Rough River Dam State Resort Park - Water view by lodge

Rough River Dam State Resort Park

I don't like writing reviews like this one, but I told a desk person, who asked how our stay was, I…read morewould write a review to state how my wife and I viewed our stay at the "Resort." Upon arriving, we were 30 minutes early, Central Time, so we didn't get to check in yet, though I think we still got checked in prior to 4pm. That was fine. We came from Eastern Time Zone, Sunnyside of Louisville. I had requested a view of lake when I made reservations. A view of the marina was the best they could do, I guess. Upon entering our smoke free room, I found an ashtray full of butts and a lighter on our balcony. I get the rooms are smoke free and perhaps balcony can be utilized for smoking, but why leave butts and lighter on balcony? I called the front desk regarding this and they said they would address it. I then found a credit card, gift card and a pill in one of the drawers. I gave those items to the young lady I met earlier at the front desk. My wife asked her where we could get ice and she said she didn't know. Back to that later. We ate dinner prior to arriving at the "Resort" since we had time to kill. We ate at Little Dave's which was fine. See my review on that establishment. The pool was open when we arrived but closed not long after. We drove around the "Resort" park and found the beach was closed with No Swimming signs posted. Hmm. There is a trend started here. Wifey and I like playing mini golf and sometimes disk golf when we visit State parks. It was quite hot during our stay so we went to play a relaxed game of mini golf our first night just after sunset. We could see during the first half of the course and saw a maintenance person drive up, get out of the cart and appear to go to a power box of some sort on the opposite side of the course we were at. Wifey asked me to ask him if he could put the lights on, but I didn't feel like yelling to him and told my wife he saw us and would surely put lights on if they worked. Nope. Wrong answer. We played the second half of game in the dark. The following day we learned the pool was closed for maintenance. The trend continues. We decided to get out of dodge and the "Resort" to find something to do. Apparently, there used to be a Nature Center on the "Resort," but no longer. No pool, no beach and the mini golf course needed cleanup from debris on it. I stopped by the front desk, told the young lady where guests could find ice and her mature co-worker agreed with my comment. I then asked if the mini golf course lights were inoperable. I was told they should work. I said we would play later on when we returned from a day out of the "Resort," if the lights were on. We visited Leitchfield and had a fair day shopping and dining at Bluegrass BBQ. You can read that review also. We didn't care to try the restaurant on the "Resort" since everything was trending negative, plus the Park's restaurant was voted last for dining in the area. Go figure. When we arrived back from our trip to Leitchfield, we saw the lights were already on, though it was still light out. I thought perhaps the trend is getting better, but wait for it. When we went to golf, my wife said it looks like they cut the grass around the mini golf course. She was correct. It was clear they cut the grass, because the grass was blown all over the debris that was still present from the day before. That course could be nice with a little TLC. I thought to ask the front desk for a blower to help out the maintenance people, but didn't. I figured the answer would be no. I had been told a work order needed to go in to get the lights on at the mini golf course. I'd like to say the AC worked fine in the room. The flashing lights also worked in the room all night. You may want to bring dark blinders when it is time to sleep. My wife said the flashing lights were like fireworks going off all night. If you are a tall person, be prepared to hunch down to get under the shower head and bend way over to use the sink. Who decides where to install things at this "Resort?" Our last item to mention before ending this review is on our way back from the mini golf course, the light for the walkway between parking lot and our room was out. My wife said, "It is aweful dark on this walkway." I told her the LED light on top of the pole is out. Perhaps they need some more maintenance people or a new supervisor. I wasn't even looking for things at this "Resort," but they stuck out like sore thumbs. My wife and I have visited every Indiana State Park with lodging and several Kentucky State Parks with lodging. This one is hands-down the worst. Calling it a "Resort," is laughable. I think if I came to go boating, it may be a bit of a different perspective, but I feel a little reluctant to rent a boat at the State Park due to the trend it displays. Hopefully, the Park superintendent, or whatever they are called, can address these issues so future visitors have a better stay.

Does two years with a third booked make this a tradition? It will become one if this auntie has…read moreanything to say about that! We LOVE Lake Rudolph! It's just about a 3 hour drive south in none other than Santa Claus, Indiana! Did you even know there was such a place? Don't blink or you may miss it! You must visit the post office which is directly across the street from the campground. They have the biggest ornament shop that ever existed and info on how to write a letter to Santa! So cute. Oh...is that a squirrel? I love to digress... We've gone to Lake Rudolph for the Halloween weekends and they are truly magical! The campground goes allllll out! Cabin, RV, and tent sites decorate and people get SUPER into it their set ups. There is a golf cart parade, a whole carnival of games, a dance party, evening hay rides, and even trick or treating throughout the campground! Add in a visit to Holiday World and you have a trip you want to come back to. We didn't have one the first year but quickly learned golf carts are a must because the campground is big! Those 4 wheels mean more time to explore and candy collect! We felt proud of our carts this year! They definitely made updates between 2022 and 2023. We noticed! The cabins have nicer couches, sheets are nice and clean, everything is well stocked and feels a bit more modern than a simple cabin. I'm already counting down to 2024!

Great campground. We stayed in a 7 person cabin. Very clean really nice cabin with 2 queens, a…read morebunk bed, and a pullout couch. Pool was perfect. $10 water slide passes were fun for the kids. Lots of pavement for the kids to ride their bikes. Bring your e-bikes and scootersif you have them cause there's a lot of hills. The shuttle to Holiday world is very convenient. They rent golf carts but we didn't do it this time but next time probably will.

This is a small motel located near the tiny town of Leavenworth, IN off of I-64 (exit 92). I've…read moreused this place as an overnight stop for the past 10+ years while traveling out to Missouri to visit family. This used to be a Days Inn up until about 8 years ago when it became an independent motel. I always enjoy stopping here since it is conveniently located next to the interstate and there is a Pilot Travel Center across the road (along with a few dining options surrounding the motel). This might not be an good stop for families, but should fit the bill nicely for solo travelers. The building itself is very small and somewhat outdated with only about 40 rooms at most, but the current owners of the building have been working on making renovations. On my visit last summer, I was relieved to see that they finally removed the old and bulky TV cabinets (which looked like they were from the 1980's) and replaced them with small flat-screen TVs. The TV offerings are limited to mainly a few local channels from Louisville with a few others thrown it. But I seldom watch TV during my overnight stops except for news and weather so this was a non-issue for me. The rooms (at least the ones I've stayed in) have double beds, but at least they are comfortable and provide a good night's sleep. The rooms (along with the bathrooms) have always been very clean during the times I have been there. There is also free wi-fi which has always worked great for me. As for the dining options I mentioned...there is the Pilot across the road which is open 24 hours and has a Subway inside. Next to the Pilot is the Country Style Restaurant (which is only open 7am-9pm but has pretty decent food at a reasonable price). Also next to the motel is Big Dadd's Pub & Restaurant, which has typical pub food but also serves cold beer and liquor. The motel itself has a small restaurant downstairs, but on my last visit it was only open for limited hours and didn't offer breakfast. There is also an upstairs lounge which is also only open for limited hours. During my stays, I have always gotten a downstairs room facing westward toward the road. The downstairs rooms facing eastward open to a large parking area where truck drivers usually park their rigs for overnight stays. All of the downstairs rooms actually have doors that open to the outside, but the ones upstairs open to a hallway. This works out well since for me since I can park my car just outside my door and can also enjoy a nice view of the sunset. As for smoking, Indiana apparently has a law that prohibits smoking in motels as well as near their entrances. But Big Dadd's next door has an outdoor section where smoking is allowed. The older lady who runs the motel has always been very friendly with me during check-in and I have never had any issues with billing or odd charges showing up on my credit card statement. As I mentioned before, this place would most likely not be suitable for a family stay (you'd be better off 13 miles eastward in Corydon for that). But it would work great for single travelers who aren't expecting much. The rates might be somewhat high for a small place like this, but since the owners are trying to spruce this place up I think it's worth it. Plus it would be more cheaper than getting a hotel closer to Holiday World. In fact, those would be the closest hotels once you pass this exit if you are going westward. I hate to think that this place might not see a whole lot of business since people will most likely get off at this exit just to get gas or food. But I think Old Stone Lodge is a real "diamond in the rough" and I would recommend it for single people or couples who find themselves in the area and need a place to rest for the night. I plan to keep staying here as long as the place is open and wish the owner the best of luck with the ongoing renovations.

All 3 of which are non smokers. We noticed a $250.00 charge to our bank statement 5 days after their stay. When we questioned this matter, we were addressed by a very rude older woman who identified herself as "The Owner" to which this took some questioning and wouldn't give me her name until I explained the nature of my call and all of my information (that is fine but shady). Once I kindly explained that all 3 people were non smokers and that we generally stay at Best Western but due to time of day and vacancy were directed here; she proceeded to tell me that they were all 3 smoking in the rooms (again all non smokers) then when I told her that they were all 3 non smokers and this didn't add up, she changed it to there being tobacco spit on walls and curtains? They also don't chew and these are 3 grown men. She then answered that maybe they had people over (again ma'am we are there to provide a professional service we know nobody there other than our customer) the whole thing didn't stack up. Then I asked why she waited 5 days to charge our card? She hung up on me. If you know and have proof that this happened, why not stand by the original reason? Then I started investigating... turns out, this has happened to MANY of their customers. I called back leaving a vm that I do in fact plan on making a dispute as well as am prepared to send over to my attorney. It isn't the money, it is the principle. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT stay here. Find a Best Western. We love them and have rented rooms hundreds of times being on the road and have NEVER had this issue. Think about all of the people that just don't have time to mess with this! Or have been charged without their knowledge... I am sure that adds up! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
