Knaypa means 'pub' in Polish, but while this newcomer's dark wood basement may look pubby, the…read moreground floor is a much more polished affair of red leather chairs, smoky mirrors and black tables. In keeping with the style of this lower section the food is served in time-honoured fashion on hand carved lime wooden platters adding a touch of authenticity to the whole affair. The food is predominantly polish but there are some under tones of other Eastern European cuisines. The dishes are served in that posh like manner that you can experience in fine dining, but they don't cost an arm for a leg, on the contrary. For instance, the Kulebiak is spinach, tomato & cheese wrapped in French pastry served with tomato sauce (£4.50), only two per portion but they are lovely. As a main I had the Confit Duck Leg on buttered cabbage served with roast potatoes in tomato sauce (£10.50) and I have no words, tender, warm and very yummy! To be honest I can't wait to come back! To give them the 5th star!

The sour soup starter which came in a bread bowl was amazing. It has kielbasa sausage and hard boiled egg and had such good flavors. The pierogies were fried which was a disappointment (and shock to my Polish friends). They were supposed to be assorted, but for some reason I got all the meat ones on my plate. They recommended a Maldovian wine which was undrinkable and the service was spotty at best. Go for the soup and beyond that proceed at your own risk....

I've been there about 5 times and always had the porogi (spelling sorry!) which are little dumplings along with the 'hunters dish' which is a mixture of cabbage and polish sausage. I must admit these are things I would never even think of eating (never ate cabbage before going to the spitfire and wont eat it anywhere else!) There are both entree's and mains on the menu, but we love having lots of the starters (they bring them out on large platters with vegetables on the side) and sharing a few vodka's & apple juice. The lady who runs the place is soo lovely, she always helps us with our Polish pronunciation and makes you feel very special. The only problem is that it's not open on Monday nights oh, and they only take cash so be prepared! Enjoy, I'd eat this every night if I could.

This restaurant serves EXCELLENT home cooked Polish fare. It is unbelievably cheap for London and…read moreis true value for money. It was opened by a Polish gentleman who was the pilot of a spitfire in WW2. For this reason the place is plastered in awards, photos of spitfires and all sorts of other war memorabilia. The décor is rather dated but in a way that adds to the charm of this wonderful restaurant. The owner is a charming Polish lady who took over the place several years ago. She is very helpful and always has a smile on her face. I had the polish pierogi which are a kind of ravioli which were very tasty and my dad had home made sausage with cabbage which was also delicious. We shared a started of soup and both had a drink and coffee and the total came to £20. Bargain! Definitely recommended.

Everything about this restaurant is pure excellence!…read more My wife used to do a lot of work with two of the local theaters in Northampton. One of them, Royal & Derngate, is just a five minute walk from Chata, so this was a regular stop for us for a meal out before or after one of her shows, or if we popped down to see one of the many great acts passing through town. I can't imagine a better restaurant in Northampton. First, the service. We were always waited on by the owner, who was always up for a great chat. An immensely friendly, welcoming, and attentive man. Second, the food! The pork shank is unreal, absolutely spectacular, and my wife always enjoyed the pierogies. The sausage appetizer with mustard is also excellent. For drinks, they offer three or four different Polish beers, of which the owner will share his candid opinions and recommend one to suit your tastes. There's also wine, and Guinness, if I recall correctly, but stick with the beer. I highly recommend the Zwiec for a super drinkable lager with better flavor depth than the others. Having been to many restaurants and pubs in Northampton, this is by far my favorite for its incredible service and food. This place is, simply put, homely, and you can't do any better than home.

I believe our waiter was also the owner, and he was incredibly inviting and welcoming. We ordered two platters for four of us, and we all got the beet root soup to start. We wanted to sample a little of everything, so the platters were the way to go. The food was incredible. Beef rolls that melted in your mouth, pork shanks that were worth the wait (about 20 or 25 minutes), onion pierogies, polish sausage, pork loin- every bite was just amazing. I couldn't believe that my family ate every bite- it was an enormous amount of food. Authentic, prepared with love and care. We also had a 10 month old baby with us, and she agreed that the food was delicious, as she couldn't get enough of sampling the menu either. They have an awesome high chair too that looked like it could be found in a ski lodge in the Swiss alps- rustic, sturdy, and very comfortable. The service was so friendly and helpful with offering suggestions, and even other guests in the small restaurant were friendly and willing to start up a conversation.
