Our consultation at the Albany Braces Latham office with Dr. Lawless and Melissa was outstanding…read more I brought in both of my daughters, who have very different orthodontic needs, and the evaluation was one of the most thorough and thoughtful we experienced anywhere. I believe that Dr. Lawless truly sees the whole child, not just the teeth. He took the time to explain each of my girls' unique issues in detail and made several important recommendations that extended beyond orthodontics, including referrals that genuinely helped us get the right care. His ability to clearly communicate complex information in a grounded, compassionate way really stood out. I also want to highlight Melissa, the office specialist who guided us through the process. She was warm, welcoming, and incredibly patient. She explained treatment options in a kid-friendly way and helped both of my children feel comfortable throughout the entire visit. Although we ultimately had to choose a provider who accepts our current insurance, the professionalism, kindness, and depth of care at Albany Braces made a lasting impression. I would absolutely consider returning for future treatment. I highly recommend the Latham office for anyone seeking a thorough, child-centered, and compassionate consultation experience.

I was unfortunate enough to have an impacted molar, one that would become the white whale to Dr. Lawless. He was obsessed with getting that molar in line. I had multiple surgeries on that molar, only to have Dr. Lawless's attempts be unsuccessful leaving a nub of molar exposed in my mouth, which my dentist says will eventually become infected and need to be removed. If we hadn't listened to Dr. Lawless I could've gotten braces off 2-3 years earlier, avoided multiple oral surgeries, and simply have to wear a retainer which is what I have to do now after listening to him. This is not the only issue I've had with Lawless. Myself and another patient have had to fight him to keep our 2 mm thickness retainers, the 1 mm ones were so painful I couldn't wear them. Lawless tried to convince me my pain wasn't so bad, even though thanks to the surgeries my tolerance for pain is pretty high. After politely insisting that my old retainer was better I saw Dr. Boghosian who, like a rational person, thought it made sense to keep the retainer since it literally did the same thing and was more comfortable for me. Dr. Boghosian is a sweetheart, and tries to work with the patient. The hygienist staff is very skilled, I knew them all after 5 years. Heaven help you if you disagree with Lawless.

Every other office provided full evaluations, imaging, and written treatment plans at no cost. Each doctor took their time, answered every question, and made us feel comfortable. This office was the opposite. About 30-35 minutes into the appointment, the orthodontist abruptly informed me that I would now need to pay for X-rays if I wanted the full explanation of the treatment plan. She could not tell me the cost and told me to "ask the office manager." When I reminded her that the consultation was supposed to be free, she replied, "It's free up to this point," and then questioned whether any other orthodontist had spent "an hour" with me. No other office has ever charged during a "free consultation," nor spoken to me that way. The tone throughout the remainder of the visit was condescending and dismissive. At the end of the consult, I asked for a written plan so I could review it and discuss it with her father (a completely standard request at every other office). Instead of simply providing it, she asked whether he needed to come in "to hear it himself." This was unnecessary and uncomfortable. Their quote was $4,300, the highest of any provider we visited, and I still left without a clear treatment plan in writing. The technician assisting us looked uncomfortable as well, which speaks volumes. After the exchange about the "free" consultation, the orthodontist never returned to the room. She was replaced by the office manager, who did not introduce herself, and who then closed the door for the rest of the appointment. The entire interaction felt abrupt and unprofessional. After very positive and thorough experiences at three other orthodontic offices, this was by far the most uncomfortable consultation we had. We will not be returning, and I would not recommend this office to any parent seeking transparent, respectful orthodontic care. If they want to charge for consultations, that is their prerogative, but do not advertise them as free and then bait-and-switch parents mid-appointment.

Additionally, communication was less than subpar in terms of treatment options and planning. Sad I begged my struggling parents to write this business a 5k check for 6 months of treatment. I called to see if they would do anything about it and they said they could restart me as a patient for more $. The only thing I appreciate about this office is that it taught me how NOT to treat my future patients or how to run a business.
