Spring rolls

Mmm Asian food cravings fulfilled, check ! Quan Thanh was proposed as an idea for a Sunday lunch by a few family members who came here last year and convinced me I'd love it. Nestled on the outskirts of the main road in west end, Quan Thanh has one of the more prime locations as the parking is a bit more ample than if you were to eat out on the Main Street. My dad booked a reservation for us 8 adults and we requested a table inside with air conditioning (very necessary today). Inside is quaint and clean. Te decor is pretty basic but not tacky like I've found a lot of small Asian restaurants to be. The coolest part is that there are two side of the restaurant, one is where they cook the Vietnamese food, the other Chinese or Malaysian. That being said, you are seated with two different menus: one a full Vietnamese menu and the other is Chinese/Malaysian. The menus were quite extensive and it was great that they offer a pretty large selection of vegetarian dishes which accommodates my vegetarian aunt. The prices were pretty average, ranging from $15-20 per plate. I ordered the beef with basil and chili as shown in my photo, plus Spring rolls to start. The Spring rolls (with meat) were so good! I consider myself to be a spring roll expert and these were definitely one of the better ones. My main was good as well. I think it was a bit on the mild side which was a little disappointing but still very edible. Normally as a family, we have tons of leftovers. This time, almost everyone's plates were practically licked clean. Not one complaint was heard, which is always a great sign, especially not hearing one from my grandma who always says "I don't eat strange Asian food" but she took her leftovers home. BYO wine or beer was also a bonus! With the menus being so large, I plan on making a couple more trips back to try out some other dishes.

Gr8. Great food, good service, awesome spot to kick back and people watch on a beautiful winter's afternoon. Comparably Sing Sing is probably cheaper but it's probably a good idea to give them both a try and pick your favorite :-)

Having been to my fair share of vietnamese restaurants here in Brisvegas, I am happy to say that this one might just make my top 5 list. It's a strange little restaurant where another part of it is located a shop away. They didn't quite get the lease on 3 shopfronts, but they took 1 and 3... with a random shop leasing the inbetween. Service is fast, they have $12.50 lunch specials which include a drink but EFTPOS minimum is $15, so if you tack on their quite delicious fish cakes (with a hint of spicyness) on there, you can walk out super satisfied like me for $18.50. Not the cheapest, but the food is fresh, hot and dare I say quite tasty. Will be back.

I have been something of a regular at West End's Quan Thanh over the years always enjoying the food, the service and obnoxious green chopsticks. Unfortunately of late The Thanh has had a bit of a fall from grace. Never much to look at with it's plastic tables and chairs one could at least expect smiling wait staff and a genial atmosphere. On my last couple of visits I have been treated as more of an inconvenience than a customer and the place has been so packed and noisy the person immediately to my right had to struggle to hear me (a true tragedy believe me). And yet, i continue to go back for the food. The lemon grass beef rice vermicelli salad is always a hit and the sizzling mongolian lamb is well worth a look. The influx of people is probably due to its ever growing popularity and Quan Thanh might just be in a transitional phase as they adjust to that. But the standards in service and the general dining experience have undoubtedly slipped. I would recommend a lunch time visit when seats will be easier to find and food will be delivered promptly and without fuss. Just don't expect a smile.

Quan Thanh is a great place for cheap, casual, BYO dining. I've been there a couple of times now, dining inside and out and the experience has always been good for what you pay, despite Vietnamese not being my favourite cuisine. The first time I went, I let my boyfriend order. Never again. I ended up with a plate of 3 pork-filled rice paper rolls, topped with slices of processed pork roll, sprinkled with garlic chips, with a side of salad, sauce and a weird pork-filled, prawn-topped muffin. Not my cup of tea. The second time, however, I ate with friends and ordered a spicy beef noodle soup. It was good and very filling, but I had food envy of my friend's vermicelli noodle salad with chicken and sauce! The service there is a bit iffy--don't always expect a smile, particularly if they're busy, which they often are. When it's that cheap though, I'm prepared to cut them some slack on service as they draw large crowds some evenings and it gets pretty hectic. As I said, Vietnamese isn't my favourite, but for a cheap, fresh, not-too-unhealthy meal, Quan Thanh is a good spot.

Bbq wonton soup - taste way much better than it looks.

Another great and affordable Vietnamese place to add to my favs. We had fried wontons for the starter, and two soups. Both rare beef pho soup and bbq pork wonton soup were really tasty and generous. We left really stuffed! Will be back for sure :)

Conscious of the fact that I needed to eat something before my stomach began to munch on my already struggling liver, I ran into the first place I saw: Yuet Wah. Now, I normally hate ordering takeout for one because you always end up with too much rice and too much of one particular meal. On occasion I have compensated for this by buying two different meals with the intention of saving some for leftovers - only to find myself 30 minutes later with peking sauce all over my face and shirt with not a morsel left. My binge eating problem aside, Yuet Wah has an excellent range of solo diner options that includes both rice and a reasonable serving of a particular meal. Being the stinge I am I was ecstatic when I discovered that I was able to receive all of this for less then $10!! As I waited for my meal I began to check the rest of restaurant out. The dining area was a little uninspired but perfectly practical. There were tables, chairs and wine buckets, but that was pretty much it. I began to wonder what this place was before it was a restaurant that seems to offer meals from every single country in Asia. It quite clearly used to be a house. What type of people used to live in a house that is now a takeaway restaurant? The point I'm getting at is that the atmosphere wasn't convincing and seemed induce bouts of nostalgia. When I returned home I quickly ate my Mongolian Lamb with rice on my bed watching some documentary hosted by Oprah about the holocaust. As you can tell it wasn't the best evening ever but it may have had very little to do with my trip to Yuet Wah. The food was decent but it isn't something you'd write home about. Regardless I licked the takeaway container clean and went to bed.

Really enjoyed the fried rice and satay chicken. Perfect ratio of chicken to Veges. Service was…read morefriendly and the restaurant was really busy for takeout on a Thursday night which is always a great sign.

I must…read moreadmit, if it was not for the "Daily Lunch Specials" board they have at the front, I probably never would have discovered this place. I am now a die-hard fan of SunFay. The location of this place is a little awkward, it is in between an Op shop and a 7-11 and there is not much going in the front display apart from a really old looking menu and the specials board. Now onto that "specials board"- this place offers a large selection of meals for only $6.50 at lunch time! And these are not small serves either, they all include a serve of rice or fried rice (I always go for the fried rice). Not only that, but they are pretty tasty too! I really like their "Beef in Black bean Sauce", it is generous with the amount of beef and vegetables the give. The service is pretty quick too so if you are just after a quick cheap meal, this place is a very sensible option. This place just goes to show, a bad restaurant layout does not always mean bad food. Next time you are looking for a place to grab lunch in the area, consider SunFay.

First of all, the broth from the soup was virtually tasteless, which was disappointing as the wontons were delicious. The fried rice was inedible as the meat smelled foul - as if it was several days past its use by date... And its just now that I realized the same meat was in the wonton soup, too. Oh goody, I think i'm in for a treat in the next few days. The staff were polite when I came to pick up my food. I didn't even need to ask for my order because the owner came out with everything ready to go; I simply paid and left. I am inclined to say that the prices were quite high for what I received, especially in the case of the fried rice. I wouldn't visit here again.

It's been 4 years since I've been home to Brisbane and Indooroopilly's Westfield Shopping Centre…read morehas changed a lot. This yum cha (dim sum) place is a fancier version of the ones that have usually been in existence in Brisbane and is packed! I met my god-parents for lunch -- there were 6 of us -- on a Saturday around 11.30am. The place was already buzzing. The booth seating is uncomfortable and awkward. We are boxed in and squished. The steamed dim sum was sub-par.... the dumpling wrappers are mushy and thick. They fell apart the minute I picked them up with my chopsticks. The har gow and the seafood dumplings -- in fact, any of the dumplings that have the same wrapper -- all possessed this terrible wrapper. I don't recommend it. Seen juk guen (beancurd rolls) were really dense with a filling that is almost completely meat and nothing else. Flavor-wise it was fine. Chicken's feet were decent, with the claws cooked to a good consistency so it fell off the bone. The fried items were much better. The woo gok filled with taro was good -- nice and crumbly on the outside and the filling a good consistency. My favorite was the fried radish cake which were little nuggets of perfectly tender radish cake fried to a crispy perfection. The crispy pork belly (siu yuk) was awful. The fat is not rendered through well enough making the pork pieces unpleasant to eat. Service is hit and miss as well. One minute someone is efficient coming around to refill water, and then, nothing even when you ask for it. Maybe I'm comparing it to dim sum places in the US, but it's weird to me that they didn't have Chinese mustard (gai lat) when my son asked for it. The one thing I love about Chinese restaurants in Australia is that they give you soy sauce with slices of hot chile peppers in them. Wish restaurants in the US would offer this to you as a regular condiment.

There's some great areas in Brisbane I go to when I want Chinese food (The Valley, Darra etc) and I eat my head off and pay bubkiss. So why do I have to pay a fortune to eat in suburban Toowong? I guess if you're totally desperate and craving and stuck in Toowong you could grab a takeaway here (as previously mentioned by Stephanie the service is crud so avoid eat in) but I'd rather raid my pantry, buy some Chinese greens at Coles and make my own. Or better yet drive 20 mins to The Valley and eat there.

The food produced at China Kitchen is of fairly high quality though and probably offers the best Chinese food in Toowong. China Kitchen have obviously worked hard to make their restaurant look mighty swanky- the place is coated in shiny black and red, this creates a very chic atmosphere. As much as I like the food, I found communication with the staff to be difficult. Also, little things like table water get forgotten. For a restaurant that charges around $20 per dish, you would expect better service. As I have friends that live close by, I have ordered takeaway from here too. Takeaway is great option as the prices are friendlier and you do not have to complain about service when you do so. I remember being satisfied with all the dishes I have tried from here, the Mongolian Beef (always a winner in my books) is particularly good. If you want good Chinese Food in the Brisbane Western suburbs, China Kitchen is a good choice. Word of warning though- it is not the cheapest Chinese restaurant by far.
