My walking tour around the city culminated with a tasting back at the lovely wine shop, and not only was Francisco extremely knowledgeable about the authentic and off the beaten path places to visit in Lisbon, but he was also an outstanding historical guide, spoke great English, and kept me laughing all day. I'd read so many positive reviews about his food and wine trail tours that I had high expectations, which he completely exceeded - it was an incredible value. Venha Vinho's tour availability can be limited due to their great reviews, so request space early and make sure to ask for Francisco!

Alright, next up on my semi-overwhelming remaining list of cool places I went to when I was in…read morePortugal a couple months ago - one of three distinct, very similar spots to try locally made craft ginja, so obviously I made a crawl of it and tried all three in a row, the first day I got to Lisbon. All three are, similarly, very tiny bars, basically just alcoves, no seating, large enough to fit a couple people standing inside if it's raining, which it was. Not a spot people stick around a long time at, which is reasonable, since all they sell are shots of ginja, and to-go bottles of ginja. They don't sell it in shotglasses, unlike the other two - but they do give you a cherry if you want, also unlike the other two. Personal verdict, it's definitely better than do Carmo... between here and Sem Rival is really up to the individual, both are great. It's boozy but also definitely full of fruit and spices, and just sweet enough but not sickly. Good ginja is great, it's wacky nobody's tried marketing it in the US. Wish I could've taken home a full bottle of each (I'd already earmarked almost a whole suitcase for Port wine, obviously.)

Ah, I remember this historic spot from my first trip to Lisbon 16 years ago. My young tour guide…read moreback then took me here to have a cup (actually a shot) of ginjinha, the traditional Portuguese sour cherry liqueur. When Jamie W and I inadvertently walked by recently on our first evening in Lisbon, I realized we needed to stop and do the same thing. I had next to no memory of it, just that it didn't kill me. Jamie was rather hesitant, but I just showed my typical insolence and walked up to the proprietor behind the counter. He was already in mid-pour, and I actually remembered to say "com elas" to indicate we wanted cherries in our drinks. They were only 1,50€ per cup (Photo 8). We sipped them in seconds. The puckery flavor led to a nice finish. We were on our way in less than five minutes. DRINK - 4 stars...if sour cherry is your thing, have at it AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...just an open door and a bottle SERVICE - 3.5 stars - he pours and collects, though he liked the way I said "com elas" TOTAL - 4 stars...a must-do ritual for any tourist in Lisbon RELATED - Exploring Lisbon?
