I know I should have taken the shot before I started digging into my spicy karaage chicken bomb but whattayawant I was hungry
Raz S.

tbh I was really in the mood for a Sunday afternoon late brekkie with bacon and eggs, but after trekking halfway across Brisbane playing lost tourist I was starting to get hangry and my mission parameters were becoming more lax. I saw a sign out the front of Izakaya Goku advertising a $15 lunch special and I'll tell y'all right now fam, anyone who wants to give me miso soup as part of a meal has got off to a pretty good start! I ordered the spicy karaage chicken bomb with steamed rice & the aforementioned miso soup. The presentation was definitely the highlight of this meal - the soup came out in this tiny little bowl with a smaller bowl inverted on top as a lid to keep the steam in. When I took the lid off, I got a yummy whiff of miso flavour. The soup itself wasn't amazing (I thought it was just a little bit too thick) but it's pretty hard to stuff up miso soup so I still enjoyed it. I wasn't expecting the karaage to be drenched in spicy sauce, which to tell the truth was a little cloying. But again the presentation was great, and it didn't actually taste *bad*, just not amazing. All up I would be willing to come here again, but it didn't blow me away - I think if it weren't for the way the meal was presented and the Japanese music playing, they'd have lost a star.

With this deliciously cold weather & the sun just warming our skin, we found ourselves wandering around West End today, with an unexpected little find that soon became a delightful surprise. Izakaya Goku in West End has only been open for 4 days, but with our experience we can assure you this may soon become a go to in West End for delicious Japanese delights. Izakaya literally means sit down sake shop but these days it's a Japanese Tavern - where one can drink with a menu of small dishes. We were immediately welcomed with warm service which continued throughout our experience. They have a selection of sashimi, Sushi rolls, Kushi Skewers, tempura, Okonomiyaki (japanese savoury pancake), hot a la carte,  cold a la carte  aswell as a range of beverages including japanese alcoholic beverages. We decided to try the: 1. Mouth watering Miso Glazed Seared Huon Tasmanian Salmon rolls, with avocado & cucumber. ($13.90) 2. Deep fried crunchy Soft shell crab in potato flour served with Yuzu citrus mayo. ($16.50) Okay, if there was 1 dish to try if you went to this place that would take you to heaven & back, it would have to be the Seared Salmon rolls. Holy cow these were so damn good! The flavour & the addition of the fried shallots on top was UNREAL! Super fresh also! We love softshell crab, & wow was this husband & wife of soft shell crab, & citrus mayo the perfect marriage! We decided to also order the Crispy Karaage chicken. ($10) This was so tasty, that we could've ordered a second round! The Green tea we ordered was beautiful & warmed us up from the cold. Overall, we really enjoyed all of our food.  The owners also own 2 other places called "Sushi point" at Victoria point & Cleveland, & had an opportunity to open Izakaya which can seat about 40-50 people. There's enough choice in the menu that suits everyone's budgets. They are fully licensed so you can also come in to enjoy some Sake, Japanese Whiskey or some Australian wines. Make sure you check out their lunch time specials for $15, which includes a lunch dish, salad & hot green tea.

Best gyozas and katsu I've had in a long time! Can't wait to go back. Service was exceptional.

We chose this sushi place because of it's predecessor - Sushi Station. We were sorely disappointed. By which I mean, Tokyo Express has taken the place of one of the most lacklustre sushi venues south of the city and turned it into an amazing, unique and exciting sushi restaurant that stands out compared to all of it's competitors. The staff do the usual adorably loud greeting when you enter, and offer seating at a booth or at the train. We always opt for the train as it has consistently been magnificently stocked with some of the most exciting and inventive plates I've encountered in my quest for the perfect sushi. They offer water or green tea upon seating and at each table/section of the train they have pots of soy, fresh (mild) Wasabi and pickled ginger. Tokyo Express have all manner of weird and wonderful plates ranging from the classic seared fresh salmon to almond crumbed king prawns, octopus balls, caviare and scallop tarts, fresh Japanese and western deserts and pretty much any type of fun and funky sushi dish you could imagine. I couldn't recommend Tokyo Express more. They have been quiet each time we have dined there and I really hope to rectify this! 5/5 will continue to go back. A quick hint - if you're choosing something that looks like it should be hot, ask them to heat it. Until they get as busy as they need to be, some things won't be piping hot (IE Karage, salt/pepper squid, gyoza) and they're more than happy to re-heat.

My favourite sushi place in Brisbane, wonderful atmosphere, delicious food, cheap and great…read moreservice, it's not flashy, but they sure know how to cook! My husband and I used to live really close but we have moved to the south side, and we still drive across the city to eat here. They have free green Tea and the wait for a table isn't too long, I'm not sure If management had changed but they used to do the second Tuesday and Wednesday of each month was every plate for $2! (they didn't serve the super fancy stuff on those nights but it was a great night out to eat till you pop!)

Apparently it gets really crowded at dinner time on the weekends so we had a great experience with it being less busy. The servers were all cheerful, friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is bright and colorful with a strong cartoony Japanese theme. Not a place I'd recommend for an intimate date (it gets loud in there!), but more for a group of fun-loving friends and/or family. We ordered a couple rounds each of chicken, beef and vegetable gyoza. All were tasty, but I personally preferred the chicken gyoza over the rest. Make sure to get your gyoza grilled, not poached! We also ordered some agadashi tofu which - word of advice for anyone with a palate like myself and the rest of my party - comes garnished with "fish flakes" which I found to be pretty atrocious. Next time I'll request it without :-) The chicken teriyaki was just okay, and very different from the teriyaki we have in California. The steamed edamame was fresh. The Kirins were flowing so generously that I lost count (thanks, Uncle Ben!). Also, order sake. Just do it.

Cute! As I wanted to go the Hakataya around the corner, and my partner wanted to get gyoza, this was the compromise. So I ordered the newly added Tonkotsu Ramen ($12). It certainly is not up to the levels I'm used to. But does the job to supplement a tray or two of gyoza. The frozen beer slushie: It's novelty certainly does not outweigh the displeasure of drinking this thing. The ultimate beer crime.
