What a deal . Lots of regulars here and we see why. The food is good, hot, lots of choices, good deals for seniors too Large dining room with smaller private rooms for events Love the big wall of window Service is great at the line and tables One less star because many items aren't listed. And things that are like Ham, they were out of. Easy find off highway. Free private lot parking

Came for Thanksgiving dinner. Portion size was good. Service was great. We went in an hour before closing and staff were very friendly and upbeat. We did not feel rushed to leave. All the food was delicious and they had plenty of pies. They did not have any cake options but I did attribute it to getting there so late they must of ran out. Free parking!

Luby's will always hold a special place in my heart. I live in CA, but grew up in The RGV. I grew up celebrating birthdays, graduations & anniversaries at a Luby's Cafeteria. My mother always said there was something for everyone here. The ambience is southern hospitality at its finest. The staff are attentive and service is great; staff are always willing to help. The food is nothing to write home about, but it's pure comfort food. My favorites are the fried fish and the chicken fried steak. I had always talked to the SO about Luby's & we finally made it! We split the fish and chicken fried steak and got two sides each... the Mac and cheese and I got the mashed potatoes and we also got the fries okra, and corn bread jalapeño muffins. Food was homey and a great value. We spent about $32 for the two of us and we took the cherry pie to go. Can't wait to be back when we are back in TX!

I've often bemoaned the "death" of Luby's Cafeteria but a visit to the Main Avenue location has resurrected this business in my lunchtime rolodex. The sights, smells, and bustle here took me back to the days of yore when Luby's sat at the pinnacle of the cafeteria world (at least in Texas). Fried fish, Chicken Fried Steak, Liver and Onions, Salisbury Steak, Enchiladas, Pork Chops, and more. Fried okra, mac&cheese, steamed broccoli, Salads, hot rolls, and copious desserts. Oh my! It was hot, fresh, flavorful, and conjures the childhood memories of good food in a wholesome atmosphere...San Antonio style. I'm glad we still have Luby's.

I have been coming to this location since I was little and I'm sad to say this location use to be much better back then. The customer service here has dropped significantly here. The staff that work the check out counter constantly rush you and are not pleasant at all. The food is decent but since it takes so long to get down the line and they have it feeling like a freezer in the building your food is cold by the time you sit down, not to mention my whole chicken fried steak fell out the breading I have never seen it do that before. I do understand this is a popular location but they definitely need to go back to having top tier service and food.

An old school cafeteria that's fun, value priced and true Texas culture & delicious. You can walk from downtown if you're adventurous like me- 20 minutes ish. The dining room is huge with lots of booths. Food is cafeteria style and it's delicious! I've had salmon, roasted chicken & whiting. There's fried chicken fried steak and cheese sauce. You won't go hungry . After 3 there's a senior special that's half price. Fun Texas style that's fading so go go go! Pro tip: jalapeño biscuits are

Who knew seniors (age 55+) get a discounted meal here? The Senior Luann Platter costs $7.99, which makes it cheaper than most fast food nowadays. The baked fish was much tastier than the fried fish. The green beans had no flavor at all, but the mashed potatoes were out of this world!

    Burnt liver
    JoAnna G.

My husband had fish with , broccoli and cheese, macaroni, and cheese & cornbread & his plate was perfect . I had liver and onions with mashed potatoes and fried okra . My liver looked fine on the top side but when I flipped it over it was all burnt I had to send some of it back to be replaced when I got to the second piece of liver and I flipped it over it was burnt as well. I wasn't going to send that back. I was over it already. Over half the booths were not bussed and they were filthy. They either had dirty trays, sitting on the them or they were not wiped down at all .

For a starter we shared the cornbread with another couple and it was plenty for 4 people. If you are from out of town and looking for some Texas-shaped vittles or just want something substantial to stretch your meal I recommend it! Very tasty and filling. For my main I had the scallops with creamed corn risotto. It was a dainty portion but the flavors were nice. My husband had the short rib tagliatelle which he loved. It was very rich and filling. We had the buttermilk pie again for dessert and this time it tasted sweeter than I remembered. It was good but we couldn't finish it. Idk if it was my tastebuds or if it was different. Anyways still a great meal overall and we will be back!

Checked Yelp for dinner suggestions so Doc drove us to the paid lot next to where all the Cinderella lit up carriages drawn by horses were lined up. It seemed the boats going up and down the River portion of the Walk were busier. While we were walking I had my eyes open for a table with a view. We stopped at Four Brothers. The receptionist went over suggestions on the menu on her outdoor podium. Cornbread in the shape of Texas, shareable items like Dino ribs for $82, plus Pork Shank and ice tea completed our order. Everyone was very friendly. We had an exceptional view and we had more than enough food that we had to ask for take out boxes. My favorite was the Mac & cheese though I'm usually not a fan. This dish used cork screw shaped pasta and it was moist and not stuck together. I had to share a photo of it with Sweetie who is in Tokyo right now. Doc liked the pimento for the cornbread. As it was almost 9 pm we decided to pass on the boat ride but just walk on the other side with shops and more eateries. We're back on the road again tomorrow to Arizona.

The food was not the best especially for the price. The drinks on other hand were amazing. My server Marah toke great care of me. Attentive, funny, and well knowledgeable. Drinks were AMAZING! Bartender Rob made the best Negroni I've ever had. I asked him to use whatever gin he thought best--result was an artistic smooooooth full-bodied drink. Told him when I was done I'd lick the glass if it wasn't considered so uncouth for a 'mature' lady like myself to do so Hubby's Buffalo Trace bourbon old fashioned was also outstanding. Rob was the bartender last night who did such a great job, and his work was even better tonight. We highly recommend The EsquireTavern for excellent cocktails. We love the long wood bar and high copper ceiling upstairs, but love the intimate speakeasy atmosphere downstairs even more. We'll definitely be back every time we're in San Antonio! First review, Friday night: Drinks were great (Manhattan and Bourbon Old Fashioned). REAL drinks, no complaints at all about those. And the bartenders were very friendly and helpful. Those aspects of the Esquire get 5+ stars from us. But the appetizers were not good, close to inedible. It was about 8:30pm or so, so maybe they were getting ready to close out the kitchen but the chalupitas with chicken tasted like rubber, and no flavor at all. The seafood platter had something in it that was breading with shell inside, but no meat of any kind. We couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be. The shrimp was good and the fish was good but those other things... We'll always love the drinks, the long wooden bar, and the ambiance at the Esquire Tavern, but we'll eat somewhere else and come here for before or after dinner drinks. (See update above to this review for when we returned the next night for after dinner drinks.)
