I came to her in late 2015-after 13 years not only with the wrong diagnosis but also on not one, not two, but THREE wrong, highly addictive medications. She has helped me get off two, work with other doctors to get my horribly messed up medical history corrected (as much as can be done) and fight with my insurance company (when they didn't seem to understand why I needed an extremely strong anti-nausea med while SLOWLY withdrawing). I started out with Dr A for both med management & counseling-the frequency changes depending on what's going on-Maybe at some point I'll change; she already knows my history and I don't have to repeat it. I need that continuity. Her office staff are fantastic. They get to know each patient (on your terms-definitely not pushy and nothing regarding your session). Now, I chat with the Office Mgr as I come and go. This is a small office, any paperwork is done by few, so I also try hard to be polite and thankful for any help-a couple of times it has been way beyond expectations. Ive never had any problems but I know I can express my concerns & they will be addressed (I might want to wait till I've HAD MY SESSION FIRST, as my issue may have vanished as I calmed down ) Unfortunately I don't believe Dr A is currently accepting new clients-She MIGHT have a wait list or take a client depending on the situation. Who knows. However any recommendations that come from her staff (I didn't ask if I could publish their names) should be high quality. One option-if you are willing to split Med Management & Psychotherapy, at least w Therapists work in the same suite-I will try to get their info to publish. And keep reading as you should feel comfortable going to them.... If you call and a recommendation THIS is why you should try it out: 1. Most are from patient interactions or Dr A's own experiences with them-and we are picky. 2. Dr A has been in the Greater Austin area for almost 3-4 years, she has great connections AND is highly respected within the medical community. I can't begin to tell you how overwhelmed I felt when the hospital called to let me know she was discharging. Unfortunately, the hospitals tend to discharge before they are stable enough to function in normal daily life. I knew my husband and I would not be be able to manage her at home initially, so I began searching for help. This is when I found Alta Loma. After researching them and reading the bios of the people that run it and work there, I decided to give them a call. George called me back promptly and was so helpful. Honestly, it was a huge relief just hearing what he had to say about what they do, and how they can help with our situation. He worked with not only my husband and I, but also worked with the hospital to help us get our daughter transitioned straight to Alta Loma at her hospital discharge. She has now been at Alta Loma for five weeks, and is making great progress! I get to talk to her several times a week, and I love that they are teaching her how to manage her disease. I can hear major improvements each week just over the phone. She talks about all the things she is learning in her process group classes, and continues to tell me how nice everyone is there, and how great the food is. Her therapist Jessica is amazing and specializes in my daughter's disease. She really has a way of connecting with her, which is super important. I also love that this company really helps support the families as well. Not only do they offer a weekly support group and weekly family therapy calls with our daughter, we also just attended one of their 3-day classes which helps teach us how to manage things when our daughter comes home. Hannah and Jerry led this class, and they too are great! We met a lot of families in the class that are struggling with a family member's disease as well. I realized most of them were from out of state. We are so fortunate in Texas that we have a wonderful place like Alta Loma, and I feel truly blessed that my daughter is healing and recovering with them. Thank you Alta Loma for all you are doing!

They told me they handled it several days before I even tried to refill my medication and that they would call me later to update me. Two days later after no communication I call back and am told I can't get a refill because I take Adderall which I have literally never taken. They then tell me that they once again handled the refill several days before I tried to refill my medication. So I call my pharmacy and they tell me that they have received nothing from PD. I call PD back and tell them and am told they will figure it out. They then call later that day (huge improvement I'm proud of yall) and tell me I need an appointment because I haven't been seen in a year. So why did they wait until then to tell me that I needed an appointment in order to get my refill a week after I tried to get it? Why was I told it had already been taken care of on their end? Why don't they know that I've never taken Adderall?

This was possibly the single most regrettable mistake I have ever made in my life, and I am a person who once dated a guy into competitive yoyoing. Within fifteen minutes of meeting me, Dr. Calzada had not only ignored everything I had to say but also diagnosed me with borderline (I exhibit no traits of borderline), declared that my depression was a result of the "negative self-image" I'd cultivated due to my parents' "negative treatment of me as a young child" (not true), diagnosed my FATHER with depression and borderline (????), and told me a 20-minute story about an anorexic girl who couldn't recognize that she wasn't overweight and subsequently died (an uplifting, optimistic tale that greatly boosted my spirits). Literally the only reason I didn't get up and leave was because I needed my prescriptions; I spent the entire hour with a fake grin plastered on my face, smiling and nodding and just waiting for the minute hand to tick over until I could finally leave. "He's not going to be your therapist," I told myself internally, grappling with the idea of continuing to see him for medication management, "so you don't actually need to have a rapport with him," but considering I felt more in-tune with a psychiatrist from years ago whose intake paperwork included the question "are you homosexual" (gotta love in-network providers) I could barely imagine myself coming back and subjecting myself to another few months of this. I can't give this practice zero stars, but I suppose they do deserve one star: an appointment was made by the office staff, the chairs were comfortable, I was offered water, and Dr. Calzada did end up writing my prescriptions -- at least, for a medication I couldn't possibly afford. When I reached out to the office to help me fill out some paperwork for a patient assistance program, I learned it would be another $100 for them to help me fill out the paperwork (which I needed because, you know, I couldn't afford my medication). I have not contacted the practice since and, thankfully, neither have they contacted me. If I had a time machine, I'd go back and tell myself to fork out the extra $100-200 to see another psychiatrist. ANY other psychiatrist. Or I'd just buy two of those Bigfoot sculptures and set them on either side of my desk, spurred into productivity by the look of intensity in their twin hand-painted resin-cast visages.

Over the years, I have been moved between multiple providers due to provider turnover within the practice. I recently called for a refill and was told by the receptionist that I could not receive any medication, not even a short bridge refill, until I completed an appointment. I was given no advance notice that this would happen. In the past, I have been able to schedule an appointment and receive a small temporary supply until I could be seen. Because of this sudden refusal, I am now experiencing withdrawal symptoms, including brain zaps, after abruptly stopping a medication I have taken for years. My concern is not simply about scheduling. My concern is the lack of continuity of care, lack of notice, and lack of a safe medication plan for an established psychiatric patient. I understand the importance of follow-up appointments, but abruptly leaving a long-term patient without a bridge refill or provider review feels unsafe and unacceptable. This experience has been very disappointing after four years with the practice, and I would not feel comfortable recommending them based on how this was handled.
