You'd have thought I told her I was gonna stick needles in my eyes the way she reacted. She told me that "everyone" got their eyes dilated to which I repeated that I wasn't doing that today. She continued to push, saying it was "protocol". I reiterated that I wasn't doing that today and when she continued trying to get me to acquiesce, I told her that she was probably used to old people giving in after that much pressure, but that wasn't gonna happen with me, and I asked her nicely to just drop it. She said she, "Wasn't gonna get talked to like that" and stormed out. When Dr. Daniel came in he seemed a bit uptight... and began to explain why I should get dilated. I told him why I wasn't and that I was supposed to be just getting a new prescription. He seemed a bit chapped and then he walked out. I got the impression that they don't like being told "no". I know the reasons for the need to get dilated, but I just wasn't able to do that TODAY. They did send in a nice lady, Hailey, to examine my eyes and she was friendly and professional.. but I won't be going back there.

There were over 15 people waiting outside the door for the building to be opened. Many of them were elderly or handicapped with very limited out side seating. Thankfully the weather was good. Once in you stood in a line to check in. There was no order as to who checked in first. I was the 3rd to arrive since I arrived the standard 15-20 minutes before my appointment but about the 15th to be checked in. The staff was friendly and seemed professional and organized. My problem was with Dr Smith. I felt that he was condescending and not very patient. He was using a very bright light to look into my eyes. There was no forewarning or suggestions on how I was to do this. It was a very hard task for me. I apologized repeatedly. Dr Smith said to me " If you can't look into the light how do you expect us to do the surgery?" I felt like as a failure as he failed to understand how difficult this was for me. He showed no compassion and I felt like I was wasting his time. I try hard to follow instructions and felt very upset when I left his office. Possibly Dr Smith could have given me instructions to make this process easier. He does it everyday ... me once in my lifetime. I will be looking for someone more compassionate to do my surgery ... that I will be paying for.

Fast forward to my birthday weekend spent in bed with swollen eyes and having to cancel all of my plans. Between this clearly avoidable issue, the fact that it took over two hours to do the lasik consultation (of which I spent 1 and half hours waiting), and the $200 fee for the consultation (while other eye doctors do this for free) that only resulted in me being blind for my birthday, I simply don't know why anyone would go to this place. Sigh. I'm only giving 1 star because my father's eye surgery was botched and recovery diagnosis ended up making my father blind. This changed my father's life from being independent one day to co-dependent for help. And changed our whole family's life to be caregivers. One day my dad could drive ... the next - NOT! I keep hearing this was the rare and first time this had happened with Oakman... What I've learned after the fact is only Because of this experience, we should have gotten a 2nd and even 3rd opinion from different surgeons on draining the blood filled eye...but was never told to go get that as option, as some self assuredness kept coming from the doc... wrong - go get a 2nd opinion! This, the optic nerve died. Yes, it's all hind sight now. I'm sure he's a good dr. overall ... just not that day for my dad... sad... You may not like my review and I'm sure he's great. Just more careful in future now, I'm sure.

We were living in a different city, when my wife called Dr. Oakman and asked what we should do. He immediately told my wife to get me in the car and drive to Augusta and when we arrived he would see what he could do. While we were headed to his office, he set up an operating room in the basement with all the instruments and medicines that would be necessary. Once we arrived, Dr. Oakman carefully, gently, methodically removed every single piece of glass. He made sure that I constantly had enough liquid numbing medication to prevent me from ever feeling any pain at all from the lengthy surgery. After the main surgery and glass removal, Dr. Oakman insisted that we stay at his office until I was completely comfortable and he was absolutely sure that every single piece of glass had been removed to my his and my satisfaction. My post op treatment was excellent, with Dr. Oakman following up regularly with advice and help where needed. This was quite a traumatic experience for me and my family, but Dr. Oakman saved my eye and my eyesight is actually better in the eye that he repaired than in the healthy eye. Except for very occasional night driving glasses, my vision is still quite good as I approach AARP membership! It is very likely that I would have lost my left eye had it not been for Dr. Oakman's skill and help. You can feel confident that you will receive the best care possible from Dr. Oakman. There are some reasons you may wait for a long time. He may be swamped with patients that come see him from a multi state area. He practices a triage approach and takes time to treat emergencies .. your also. At my first injection (me on aspirin) my eye bled, turned black crusty. When I called service on Sunday, he called back in 10 minutes and told me to come into office (after we both completed some work). His staff routinely stays late, 7 pm, or later fridays....until done. Delays due to emergencies. This guy is a diamond and augusta is blessed to have him. I will wait for treatment. I want to keep my vision as long as possible. If your priority is your eyesight, go here.

Oh, it's quite possibly the worst, money grubbing, lying and downright scandalous business in Aiken…read moreCounty. It was $248 for the exam, they didn't say it Wasn't for contacts as well until after the appointment. So"all encompassing" means something different at Aiken Opthalmology. And never mind the cataracts that every doctor for the last five years has noticed because evidently mine have simply vanished! Then, after taking my own plain Jane black plastic frames, they charge $358 for lenses. When I tried to get them to at least get me an Rx for contacts they said I had to come back in three hours. So on my way home to wait and come back I was hit by a drunk driver. Wasn't able to make it back. And guess what? They sent me a nasty email and said I owed them $105 dollars for missing the appointment! If it were possible to give negative stars and take back their two star review I would.
