Pabellón criollo is the traditional meal, and they are able to make it in an arepa. Their empanadas are the best- not like empanadas from other countries, and a must have. It's the most authentic food I've been able to find on the west coast outside of my grandma's kitchen. In my opinion it's a bit penalized by being tucked away in the food court outside the new taphouse in North Albany. Los Vecinos gets a 10 for flavors. We had lunch there today: a chicken arepa and a vegan beet/potato arepa. Oh my! I was blown away by the flavor of each and the variety/piquancy of the sauces that accompanied our arepas. One star missing because the arepas themselves were cold and tasteless and the fried plantains could've used a bath in hotter oil. Still, I'd go back for the fillings - they were awesome! read more

My wife and I decided to give them a try over at The Barn. This was first time having arepas. I had a pollo mechado arepa and a carne molina y papa empanada. The flavor in these foods was unreal. The first bite was a literal moment of wow. I would highly suggest anyone wanting to try something different to give them a go. Unsuspecting food truck with incredible food. Fresh ingredients, plantains were cooked to just have a bit of crisp on the outside while being soft. Never had Venezuelan food before Los Vecinos and I was quickly a fan! The friendly staff walked me through their menu with pictures on their tablet. I got the Venezuelan ($10) at his recommendation, which is not on the menu and it was AMAZING! Shredded beef, black beans, avocado, fried plantains, and plenty of cheese in between two handmade tortillas that acted like a bun for a scrumptious Venezuelan sandwich! Hubby got the spicy keto bowl ($10 too I think), which he loved the flavor of, but would have liked the meat and cheese on tortillas like mine was since he's not actually doing keto (a friend ordered for him). He tried mine first and almost got the same thing, but wanted to try more on the menu. We also got tostones, fried plantain chips topped with cheese and a very yummy tomato based sauce ( on the side), which was a fun side dish and sooooo good as well for only $4. The first couple times I ordered food here, I was impressed. However, the last 3+ times we ordered here, the quality has gone down dramatically. My favorite item is the cheese empanada. However, over the last few times I've ordered these, the size has been dramatically inconsistent. One cheese empanada will literally be half the size of another cheese empanada. The bean and cheese empanadas are disappointing, they are full of plain black beans, very little flavor, with perhaps 1/2 ounce of half-melted America cheese. The other empanada I used to enjoy was the beef and potato, however, these are now half the size they used to be. Today, we ordered a few different types of empanadas for our family's dinner, and I was appalled. All 4 of the cheese empanadas were the tiniest I had seen yet, AND they were EMPTY. Like, literally all the cheese had melted out or something, and they were tiny, empty shells. $3 each, people! I've included pictures. So disappointing, this used to be my favorite food truck at The Barn. read more
