I love this place. Great food and friendly service. Reasonable prices. Lots of seating. I eat here regularly by myself and there's a screen with interesting nature images or manga etc playing which keeps me amused when I'm enjoying my meal. Nice music playing. Comfortable vibe. Definitely a good place for your birthday dinner or a meal with a special friend.

Mushroom stir fry with tofu and brown rice. Yummy ginger tonic. Awesome

Left, walked a few blocks and nothing else stood out from the Calzone with Banana, Nutella and Walnut that we saw on the menu so we came back and were warmly welcomed. Ordered it and was shocked at the huge monstrosity that was delivered to our table. Perfectly chewy and thinly crisp outside with a warm, gooey filling that oozed out as I cut threw the crust. The perfect bite with a dollop of vanilla ice cream to cool down and add some mellowness to the sweet goodness. The only letdown was the ice cream, wasn't bad but just wasn't amazing which is why I'm giving it 4 stars. However the staff made it such a pleasant and warm experience, always the cherry on top!

The menu changes daily. I had their bread with fresh beetroot and eggplant dips. Nutrition galore. The Japanese bowl with fresh pickled ginger, delicious roast pieces of pumpkin, some mushrooms atop some flavoured Japanese rice was very filling and again nutritious Their slightly warm passionfruit chia seed pudding was a good finish to the meal. Their apple cake tasted exactly like my favourite dessert ever - sticky date. But super healthy! They have live music on sundays! Great for groups. Outside seating available Lots of parking nearby

While not a purely vegetarian / vegan cafe, Ruckers Hill do have options on the menu that they can 'veganise' to your heart's content (they give you little vegan hints on the menu, which I always find helpful!), so well worth the visit if you are not carnivorously inclined. Ruckers Hill has quite a charming and friendly feel to it, reflected in the ethos of the attentive staff, who were all over the task of keeping our glasses filled with fruit infused water during our visit. For my brunch, I ordered the Quinoa and Buckwheat Pancakes that were an interesting mix of sweet (fruit) and savoury (tahini and sprouts), just because it sounded so interesting, and it was, but I don't think I would order it again (my brain found the fusion of sweet and savoury too confusing, but both it and my palate are a little simple, so don't let me turn you off trying this dish). My brunch buddy ordered a brilliant looking French Toast, which matched in the taste stakes from all reports. Both dishes were beautifully presented, and served reasonably quickly. Hot beverages at our table included soy coffee and a pot of peppermint loose leaf tea, a perfect accompaniment to our lazy brunch. While there are a range of interesting cafes and restaurants competing for our attention in the High Street strip in Northcote, I will definitely be revisiting Rucker's Hill Cafe to sample some of the other vegan options on offer.

It can be hard to find exactly what you need if you are after something specific, as the shop is not laid out in a methodical manner, but for me this makes the shopping experience all the more enjoyable. Sometimes I think the staff at the Fruit Pedallers must think I'm a little fruity myself, when I spend hours browsing the shop only to come up to the counter with a bottle of milk and a cucumber, for example. Up until recently their fresh fruit and veg have been very very expensive. But with a recent change to their buying strategy, they have dropped prices significantly. Yay! Now we can all eat more organic food. Who knows I may even come up to the counter with a cucumber and a head of brocolli. They also have naturopaths on staff - where you can get some free advice (as long as you buy their awful tasting herbal mixtures of course) on your lingering cold etc.
