Excellent work! My teeth look beautiful! Watch out for (1) up sell and (2) billing practices. Left practice when dental hygienist tried to convince me I needed a $1500 deep cleaning as gums tender from chemo/radiation. Sought second opinion and glad I did! Recovered well with regular cleaning! Still wonder about the doctor's oversight of staff. Should the doctor not have reviewed and approved the recommended $1500 treatment? Another point of dissatisfaction has to do with billing. Paid in full ($3500) for Invisalign. Insurance, surprise, contributed $800, paid directly to Dr. Lothamer. Refused to refund the $800; had to use it as "credits" for teeth cleanings (I typically do not services beyond cleaning.) Guess that is one way to keep a client! read more

I came to Dr. Lothamer after reading good reviews about his dental work. I moved and needed a new dentist and I had a cleaning and needed two other visits for filling replacements (that I already knew about) and I have no complaints and he does do good dental work. My problem with the office and one star review is that I was NEVER told by the rude receptionist (his wife) that they are out of network for my insurance (United Healthcare) and I was going to see Dr. Lothamer specifically for filling replacements that would cost me a lot of money out of pocket if they are out of network and I got a $700 bill after the work was done. I would have looked elsewhere for an in network dentist if the receptionist was upfront about being out of network. Long story short, his wife submitted the claims to my insurance incorrectly so that the entire claim check would be sent to our home instead of their office and we would have to deposit a check and then go and pay the dentist the entire claim amount. (I have never experienced this type of claim payment). The check was lost in the mail and I had to spend a lot of time on the phone with the insurance to reissue the lost check. While communicating this to the receptionist that it will be about 30-60 days until the insurance mails a $2,500 check, she tells me that I better pay immediately or I will be sent to collections or small claims court. I do not have the funds to pay the total claim amount and it was 100% her fault for filing the claim incorrectly in the first place and my personal amount owed I was $700. I'm not one to complain or leave bad reviews but the receptionist was very defensive, rude, and screamed on the phone and then said "we will see you in small claims court" and hung up. I did read reviews of how awful the receptionist was but didn't think much of it because she isn't the dentist and only handles the scheduling and accounting. Please understand that I am an even keeled person and the receptionist is very defensive and blame shifts and appears to be very narcissistic about taking accountability for her mishandling of my claim and I will now be searching for an in network office. Dr. Lothamer is great but his wife (receptionist) is awful! read more

Oh no! I wish this review could be better, maybe it could be better, if I had actually made it into the office. I have had to reschedule with Dr. Lothamer (or just the receptionists, really) 2 times before my appointment today. I received no type of confirmation before the appointment. To be sure my dates and times were correct, I decided to call the office to confirm my appointment for the day. I called every 30 minutes from 9AM-1PM, and got the answering machine every time. Finally, I decided to take the chance and drive 40 minutes to the office. After multiple calls and messages to the office throughout the morning, the receptionist called (30 minutes before my appointment) to tell me they needed to reschedule... again. I was clearly a little frustrated, and asked what happened? Why was the appointment cancelled so last minute? Before I could get another word in, the receptionist snapped back, saying "lets not go there. Do you want to reschedule or find another dentist". Woah! What about customer service? I told her I may have to think about it (I can find another place that doesn't require me to jump through hoops), and she replied with "Don't think any more, find another dentist". This looks so bad for this office, even if the dental services are exceptional. What an absolutely horrible customer service experience with someone who clearly has no patience or amicability. I see other reviews speaking about the unprofessional and rude attitude of front desk --maybe the office should check-up-on this. This dentist office has lost my service, solely due to the fact that the receptionist basically told me to fuck off. read more

Dr Scott has been fantastic to work with for several years. The staff are so nice and friendly. I feel Dr. Scott really goes above and beyond. He makes sure you are comfortable and explains any issues or concerns very clearly. I highly recommend this place to anyone. You will not be disappointed. read more

Awesome dentist, great staff. I particularly like how good he is at cosmetic work. I used to have a gap between my upper teeth that was big enough to park a bike in. After a couple of hours with Dr Lothamer, the gap disappeared and they looked like they had never been anything but perfect. Dr Lothamer doesn't need any flash or sizzle to make his practice into something it's not. Just high quality dental work in a traditional environment. Plenty of time allowed for every appointment, the dr always pops in even if I am just having a cleaning. Really feels like small business should, not one of those big practices that tries to farm through as many people as possible. All 5 of our family go there and would never consider changing. Bear in mind that most dental insurance is pretty limited and to get the best dental care and products, you should expect to incur a few extra bucks of co-pay or deductible. It's worth it though, because your teeth are pretty important! If only all medical treatment was this good. read more

I'm not sure how many people write reviews about their dentist but I felt I should. The entire office at this dentist office is very good. Their attention to detail is a staple for them. They continue to make you feel as good as you can even when going to the dentist. The work you receive at this dentist is the best I ever experienced and have ever heard of. They are very involved to make sure every detail including the fit of a crown, the temporary crown, the cleaning process and making themselves available when you have an emergency are just a couple of their strengths. They are by far a complete office with great service and a superior product! I would highly recommend. read more

I'm new to Moraga, and needed a dentist. I read the reviews on folks in the area, and Dr. Lothamer's reviews seemed pretty good, so I gave him a shot. (uh, no pun intended) I had a tooth that I knew was a problem, and sure enough, it needed a crown. GAAAA! I had three, now four, and while I'm not saying that I'd do this for fun (think Steve Martin & Bill Murray - Google it with 'dentist') it was pretty easy. I think it was the first temporary I ever had that didn't come two days after I got it. (Oh, just chew on the other side - for 10 days!) Maybe we just connected, but I think he does great work. His staff is sure great. Definitely worth a visit. read more

Note this review is NOT about Dr. Lothamer but rather his billing person, Stephanie. My family of 3 began seeing Dr. Lothamer in February of this year and each of our experiences with him have been wonderful. Each time we visited his office we paid our bill, as estimated, immediately. As I am a divorced Mother, the office was informed to bill my ex-husband for 50% of my children's services. Last week I received a very unfriendly, unprofessional phone call from Stephanie regarding a balance on our account. I inquired if my ex had been billed for the balance due and was informed that he had never been billed. I informed Stephanie that I had paid for all our services upon my visit. Stephanie then informed me that the balance due (minimal) needed to be paid immediately. I requested that she bill my ex as he was the insurance holder and the balance due was his. She said she did not have his address. I informed her that all that information was collected upon our initial visit (3 individual client files). Stephanie then called my ex-husband and proceeded to speak poorly about me, the Mother of our children, and a client of Dr. Lothamer. My ex was not happy with his conversation with Stephanie and he asked me to figure out what the problem was. I called Stephanie again and attempted to explain to her that Dr. Lothamer had agreed to bill 50% of my children's services to my ex-husband. Stephanie then told me that was not her problem. I suggested we meet to go over her minimal balance due. I met with Stephanie on Friday. Not only did she continually call my ex my husband (who is happily remarried now), she repeatedly called me by a first name that was not mine. Further, I reviewed my children's client files and showed her in both where the remaining balance should be forwarded as outlined in our client intake forms. Stephanie again said that was not her problem. Stephanie was rude, dismissive and unprofessional. Stephanie's attitude towards me and my ex husband has now resulted in me and our children to not return to Dr. Lothamer until Stephanie is no longer in his office. If you want a great dentist, Dr. Lothamer is amazing. Unfortunately, his administrative assistant, Stephanie, is so rude and unprofessional, I would not recommend visiting his office as you would have to deal with such an unpleasant person. read more

Dr. Lothamer is an exceptional dentist. He is a highly skilled perfectionist that always gets it right the first time and has a gentle caring nature. My wife, and two daughters (6 and 10) also see him and really like him. I have been to many dentists over the years due to moves and poor experiences and feel blessed to have finally found a great dentist. While it is important to like your dentist, it is even more important that they be really really good at what they do. Not only is Dr.Lothamer one of the best in his field, but his primary hygienist Jayne is also the best hygienist I have ever met. She is extremely thorough and, at the same time, has a gentle technique and is very sweet. My wife sees his other hygienist Cynthia and swears she is the best. If you live in the Lamorinda area I highly recommend you see Dr. Lothamer and Jayne or Cynthia. I wish I had found him 10 years earlier. read more
