Before I even looked up, Larry was in the back of the store and said "no animals here!" So much for a warm welcome. I responded with a friendly "aww" and was about to explain to my son that they didn't have any bunnies and move forward with my shopping. But Larry looked at me and responded with nothing but a shoulder shrug and a smug look on his face. The kind of shrug that said "this is a you problem, not a me problem." Second time now, owner Larry has exceeded his claim. The last time, he proved himself to be a man of integrity, so I didn't hesitate today when he suggested we try a new form of food for my Pom Ernie. Mind you, at first I chuckled at the price of the freeze-dried food, wandering the store on my own, but Larry knows what he sells. Conversation led us right to those bags! I took the bag home, added a small amount to his normal kibble for a safe tummy transition, hydrated it for the suggested ten minutes and -- for the first time in his nine years -- he ate a full bowl of food without hesitation! Normally, he eats when hungry from his food ball and doesn't touch food in his bowl. Remarkable. As mentioned to Larry, he's gonna' change Ernie's life! Ya' just can't get this kind of priceless neighborly advice from an online vendor. He then made a remark about a different, large customer who was entering the store and gestured toward her and said ,"Speaking of zoo animals.." and then followed it up with,"...sorry,I just couldn't resist." I went out of my way for years to support this small business, as I know how difficult it is for small business owners to compete with online stores and supers stores. I happened to stop in on my way out of town in the scorching heat (in July) and found not only relief from the heat for me and my pooch, but the most friendly and helpful people I have encountered in a business ever! Larry the owner was so personable and helpful in assisting me with my finicky eater companion and was not only knowledgeable, but also very generous with providing samples for him to try. Jeanette was just as kind caring and helpful! I can not say enough about how impressed I was with the genuine care and concern...old world personal business the way every store should operate. Larry's and Megan's knowledge and devotion to animal health and nutrition is as real as it gets. It's family owned with over 40 yrs. of experience. They carry high end products that they actually use themselves. I've personally witnessed Megan nursing a baby sparrow that fell from the roof of Vons. I'm happy to say that the sparrow made a full recovery and was released. That's compassion at it's best. Speaking of birds, they now have 3 beautiful, young and playful birds for sell. I love how it's evolved over time and become exactly what we needed as a community. And that's what I feel like it's like a community store it's a part of us. The customer service is always amazing. My daughter did a review of Love's, but it was removed, because it was not a first-hand account (even though she was with me when I purchased my dog). Here is MY first-hand account: I wish I could give zero stars for Love's Pets. I purchased a puppy here in August of 2009. I have always rescued dogs--never purchased them--because I don't want to support puppy mills. I specifically asked Larry and his wife who was working that day if this puppy I loved was from a puppy mill. Both reassured me that she was from a friend in the midwest, with whom they have done business for years. Upon reading the dog's registration papers, it is clear that she is from a puppy mill. She cost me close to $1500, but the Helene sells her puppies for around $300. Please consider adopting your next dog. I stopped in here to shop for my baby, Stella my most amazing boxer. The owner was very friendly and helpful. I give him high stars even though he is a Trojan and I am a Bruin, which is a much superior type of fellow. Anyhow, I enjoyed my experience. He was funny and personable. He helped me pick a type of food that would not irritate my dogs skin - she gets itchy if the food is not of the highest quality. I also purchased a handful of bully sticks - the non smelly kind. Weird things these bully sticks, but Stella's loves them. The store was a bit sparse, but it seemed to be filled with quality merchandise. I'll be back. read more
