The coffee flavour is rich and robust which I prefer. I think the Sausage egg and cheese on the other hand was okay. I think I was a bit thrown off because the sausage was a bit soggy. I think I'll still give the food here another try though just because I like the coffee so much. My partner also really liked his frappe so I think we'll be coming by again.

Perhaps it's because there are no Balzac's in any of the places I've lived that it makes it extra special that I have the opportunity to visit and feel welcome at this Balzac's in Guelph.

They roast their own fair-trade coffee right here in town, and you can taste the difference in every sip. The best part? The barista walked me through all the pour-over options like a coffee sommelier -- from bright, citrusy Ethiopian notes to smooth, cocoa-rich blends. You get to choose your own flavor journey, and it's honestly an experience every coffee lover should try. If you ever find yourself in Guelph, skip the chain and come here. You'll leave with caffeine, conversation, and probably a whole new appreciation for good coffee.

Nothing flashy or overhyped, just a well-built cafe that feels welcoming from the moment you walk in. It gave off that old-school vibe where you're encouraged to slow down, have a proper conversation, and enjoy the coffee for what it is. Everything about the space felt intentional, even the washroom was cleaner and more pleasant than most places I've been to in Toronto. That alone already made it memorable. What really stood out though was how the staff took a moment to explain why they don't serve long shots. It wasn't just a "no," it was a thoughtful explanation that showed they care about the craft. That's when I knew I was in the right place. Both the espresso and pourover were spot on. Brewed at the right temperature, right amount, clean all the way through. I could really taste the full range of the beans, and the attention to detail was obvious. I honestly wished this place was right around the corner from where I live. I'd probably even hand over my own beans just to see what they could do with them.

They also have a do-it-yourself coffee adjustment station (I have been unable to get used to the Canadian coffeehouse propensity for fixing one's coffee for one -- "Um, I don't know how many creams I want; I just add cream until it looks and tastes right, honestly!") with REAL half-and-half (I also haven't been able to understand the milk fat percentage system, here -- there's 9%, 18%, 36% -- I just want some freakin' half-and-half, 'k?).
