Nicole is not only an incredible teacher (she made very difficult concepts easy for our son to understand), she is so calm, patient and willing to go the extra mile to optimize our son's learning and comfort with the course material. Our son went from being very intimidated by a challenging course (to the point that he almost dropped the class) to being very confident with grasping the information and taking exams. He was diagnosed with dyslexia in 4th grade, and as his mom, I felt completely helpless because Hawaii simply doesn't have the specialized resources for intensive reading remediation that children with dyslexia need. We were referred to Merrill Educational Center by our neuropsychologist at Golden State Neuropsychology, and it was one of the best recommendations we've ever received. Even though we live out of state, Nicole and Lynne worked with us over Zoom, making it possible for our son to receive the instruction he desperately needed. They used the Lindamood-Bell Seeing Stars® program along with Direct Reading Therapy, and the progress has been incredible. Not only has our son's reading improved tremendously, but so has his confidence. Nicole and Lynne are knowledgeable, patient, encouraging, and truly invested in the success of the children they work with. They took the time to understand our son's individual needs and supported our family every step of the way. If you have a child struggling with dyslexia or reading challenges, I cannot recommend Merrill Educational Center highly enough. My son was one of the older and more skilled kids but he still got to work on his game and it helped get some of the rust off after a long lay off from basketball and traveling over the summer. Though the academics are current (Common Core-based), the teachers all practice "differentiated instruction," meaning they tailor their teaching to the different learning styles of each student. The school is like a big family with so many great parents, an active PTO, a devoted and caring school board, and fantastic faculty and staff who sacrifice early mornings and late nights to be sure our kids get the best possible whole-person education. My only complaints would be that (1) they don't have a cafeteria (though they do offer a "hot lunch" by way of fast food or class-sponsored meals), and (2) I'd like the school to have enough students that each grade would have its own classroom, rather than two-grade rooms (K-2 are single, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 are double). So, it's not PERFECT, but it's the BEST. And the more the kids that enroll, the better it'll get.

What first stood out to us was the small class sizes, but we quickly realized that "small" is actually one of this school's greatest strengths. The teachers truly know and care for their students, go above and beyond to help them succeed, and are able to fully teach the curriculum instead of constantly playing catch-up. Students have opportunities to participate in weekly chapel, STEM, gardening, PE, musicals, extracurricular activities, and one of my favorite things -- ASL for all students with daily practice opportunities. Looking back, I can clearly see God's hand leading our family here. We wanted a school where we could be involved and build community... and apparently God took that prayer seriously because I somehow ended up as PTL president. I asked for a way to help and He responded with, "Wonderful, here's a full-time ministry!" Haha. What this school may lack in size, it more than makes up for in heart. The school community is amazing, with fun events throughout the year like Trunk or Treat, Christmas shops, spirit weeks, family celebrations, and a huge end-of-year event everyone looks forward to. In my role with PTL, I've had the unique opportunity to work closely with teachers, staff, and parents. Like any school, families sometimes come and go, but I can honestly say I've seen the administration approach difficult situations with prayer, communication, grace, and genuine care. They strive to put God first in their decisions, and I think it speaks volumes that I've seen several families return and re-enroll after leaving. Most importantly, this school has deeply impacted our family's life. The teachers, staff, and church community have become like family to us. I would certainly rate the salon 1 star if I could. I'm autistic. I went in to their salon services get a short, basic haircut. The entire time I was bullied by my barber during the haircut. There were many things he did to me and said to intentionally try to make a joke out of me. Other students eventually started gathering around and ridiculing me and snickering. There was absolutely no supervision. I know I'm an easy target because I'm autistic, but that does not excuse this whatsoever. It is not okay to make fun of disabled people and it's not okay that this behavior wasn't prevented by the teachers. The haircut itself was awful and took a while to grow out long enough to touch up. Very choppily cut and poorly done. But I don't mind because it's a school and they need experience. My mom was coming over from the front to give him a tip, not knowing what had happened, but even she saw that people were just surrounding me and laughing at me, so she turned right back around. My mom had called the place after. The instructor was kind and offered a free, supervised touch up. This is good to note. I didn't accept it because I already go through enough of these experiences in my life because some people like to use an autistic person (or just weaker targets in general such as the elderly, the homeless, etc.) as an excuse to be cruel, I don't need to risk going back to a place that treated me like that. But she listened and seemed to care, so that's what matters. I had a meltdown as soon as we got back in the car to go home and it lasted for hours. I shouldn't have to be judged and bullied for being quiet and having difficulty socializing. Those were things outside of my control because I'm disabled. They appeared to be around my same age of 18, so immaturity is certainly inevitable in a classroom, but this was just cruel in my opinion. You have to sit down for several minutes just defenselessly being subjected to ridicule for things outside of your control. There absolutely should've been supervision. I'm not going to place blame on the instructors and supervisors because they weren't the ones who bullied me, but this sort of thing shouldn't even be able to happen. Things may have changed in the year since I've been and I sure hope they have. Supervision may have tightened. Obviously, a single instance does not define the entirety of the salon. If you're autistic or disabled in any other way, you're already taking risks wherever you go. It's your choice to make and things could be good now. I just wanted to document my experience so it doesn't get brushed under the rug. If you read my review and experience, thank you. I wasn't able to advocate for myself in the moment because I was overwhelmed. It was hard to speak. But at least I have the ability to retroactively articulate. Not all autistic people do. And those are the stories that you don't hear about because not all of us can speak for ourselves, so that is why I'm sharing this experience because I am able to in place where others may have not been able to.
