Ok we went out of our way to come here based on reviews. Normally I don't write a negative review. However I want others who may be planning this trip to be aware. We are a group of foodies who all work in the industry. It's true you can tell the owner has had classic food training. It's evident in the presentation and in some of the taste. The drive is awesome and it's a quaint setting as far as the restaurant goes. Our sever was top notch. Her depth of knowledge when it came to their menu items. The food however, that's where things took a turn. Four completely different meals. Of the four maybe the best was the chef salad. The rib eye was disappointing with something like a horseradish pizza glaze on it that was suppose to be a horseradish sauce. Served over mashed potatoes which was not what the menu described when it said served with oven roasted potatoes. As we were leaving an older couple came in and sat. They looked at the menu and after ordering their drinks but before their drinks were made they told the waitress to cancel their drink order. They left without ordering to drive to Jasper to eat. Wish we had done the same Not a place I would visit again and just making sure if you were headed out here you know. The drive is with it. The food not so much. read more

I've been coming here for about five years. If you are floating the Buffalo it's convenient. The chef and owner is a culinary rock star. He always comes out to say hi to all the customers, too. The place doesn't look like it on the outside but the food is better than most five star restaurants. FYI get there at 5ish- the wait can sometimes be over an hour because it's tiny inside. The live music on the patio is also cool. The chicken carbonara is what I usually order and it's worth it to order dessert if you're a foodie like me! read more

Tried to go on Friday night as a party of 1, arrived at 7:45. Stood inside for a few minutes and an older gentleman came over and told me they closed at 8 in a gruff tone. I was surprised because the internet says they close at 9 pm. and even if that's not the case I still arrived before the time he started. I asked if I could get something to go and was told the kitchen was backed up and he didn't think so in the same gruff tone. Left irritated at the treatment but then considered perhaps I wasn't dressed appropriately as I had been fishing and the place is a bit fancier than expected for a place in the middle of nowhere. Saturday night rolls around and I put on a collared shirt and arrived even earlier and was told by the same guy they were closed, well before 8. I pointed out he had told me 8 the night before and he had some line about winter hours and closing at 7. Told him this was the second time I was trying to eat there and asked if I could get something to go. He acted irritated and turned around and asked the chef who said yes. I ordered a chicken and pasta dish. He ran my card before placing the order and then told me if I waited outside he'd bring it to me. Restaurant had 4 tables open and I'm asked to wait outside. Meal was $20 and some change, cooked well but nothing special. It's on par with the Ozark Cafe in Jasper where I'll go from now on thanks to the worst I've ever been treated in a restaurant. A hidden gem in Newton County. You won't find this place by accident, unless you happen to be floating the nearby Buffalo River at Steel Creek access. But it is a pilgrimage well worth your time. I'll be honest, from the outside, it doesn't look impressive. We're talking dive here. But when you step through the front door, your first clue that something special is up is the ginormous commercial cookstove and kitchen theatre open to the dining area. Atmosphere is very much country diner. Locals and families in from a day spent on the river chow down on burgers and simple fair as your server dressed in tie-dyed t-shirt leads you to a formica top table. Then ... you open the menu and get your second clue that you're in for something special. We rolled in late in the afternoon. One dish was worth the whole drive ....Lobster Ravioli .... Oh Em Goodness!!! Then tomato basil cream soup with cheddar garlic biscuits and honey butter ....Husband had prime rib, and I had ribeye with horseradish cream sauce. We finished with Marscerpone cream cake and strawberry rhubarb pie .... all scratch made. Chef is classically trained and worked in the big city before returning home to Newton County. Absolutely scrumptious! I had the Ahi Tuna with spicy pineapple sauce and rice (pictured) my husband had the seafood pasta with cream sauce, my daughter had a bacon cheeseburger with fries. We also had an appetizer of catfish bits, as well as the mascarpone cake. All of it was top notch. It is pricy, but totally worth it. Hubby and I also had salads and cheesy biscuits before our entrees arrived. I had a house made mandarin orange vinaigrette on my salad and hubby had ranch. Yum, yum, and yum! Hubby and I stopped for lunch on recommendation by a friend. Honestly I don't think we would have stopped here if we had happened upon it, but so glad for the recommendation. Service was excellent and staff works super hard for their clientele at this small cafe. We witnessed an irate customer being very disrespectful to the staff (they were not at fault), and he ended up walking out - unbelievable. His family remained, and the staff treated them with the utmost respect. Anyway hubby ordered the Monte Cristo, and I ordered the bourbon chicken crepe. Both were exceptionally yummy. What a treat after seeing the elk in Boxley Valley off Hwy 74. We were hungry after the excitement of viewing such beautiful creatures thriving in northern Arkansas. We were driving back to the cabin and saw Low Gap Cafe kind of the middle of nowhere. It was a surprise once entering the cafe and seeing the menu that looked like a menu from Dallas. If I could give a 4 1/2 I would. Only problem here was seating... we were right next to doir - that opened a s closed every couple minutes. But the service was great and the food was amazing. I had the salad and Chicken Marsala- yummy! My husband had the Fiery Tomato soup , cheese biscuits and the Chicken with vodka sauce- it was amazing too. I tried his soup and wish I had gotten that! Only bummer is ...they serve Pepsi products. We took home a coconut cream pie and a chocolate cream pie... both were delicious. All around amazing! 5 star food for the price of the food. your money goes a long way here. Large portions of quality food, cooked professionally. Staff work tirelessly to make your wait shorter. And environment is very much relaxed with the added bonus of being allowed to BOB. They do not serve any alcohol but brining and placing in your own or provided cup is allowed here . Five scallops for over 35.00, crazy. My friends had the filet and it was just like the tuna. It was seared on the outside and pink in the middle no hint of lighter fluid, like daddy's sirloin. The banana pudding tasted really bananas and I almost went when I combined with key lime pie. I could have been REALLY embarrassed. The owner wouldn't leave our table unless he knew we were happy and the waitress wouldn't stop making sure we were satisfied. I can't imagine going back unless I make plans in 8 weeks with my wife so she can see what I went through. Nobody should eat here in June because I might have to wait over an hour to come. But seriously it is ok..if you enjoy good food, great people and you can tell the difference between cardboard frozen food and fresh from the sea or farm ingredients....otherwise don't waste my time because I'm gonna be hungry again and don't want to wait on you for my next table. The two stars are to express that despite his culinary training, the food does not rise to the level of extraordinary. Meat tasted unseasoned before cooking. We asked if the kitchen had run out of gas. At that point, we had been there about 1 hour and were starving. They informed us that the entire kitchen was on break! Never in my 40 years had anything like this happened to me at any restaurant. We decided to leave and were told this was normal. In my opinion, this was completely unacceptable! At no point, were we told that we would have to wait for the rest of our food because the entire kitchen was going on break during service hours. On our recent trip to the Ozark mountains the choices were kinda limited; this place was recommended to us by some locals. It's definitely not a place you go for the ambiance, which if you were expecting to be part of the attraction you're probably confused. The food here is the attraction, and it's done well. They have lunch specials and a dinner menu. For lunch we had the habanero cheeseburger with mushrooms. It was really good, and not just cuz we were starving.
