Enrolling our rescue dog at Loyal Canines (in Peabody) was the best decision we ever made for our pup. We were struggling with his leash reactivity and aggression towards other dogs. He also had a bad habit of jumping on people, high enough to bop them on the face. We hired an in-home trainer for 2 days, which was helpful with a few things but certainly not with the aggression and leash reactivity issues. We enrolled in the 3 week Bootcamp training session and recently completed it. Jay was AMAZING to work with. He's very calm and rational and ensured that any concerns that we had were addressed. We also know he treated our dog with care because when we went for our first follow up visit, Brewster was soooo excited to see Jay and gave him a lot of affection. Brewster does recall off leash and does not jump or bark excessively any more. He can walk right by dogs without freaking out. For just the few days we've had him back he's been the best companion we could want. Loyal Canines was recommended to us by a coworker who had his dog go through the 2 week Bootcamp training session and came back as a calmer, more confident, obedient dog. Our 11-month old female Chow-Chow recently completed a four-week board-and-train program at Loyal Canines with Jay. We decided to enroll her in a board-and-train program because we were not getting much success training her at home on our own. When we took her out, it almost looked like she was walking us instead of us walking her. In addition, she would not come to us when called, which always led to us chasing her if she accidentally got off-leash. She was also starting to show signs of aggression. We chose Loyal Canines because as part of the program, they expected us to come on a weekly basis to meet with the trainer and our dog and learn to implement what the trainer taught her since the last meeting with us. Many of the other board-and-train programs we researched wanted us to just drop our dog off and come back at the end of the program to debrief with the trainer and collect the dog. With Loyal Canines, we were able to spend time with our dog and go over her progress with the trainer at regular check-points during the bootcamp, which allowed us to not worry about how she was doing when she was far away from us. The trainer Jay was terrific! He is genuinely very patient and dedicated to dog training. He was even reading a book on Chow-Chows to learn more about the breed. Typical of a Chow-Chow, my dog is not fond of strangers. I was surprised to see how Jay quickly managed to work his way to my Chow-Chow's heart. At every meeting, it was clear to us that Jay was spending a lot of time working with our dog to fix the issues that had to be addressed. He also went into great detail training us to handle our dog. At the end of the bootcamp, he even knew our dog's temperament better than we did! Our Chow-Chow is now like a new dog. She is delightful to walk on a leash and listens to commands reliably, including coming when called. She is not aggressive, although if she is ever provoked, we are confident about being able to manage her. We did not think that it was possible to get our Chow-Chow to not be stubborn, but Jay did it! Our relationship with our dog is now vastly improved. What a shame. We were smitten with Loyal Canines at first; big, new facility and a great team of employees...but it has changed a LOT. We pulled our dogs from Loyal Canines last summer and haven't looked back. As time went on, the number of dogs at daycare kept increasing -- I once went in to drop off my dogs and the person at the desk bragged to me that they had OVER 60 DOGS in that day! That seems like an awful lot of dogs in a big, open, echoey warehouse space, and I can't imagine the chaos and crazy energy of that many dogs in a single space. We were told from the start that there would be outdoor space, but I don't believe this has happened which is a bummer. The employee turnover made a big (negative) difference - I had a great relationship with the original group, and the new hires were super unfriendly and unapproachable, and made me feel like I was a bother. They also seem to base their training on eCollars (shock collars - the owner is a distributor for them) and prongs...I hesitantly got on board with the eCollar for a short time, but then when I asked if my dog (who was a yr old and they had trained since he was 16 weeks old) could have some additional training for leash walking, I was told "if he's not walking well on a leash by now, you need to go buy a prong collar." Really?! At that point, I was done. I have also heard from MORE than one person (this didn't happen to me, so not a personal experience) that they have walked in and seen their dog in an eCollar, when no consent was given. NOT cool. At any given time, the person working in with the dogs would have several eCollar remotes hanging around his neck -- it just seemed a bit aggressive in my mind. And I can't imagine that when in charge of that many dogs and collars, they were even being used in "the right" way (the way in which they are "supposed" to be used - very time-specific)? When I made the choice to leave, I contacted many of the people that I had originally referred over to explain my decision and they all thanked me and said they had been having the same feelings. All of them have I believe followed suit and left the facility. Yes, it's a big, slick space and it looks great on paper...but don't believe the hype. read more

I have a 2 year old golden rescue that wasn't really taught much from his previous owners. He was an attention barker, counter surfer, always hounding us for food, jumping on the table while we ate dinner and jumped on people who came in the door. Recently, Milo completed a 2 week boot camp session with Jay and Emily and if I didn't know it was Milo, I would have thought it was another dog. He is doing great, no jumping, counter surfing or begging for food. It's amazing how well he is doing and how quickly he learned. We have been bringing Baxter to LC since we got him as a 5 month old in May 2014. He is a lab/hound mix, and the hound part of his personality is stubborn and very energetic. We brought him here initially because we wanted to socialize him while letting him get out some energy. The days he does not go to day care, he gets about 6 miles of walking (three 2 mile walks), so we bring him here 2-3 times a week to give ourselves a break. We also had him go through about 8 sessions of obedience training when we first got him. Beyond that, we got Baxter 'The Educator E-Collar', to get him to walk off-leash for when we do frequent hikes and trips to Maine/VT. We had the team do 8 sessions with Baxter off-leash, and he is doing VERY well. He sometimes has issues when there are a lot of distractions, but for the most part he is extremely responsive and the training was clearly well-done. Finally, on the occasions we go out of town without him, we are happy (as is Baxter) to send him to LC for boarding. I'm not sure why only 1 review on here is showing, while there are many many positive reviews that are 'filtered'. Jermaine and the staff are very professional and good at what they do. read more

If you read nothing else of this review, there is only one thing I can say to you. Loyal Canines is absolutely the best place to take your dog for training, day care, and boarding. The entire team is just nothing short of amazing, and you feel like you are part of a family from day one. Seriously, look no further. They are the best. Our story: After we lost our very anxious and stubborn rescue Siberian Husky last May, I wanted a very young dog that was easy to train and was a clean slate. Our Sibe had been abused and had terrible health issues, and was miserable outside of the house. On top of that, he was extremely stubborn. We loved him dearly, but he just had a very tough life. He ended up with an extremely aggressive form of lung cancer and we had to say goodbye. I was so miserable that we adopted a pup within a month. Based on what I had wanted with a new dog, we ended up getting a Doberman. My husband had a female Dobe years before we met, and she was an amazing dog. We had Hazel for about two weeks and I knew I was over my head with training such a young pup (she was ten weeks when we got her). I asked my Facebook buds for advice on trainers, and a friend said to go to LC. I made an appointment to meet Jermaine Anderson, the owner, immediately. At the time I did not know that between Jermaine and his team they had 9 Dobermans of their own! I showed up and was walking Hazel to the front door, and at that point, she was terrified of barking dogs. As I was clueless about puppies, I picked her up to pass by the door where dogs were playing. Luckily, Jermaine was standing outside and he told me to put her down and just walk past. He said that picking her up was just reinforcing her fear. See, within seconds of my first visit I already learned something about training a pup! Once inside, Jermaine and I sat down to chat about what I was looking for in training, a brief history of Hazel, and what sorts of things they do. They do an evaluation of dogs before starting out, which made me happy to know. Starting from the first day we took Hazel to LC, we noticed differences in her temperament and disposition. We had her in day care/training twice a week. Our first goal was socialization. Given the fact that they have several staff members and have close to 65 dogs a day, I felt comfortable with that aspect immediately. She progressed quickly, and soon we had a one-on-one training session with one of the team members. I called it a parent/teacher conference, and it was great to learn about what they had taught her and how we should be training her at home. The patience they had with us was amazing. In addition, we had her boarded with them for a week while we were out of town. It was nice to have a vacation that we were not worried about her! Unfortunately, she ended up with pneumonia for a few months, so she was unable to go to LC. Jermaine would occasionally check in and see how she was doing, which was really nice. Once she had a clean bill of health, we took her back and her progress has been incredible. So, if you are still reading, I hope that my review has helped you with your decision. I cannot recommend them more highly. Everyone there is so knowledgeable, helpful, and patient. They answer all the ridiculous questions without any judgment. Basically animal abuse bringing your pet here. My dog did not like other dogs so I brought her in and it was agreed upon that a two week stay at the Peabody MA location was the best option for combating the problem. I received a phone call two days before the scheduled pick up day saying that she had a cold and for me to pick her up early. The cold was the very least issue I've had with the whole situation. My dog was walked out to me half-dead, very emaciated and looking like she hadn't eaten during the whole stay. The large bag of food though was given back to me basically empty. Not sure where it went but it wasn't to my dog. She immediately peed on the carpet (alot) which she hasn't done since she was a puppy when I misjudged potty break timing. Jay the manager showed off her training by doing a whole bunch of finger snaps and hand waves and the dog responded but none of this training was conveyed to me on what the signals and responses should be. We opened the door of the office for my dog to instantly growl at a dog all the way across the room. He said "Oh she still has a problem with that". I then watch a lady receive her dog back to have it jump up on her repeatedly and she says " ...I thought you were working on that". The reply was "Oh she wouldn't do that to us". When I brought my dog home I literally thought she might die. I asked Jay why she was so underweight and he said he didn't notice her weight loss. He thought she was healthy at 20 lbs lighter than the lean dog I brought in. The cold was an easy fix, brought on by stress, malnutrition, and cold weather. Jay had one training day (less than an hour) with me involved where we spent less than 5 mins working on dog aggression which was me walking my dog past another dog twice. His instructions were to use the electric collar when she starts to stare. No mention of positive enforcement. I asked what do I do about the neighbor dog that is growling/barking on the fence every time we go outside that causes a negative impact. He replies "Same thing". He then forces my dog into a carrier with no attempt at positive enforcement to desensitize the experience. We drive to a field and work on off-leash recall for the remainder of the time. He says I should let my dog run off the leash in fields from now on. At this point I still can't trust my dog around stranger dogs so I doubt that would end well if one appeared. He also offered for me to come in for bite work class that would teach her to jump over any obstacle. Like fences. Jay said he's going to have an "investigation" on why my dog wasn't eating. I understand my dog will spill the food in a crate rather than eat it. What I needed was a quick phone call to say upfront my dog is starting to lose weight, what do we do? They could have either waited a minute for her to eat outside of the crate or I could have brought in canned wet food to be thrown in there with her. She would have eaten that. Instead they closed their eyes to the issue, waited till she was almost too weak to move, and told me with a straight face "She looks fine to me". read more

This place is a front, they make you think they're great and really care for the dogs and are great at training, that was not the case for us by any means, our dog went through more harm being there than she would have at home by herself! When we first started sending our dog here it was great we loved it the owner was very nice our dog loved it, my dog is a 10month old vizsla mix, we sent her for doggy day camp and training, it was explained to me that they played all day and were taken out throughout the day for 15 min intervals of training, our dog began training in October, all was well she loved going we were happy with her being there, one Friday night at 6 o'clock I went in to pick her up after work and heard the kid in the back say "clover has been sad all day you should tell her owner she didn't really play today" which is very unlike my dog, so clover comes out and her eye is swollen shut and bleeding inside, I'm a nurse so I was worried about what was going on inside her eye especially with the bleeding, my dog was there since 830 am and no one even called me, also we are paying for her to be training throughout the day so clearly She wasn't training that day because you could see her from a mile away it looked like she only had one eye, it's now 6pm ons Friday night so our only option was to take her to Woburn animal ER, we were there all night long, luckily clover was okay she got some pain meds antibiotics and we were on our way, I do believe that it was harmless how the trauma to the eye happened however the care was obviously not good if she went all day like this and no one saw it, but I understand things happen so after a talk with the owner who agreed to credit us $300 in her day camp and training we sent her back, every time we went to bring her in she cried and wouldn't get out of the car, to the point that she was shaking anytime she entered the building, it was now time for us to meet the trainer for him to show us what he had done with clover, my fiancé went in just a few weeks ago and the trainer tells us that he has not been able to train her ONE thing, he said he didn't have the rewards that she liked so she wouldn't work with him, again I understand some dogs don't learn quickly but this should have been communicated, I constantly asked how the training was and they kept telling me she was doing great! Also come to find out when dogs train they do not play all day like I was told, they do a training camp where they walk on treadmills, and go in the cage, also they training they do is with a pressure collar so they pretty much force the dog to follow the commands with the pressure collar. If you care about your dog don't send them here! I called the owner of course being frustrated that we paid for months for our dog to be trained and he clearly had nothing to say he just kept telling me that my dog made progress and some dogs take a long time to learn, which is understandable but had they told me she didn't like their treats I could have brought in ones she liked, this was a waste of time and money for us. read more

My dog, Toby, and I had failed with multiple trainers over the one year period that I've had him. When I went for my consultation session with Jay, one of the trainers at Loyal Canines, I had no idea what else to do for Toby. If this didn't work, I would probably have had to give him up. After describing Toby's behavior (and after Toby tried to eat Jay as soon as he walked into the room), he summed up pretty quickly that I was basically a prisoner in my condo. He was the first trainer I've worked with who really understood just how tough Toby was, and promised that he would show me how to be able to control Toby's behaviors. I enrolled Toby in the 3 week boot camp, and it was the best decision I could've made for him. LC has you go in once a week to review progress and so that the trainer can train you as well. My first day back, I was shocked at how well Toby was doing. He was around other dogs and other people, not lunging, not barking, not trying to bite. Jay even showed me how he did walking without a leash, which was something I never even imagined Toby ever being able to do. The next week, we took Toby on a walk around the neighborhood off-leash. Again, it was crazy to see him behaving and responding appropriately to cues. Since bringing him home, I can say that everybody who knew him before has said that he's so much better behaved. I've been able to have people over, take him to the park, and even do some off-leash walking with him. He also used to have a lot of neurotic tendoncies- running in circles, pacing, chewing his leash- but now they've ceased. He's just a much calmer, more mellow, and more secure dog,and I feel much more confident and at ease when walking him as well. I send Toby to daycare at LC as well so he continues to get socialization with other dogs and people. He's also exhausted at the end of the day, which is a huge plus! I actually have to wake him up each morning, instead of the other way around. Jay and Jermaine have also been great in answering any questions about Toby that I've had since his boot camp ended. I'm really surprised to read a negative review, especially regarding the use of E-Collars and prong collars. Initially, I'll admit that I was hesitant to try these with Toby (he's a small dog), but after Jay provided education on them, I can say that they're actually a very humane way to get results and the trainers are not aggressively using them. Toby has had multiple medical issues in the past (FHA surgery, for one), and if there was even an instance of thinking he was being harmed, I would have taken him out right away. And 60 dogs does seem like a lot, however the dogs are divided by size and therefore not all in the same space. Overall, I'm so glad that Toby and I were referred here and would 100% recommend it to anybody who needs a place to send their dog during the day or training. Loyal Canines has been fantastic, truly one of the best. We spent a large amount of time researching all the options for doggie daycare around Beverly & Salem. We've now used Loyal Canines for both daycare and doggie training, both programs are top notch! Our pups wouldn't even want to come home, rather stay and play more :) Our doggo #1, Rally, enjoyed his daycare so much, he gets excited every time we drive by. Doggo #2, Dotty experienced the boot camp, she went through an amazing transformation. We got back a different dog, this crazy creature learnt how to be obedient while having fun. We only had wonderful experience with Jermaine and his team, they are doing a great job! We tried to manage our new rescue puppy on our own, but he was bored. We got a recommendation for Loyal Canines Academy and have been using them for almost a year. We had him trained there and attend daycare. The first day he came home from daycare exhausted we knew this was the place for him. I've been taking my dog Indy to daycare here for over a year. She gets so excited in the morning when I say she is going to play with her friends! She always comes home exhausted, a sure sign she had a fun day. This place seriously has it all. She had her obedience training here, she gets groomed here, and I've also boarded her here when I had to go away. I felt 100% comfortable leaving her there for a few days. I also want to mention that my girl is shy around people she doesn't know, and is even sometimes afraid of people she's met countless times. I have never once seen her afraid of any of the workers at Loyal Canines. In fact the most confident I ever see her is at daycare! I know that if she was afraid of anyone there I wouldn't be able to get her through the front door. This makes me feel so confident that I am leaving her in capable hands. DO NOT BRING YOUR PET HERE- Went for an interview/first day and was HORRIFIED at how the dogs were treated. The "bad dogs" we're left crated until the end of the day where they were then put on TREADMILLS for 1-2 hours without water or any breaks at all. Just wasted 30 minutes (20 of which I was sitting alone in an office with my dog) for them to tell me "she's great and will get along well with the other dogs in daycare". Then was charged $30 for an "evaluation". No one said anything about a charge for being evaluated when I called for information prior to going, let alone $30 for the 5 minutes (if that) that my dog was actually away from me. Every other daycare she has been to "evaluates" for free (she's five years old and has been going to daycare since she was a puppy) I should have read the reviews before coming...would recommend researching other daycares in the area. read more

I have a pitbull puppy that has been training with the Loyal Canines staff for 3 months. I cannot even begin to describe the changes. In the beginning, she was quite the challenge. She would jump all over you, chew you to pieces and never listened. I equated some of the bad behavior to her being a rescue that was in several homes in her short 3 month life. All I can say is, it is like she is a different dog! She is so well-behaved and loves to spend time learning at the facility or just hanging out with us being a snuggle bug. I popped into Loyal Canines to ask some questions and to view the facility. I get there, and no one was at the desk. I waited a bit, and a girl then came from the back. Didn't greet me, so I told her I had a few questions. She seemed unapproachable and not too friendly, I felt like she didn't want to deal with me at all. She said she had to go get someone else, because I had questions about training. She walked out the front door, of the facility, to go next door. Leaving the dogs behind the glass, unattended. This really rubbed be the wrong way. The trainer came and spoke to me. I peered through the tinted glass and saw a large dog, maybe a German Shepard, in the far left corner on a treadmill. Unsupervised, and looking extremely fatigued. I was shocked at that for sure, yet what topped it all of is that there was a shock collar on a dog amongst other dogs. That's a method that I do not agree with whatsoever. Especially in a daycare setting? Seems very wrong. The trainer didn't really seem too educated, he kept talking in circles. He told me that prong, e-collars, and chokers are POSITIVE reinforcement. Seriously? Last time I checked pain was never positive. I asked a few more questions and got out of there. I feel like there's more going on that if the owners knew about, they wouldn't be happy about at all. I would not leave my dog here for daycare or training, I will never use their services. read more

So saddened by this place. I boarded my 4 year old Bulldog here a little while ago and will never step foot in that place again. It was the first time I had ever boarded him (as he always has someone come take care of him) and I made that clear to the staff I spoke with. They reassured me everything would be fine and not to send him there with anything from home except food. I thought that was odd but ok! I walked in and was immediately hit with the most wretched smell that they try and cover up with candles. Smelled like urine/feces/and Yankee Candle. I bring in the food and the measuring scoop I use at home to make things easy. When I filled out the paperwork, I explained that he eats 1 scoop 2 times a day and that was the exact amount I brought for his 3 day stay. The owner was there and he was super nice (hence the 2 stars) but the woman who came out from the back was awful. No eye contact, didn't speak to me, and barely acknowledged my dog aside from grabbing his leash and telling me I could leave. From the office area, you can't even see into the dog area whIch I thought was odd too. I reluctantly left, cried and tried to enjoy 3 days away. When I came to pick him up, not a soul was in the office and all I could hear was someone playing basketball out back. Because you can't see into the dog area and nobody could hear me saying hello, I sat for a good 15 minuets before this KID walks out and just kind of stared at me. I said I was there to pick up my dog and off he scurried. When he brought our dog out, he was shaking, covered in urine and had so much of his food left which should've been gone! The kid had nothing to say and just walked away from me. My dog drank so much water when we got home and needed to be groomed immediately to get the urine and feces off him. I would never suggest bringing anything living to this facility. Awful. read more

Jermaine and his staff are exceptional. My german shephard Leo had been to a few doggy daycares and no one took care of him the way that Loyal Canines did. My dog suffered from every type of anxiety there is and Loyal Canines was the only place I trusted. Jermaine and his staff were more than patient with my special guy and they really helped him and myself. I could bring him there everyday and know he was well taken care of and that the staff genuinely cared about each and every dog there. They are a great facility for daycare, boarding, training and even grooming. I highly recommend them! read more

My dog did great for the first couple of months - during these months I got to know the staff and each day disappointed me, other than Leslie - she is amazing. My dog loved going to school but the staff is extremely unprofessional and not polished in "customer service." The turnover rate is high and it shows. I will never recommend this place, nor bring my dog back there. If you give you respect, you should get respect in return. I was treated like a second class citizen recently and was promised by the owner that this would never happen again. Two weeks later, I got the same disrespect. This is not the way you run a business. What would make me want to refer someone to a facility like this? Weeks ago I was told that there was a dog fight and my dog tried to defend the dog who was getting picked on. Weeks later, I was told MY dog was the cause of the fight and he had been left outside of the group (basically left by himself and not socializing with the others) - I only found this out by accident. I can leave my dog at home for free if he is going to be left by himself.. If there is a problem, I should hope that I would be told about it. Never was I told until two weeks later - I am sorry. This daycare is a waste of money. I only hope others know what type of facility this is. Do your homework. read more

An amazing trainer Jay !!!! We have 1.6 y old rescue lab mix Noble who was giving us many behavioral problems to the point we where worried about him possibly biting someone. We where desperately searching an internet for trainers. When i called Loyal Canines , Jay told me to come for evaluation which we did the same day. Noble was scared of people and dogs , showing aggression at the same time. We couldn't take him to the vet, since he was labeled as an aggressive dog and didn't let them touch any of his body parts, trying to bite everyone. Noble was placed into boot camp 3 weeks program with Jay. We received back a totally different dog, what a transformation !!! He is walking on the leash nicely, doesn't attempt to jump on people. He is totally well behaved sweetheart dog, no problems with grooming or vet appt., and he is running on a trade meal for exercise. Thank you Jay and stuff for giving us new happy life !!! read more

I have brought my dog here for daycare since she was a puppy. 1.5 years. Jermaine and his staff are amazing. I was shocked to read the review on the boarding. I know with my dog if she hasn't been to day care in a while she is nervous about going back. It can be overwhelming for some dogs and a high stress environment. All of the staff members have taken the time to re-introduce her to the environment until she is comfortable. When I pick her up she is tired and very happy. Nothing like the other woman experienced, except for the urine smell. Being a high energy dog she is constantly playing and rolling around with the other dogs. After speaking with many people they say this is very common with highly active dogs in a day care environment.One thing I know about my dog is she is the QUEEN BEE at my house with hardly any restrictions. If I dropped her off for a boarding situation where she now had to sleep in a new place, in a kennel, without us, and around strange dogs I am sure she wouldn't be happy, she probably wouldn't eat, definitely nervous around new people, and exhausted when I got her home. There is always 2 sides to the story and I have had nothing but very positive experiences at Loyal Canine. I also have friends who leave their dog over night and have full trust in Jermaine and his staff. The trainers are beyond amazing and have helped us correct some pretty bad behaviors. read more
