really weird mouth feel similar to what I remember a glob of grisly animal fat to feel like.

Despite its Michelin star and vegetarian focus, both the food and service fell well below expectations. From the start, we felt pressured to purchase expensive wine before even settling in. The restaurant offers separate vegetarian and vegan tasting menus, but when I wanted vegetarian and my wife vegan, we were firmly told this wasn't allowed. A senior staff member even came over to explain--quite patronizingly--that we 'didn't know our food' and had to choose one menu for both of us. Most dishes were mediocre at best, making the Michelin recognition hard to understand. Even basic details like torn table napkins reflected a lack of care. Overall, this was not the special experience we hoped for, and I would not recommend Joia.
