When we bought our house five years ago, the backyard was basically a blank slate. My wife and I…read morealways talked about turning it into a space we could actually enjoy and be proud to show off when friends and family came over. Like a lot of homeowners, we spent years trying to tackle it ourselves, pulling weeds here and there and telling ourselves we'd eventually get around to the bigger project. Eventually, we realized it was time to bring in the professionals and finally make our vision a reality. I did quite a bit of research and had five different contractors come out to provide estimates. The pricing was all over the place, but NW Quality Construction & Hardscape immediately stood out. Jesus was able to come out within an hour to take a look at the project, and he gave me a rough estimate on the spot that ended up being within a few hundred dollars of the final proposal. That gave me a lot of confidence because it showed he understood the market, knew his craft, and came prepared. Once the project started, their attention to detail really impressed me. Before any work began, they carefully marked everything out and double-checked with me to make sure it matched the plan exactly. Throughout the project, they kept the worksite clean and organized. Since they were using the driveway and part of the street to stage rocks and mulch, they made a point to sweep everything up at the end of each day before heading home. Now that the backyard is finally finished, it honestly feels like we just moved into the house again. After five years of looking at an unfinished space, we finally have a backyard that we're excited to spend time in and proud to share with others. I truly appreciate Jesus and his crew for the care, professionalism, and hard work they put into this project. They transformed our backyard into a space that my family will enjoy for years to come.

I want to remodel my kitchen and when I went to get a roll-off dumpster, the waste company made me…read moredo an asbestos test. When asbestos was found in the ceiling, I contacted an abatement company with more than 100 positive reviews to give a bid. They sent a guy out who admitted that he was just learning because of a recent departure from the company, then said that I would have to replace my entire ceiling (drywall and all) because mine is not popcorn that could be scraped off but asbestos in the stucco-like coating. "Expensive?" I asked. "Yep," he said as he walked out the door. Then I waited weeks for a bid that never came. With flooring installers scheduled to arrive in two weeks, I had to do something to demo the wall of cabinets and appliances in the way and while I didn't really relish the thought of hiring a company with just one review, I called JJ Environmental Solutions LLC. They came over immediately, bid the job and said they could do it the next week, in time of the flooring installation. So I hired them. The man who bid the job said his dad had worked for two decades at the long-established first company I had contacted that ultimately didn't produce a bid. When I met the father, he said that the previous company had paid him well but that he wanted to start his own company. OK, then. Dad arrived at 7:00 a.m. to prep for the remediation. While I had intended on being out of the house, one of my pups was very sick so we had to stay put. We locked ourselves away in the back of the house while they did their work. They created a plastic bubble to work in and protect the rest of the house from any asbestos dust. Three hours later, they were done. Instead of removing my entire ceiling, they removed the asbestos area that touched the drywall, then removed all the drywall on the wall, something the asbestos tester had said was possible and what I expected. But, they left the framing of the wall. When I was in the back of the house, I had thought they were pretty trusting to take my word for it and demo the whole wall. I had engaged two different engineers, who were here for other projects, to look and see if the wall was load-bearing. While each said no, there was no signed certification as such because they were not there for that. So I was actually not surprised that JJ Environmental did not remove the framing. I can still get the flooring installed and there will ultimately be an island where that wall exists now. And to be fair, their bid stated that they were just going to remove the drywall, not the wall. So it was all up front. While I want to work quickly, I have no need to cut dangerous corners. I had been prepared to put a beam over this island is necessary. Now I will get a contractor who is absolutely charged with determining the structural integrity to deal with my island and house structure. I have no complaints with JJ Environmental Solutions. JJ Environmental Solutions dealt with my immediate asbestos needs on my timetable -- a success. And when they moved the appliances, they found two spots where there was no vinyl flooring (that will stay put under the new installation of flooring) with asbestos that they abated as well for no extra charge. They cleaned up after themselves and were on their way. I know it is scary to hire a new company, especially in a situation like asbestos remediation. But the man who ran my asbestos abatement has doing the job for 20 years. Now, he is just doing it for himself and his own family.

This company came out and tested the flooring and confirmed there was asbestos. My communications…read morewith them up until this point seemed very professional and straightforward, and I was in a panic when I discovered the asbestos issue, so I told them to go forward with abatement. I researched online and learned that abatement of mastic on hardwood floors can be done by scraping or sanding or other methods, and the guy who refinished my hardwood floors a couple years ago got it off of the floor and refinished the wood without issue, so I assumed this would be the case. When I came home, I was horrified when I realized they had cut out all of the hardwood boards out of my kitchen and removed them, instead of scraping and sanding the hardwoods. I'm now out $1800 AND I literally don't have a floor anymore. When I spoke to them over the phone, I was assured that removing the boards was the ONLY way to address the issue, which is simply untrue. I feel like an idiot for not researching other abatement companies, as it was a decision I made in panic. It's too late now, but now I'm researching and finding all of these other companies that offer abatement in Portland for hardwood flooring where the mastic can be removed. When I saw photos of other local companies work post-removal, I felt even more like an idiot. There was no need for me to lose my floors entirely in this process. This has been a nightmare. I was told this company specializes in abatement, but it seems they specialize in demolition, and ensure abatement in the process of said demolition. Unless you're looking to tear out a wall or a floor or cabinetry entirely, I would not recommend.
