Chata - Beef sausage and empty fried dumpling

Chata

Everything about this restaurant is pure excellence!…read more My wife used to do a lot of work with two of the local theaters in Northampton. One of them, Royal & Derngate, is just a five minute walk from Chata, so this was a regular stop for us for a meal out before or after one of her shows, or if we popped down to see one of the many great acts passing through town. I can't imagine a better restaurant in Northampton. First, the service. We were always waited on by the owner, who was always up for a great chat. An immensely friendly, welcoming, and attentive man. Second, the food! The pork shank is unreal, absolutely spectacular, and my wife always enjoyed the pierogies. The sausage appetizer with mustard is also excellent. For drinks, they offer three or four different Polish beers, of which the owner will share his candid opinions and recommend one to suit your tastes. There's also wine, and Guinness, if I recall correctly, but stick with the beer. I highly recommend the Zwiec for a super drinkable lager with better flavor depth than the others. Having been to many restaurants and pubs in Northampton, this is by far my favorite for its incredible service and food. This place is, simply put, homely, and you can't do any better than home.

This was a highlight of our trip to the UK. We almost gave up on it when our gps made navigating…read morethe one way streets all but impossible, but I'm so glad we persevered. I believe our waiter was also the owner, and he was incredibly inviting and welcoming. We ordered two platters for four of us, and we all got the beet root soup to start. We wanted to sample a little of everything, so the platters were the way to go. The food was incredible. Beef rolls that melted in your mouth, pork shanks that were worth the wait (about 20 or 25 minutes), onion pierogies, polish sausage, pork loin- every bite was just amazing. I couldn't believe that my family ate every bite- it was an enormous amount of food. Authentic, prepared with love and care. We also had a 10 month old baby with us, and she agreed that the food was delicious, as she couldn't get enough of sampling the menu either. They have an awesome high chair too that looked like it could be found in a ski lodge in the Swiss alps- rustic, sturdy, and very comfortable. The service was so friendly and helpful with offering suggestions, and even other guests in the small restaurant were friendly and willing to start up a conversation.

The other reviews don't lie: this is your one-way ticket to stodgeville…read more Not that I'm not on board with that - I assure you, I am. Just, ideally, you'll head here when absolutely ravenous. The interior is decked out rather like a winter log cabin. Sheepskin, draped over each chair and cute, cosy wooden tables with white embroidered placemats. The waiting staff wear matching embroidered shirts. It reminded me of the alps/Oktoberfest. We wanted to try as much as we could fit in, so instead of mains, we ordered a selection of starters including a soup each. While the presentation was superb, I found the actual food too salty. Highlights were beetroot soup with mushroom-filled rolls in the side. And the cabbage dumplings. I wanted to give Karczma more stars but the food just didn't blow me away. I can imagine this is a fun place to bring a group in the evening, though - allowing the opportunity to tear into some hefty sharing options. And knock back a few vodkas. I'd like to come back and try the mains, perhaps the real stars of the Polish culinary show.

A fun experience. I've visited three times now and always had a good time…read more The Karczma is in the Polish millenial centre but has its own entrance. You can find it by turning left under the bridge behind Moor St station and then taking the second road on the right. Inside you will find a cosy restaurant with a straw ceiling, wooden tables with crochet tablecloths and other traditional polish decorations. It's quite cheesy but effective. Food is hearty and trsditional, probably not much for vegetarians. We had a sharing trough for 6-8 people last time so I've tried a great deal now. The dumplings are delicious, as is the stuffed chicken. Sides of sourkraut, beetroot and potato are super too. It isn't refined cooking but it is good, hearty and fun. They have a great vodka selection too. The mint and lime is lovely to sip neat. They also have mead and polish beer. Service is warm and helpful. I visited in a group of 13 last week and they were wonderful, even giving a free drink to the birthday girl. A great experience!
