Have you ever been in the CBD at lunchtime on a weekday and wondered what the huge line is on Adelaide Street next to Queen's Plaza? Well, it's not an ATM, and it's certainly not Aesop giving out free samples. It's Love Sushi Roll. I know what you're thinking...why are people using up their entire lunch break to line up for a a roll or two of sushi when there are plenty of other sushi bars in the city? Well the answer is simple. Because Love Sushi Roll is awesome. It's made fresh and with simple yummy ingredients and is arguably the best sushi in the city. My personal favourites are karaage and crispy chicken with avocado. If you decide to give this place a go I would heed my previous warnings about peak-sushi hours. Avoid it between about 12pm-1.30pm Monday- Friday otherwise it may test your patience, but at only $2 for quite large rolls (I'm hard pressed eating 2) it is great value for money if you're willing to wait.

There is an art to the perfect sushi. I heard second hand from somebody who possibly had a passing interest in Japanese culture, that the entire philosophy behind sushi is that you should look at it and feel full and content... the eating is entirely secondary. This is not the case with LR Sushi. The product is delicious, the line is long and you quite simply can never eat enough to curtail your appetite for it. LR Sushi (terrible name) is located along Adelaide Street near the Queens Plaza Starbucks and Central Station. If you are passing through the CBD around lunchtime it is likely that you will see the line before you will see the store. They actually have a staff member patrolling the line so that the masses do not block the entrance to neighboring stores who are trying to sell expensive bags. It is really quite easy to get whipped up in the frenzy! The product itself is reasonably priced and tastes delicious. I have never had a bad experience with the food at LR Sushi and I have only ever heard of one person who didn't enjoy it. This being said, I believe that this individual may not have been in the correct frame of mine to appreciate it. They have a wide range of flavors to choose from, some old, some new, some Western and some authentically of the East. In short, for those who enjoy sushi you will find something you like. This being said, you don't have much time to make up your mind. The line is long and demanding. One must be prepared to simply spot something they think they'll enjoy and order a lot of it. If you weren't socially inept like myself you'd simply step to the side and say you are still making up your mind. In short I am a fan of everything about LR Sushi except for its name. Definitely check out what the hype is about next time you are in the CBD.

There's now quite a few branches of this food hall type outlet. They've opened one in MacArthur Central. What I love about them is that the rice is all right and you can get brown rice rolls too. They have some really cool different stuff to sample. Today I'm having a beef sukiyaki roll that has a tasty slathering of mustardy mayo and a stalk of asparagus and avocado, and a raw runs sesame roll. I've rounded off my lunch with a $2 cup of miso soup. Next time I want to get the honey mustard pork and the lobster salad rolls.

So when the ever so classy Hanaichi Sushi Bar opened up in the Wintergarden, I had very high hopes. The owners are very Japanese, very clean, very organised and very into their Japanese Cuisine. It shows. Down to the fine detail of the menu, the drink bar and the fancy set up of the train. The food is fresh, the seafood fresher and the waitresses and waiters are very attentive. The chairs on the sushi bar itself are a little narrow to my liking though, on a busy night, you are quite literally shoulder to shoulder to the person next to you. A bit non-romantic. The food, I like the classy little salad rolls they have on the train... they are fresh, sweet and very healthy. The sashimi is carved like it should be. Not too thin, not too thick, but just enough to melt in your mouth. My only complaint is that the chicken karaage has a slight curry hint to it's marinade.. not a big fan of the curry flavoured chicken. Other than that, you have a pretty positive experience at this place, it's a great place to bring a date too... they have tables for that, so avoid sitting on the sushi bar side of things if you do.

Once you sit down, a waiter immediately asks for your drink order and any special food requests you may have. The sushi train is fairly extensive with a good selection of raw and cooked choices. My favorite is a partially seared tuna nigri with some sweet ponzu sauce layered over. The prices are decent and you should be able to get very full for less than 25 bucks. Be sure to ask for fresh ginger and wasabi!

It's my favourite sushi haunt and it definitely helps that it's on the same street as my work building. With unique plates filled with buttery fish and a wide variety of cooked options including karaage, gyoza and dumplings there's something to please everyone. Service has been exceptional each time I eat here with water glasses being refilled regularly and helpful staff at every turn. It can be slightly more expensive than your bog-standard suburban train, but I'm willing to pay for the atmosphere and comfortable surrounds.

They have simplified their 'plate pricing' by only have 2 types of plates on the menu - all plates with coloured rings around the edges are $4.50, the patterned plates / premium items are $8.00. Wide selection of fresh made sushi rolls, nigri, entree items (gyoza, prawn parcels, chicken karaage bites etc), premium items, desserts and miso soup on the sushi train, but you can also order from the menu. Tried a mini tempura prawn udon bowl soup for $8.00 and it was awesome. Brown rice and black rice sushi rolls on the train and lots of vegetarian options. They have a little takeaway window at the front of the restaurant with sushi rolls for a quick takeaway lunch. The chefs work fast, and all items on the sushi train are fresh, fresh, fresh. Takeaway can be made to order. Great spot for lunch, nice ambiance and friendly staff. Just make sure you get in early to beat the lunch crowds! Takeaway and catering also available.

After a tip of from a friend in the area, however, I decided to roll the dice - or should i say, rice! I was greeted by an older lady with friendly face the moment I walked in the door. And after trying manfully but ultimately unsuccessfully to get the damn thing fully closed I took in my surroundings. I absorbed the brown colour scheme, three smallish tables and... I had taken in my surroundings. This was clearly one of those places were all the action was saved for the kitchen, or so i hoped. I looked up to see a menu board that boasted well over fifty items, including typical Japanese favourites (teriyaki noodles, Japanese curry) to more out of the box fare (octopus balls, eel). I went with a dish that was accompanied by a yummy looking photo and while I'm not entirely sure what the ingredients were it sure was tasty. As I ate I noticed the staff preparing fresh sushi rolls behind the counter and opted to try the spicy beef. Perhaps not a traditional choice but one I can heartily recommend. A sentiment that goes for Oishi Sushi also.

My most recent visit was for my birthday last month. Its hard celebrating being away from family and friends but the staff truly made me feel special. I even chatted with one of the waitresses for awhile during one of the slow periods which made for a very lovely dinner. I decided to get the Také No Hana for my birthday. There were so many courses that I barely finished all my food. My favorites definitely were the nori crisps, hiramasa kingfish, and miso caramelized 'glacier 51' toothfish. Take-out uncut sushi rolls aren't something you find in Taiwan, Japan, or even the U.S., so I was rather amused at first. After trying several places around the city, including LR Sushi and ones in Myer center, my favorite is somehow still Sushiro on Adelaide Street. I know that LR Sushi is way more popular for some reason, but I really didn't like what they do with their sauces, and the ingredients actually didn't taste as fresh as Sushiro's, which is pretty much across the street. I got the fresh salmon roll, and the salmon was indeed fresh! I also got the dragon roll, which was also good. They don't skimp on their ingredients, like some of the other sushi take-out stands, so if you're looking for a quick sushi fix in the city, I recommend Sushiro!
