This is a basic, solid Mexican restaurant. The menu is large. The food is good. We wish it had a bit more flavor, but it's standard Mexican fare. It has a couple of different room and seating arrangements. The service is good. We've been before and we'll return. read more

I met my son half way from Virginia Beach for him and my DIL to pick up my granddaughter and this their choice for lunch. My granddaughter and I arrived 45 minutes earlier due to the snow my son was getting on the Maryland side. The young men there were fantastic and sat us - got us drinks and chips and salsa and my granddaughter wanted Queso dip. I let them know it would be a while before we ordered but they still kept checking on us to refill drinks and chips - great customer service. When the rest of our party got there they were quick to get drink orders and orders. I filled up on chips so I just opted for the Chicken enchilada soup. My son got the Chile Rellenos, DIL got the Nachos and granddaughter got chicken and rice. The food was decent. I'm from California and my type of "Mexican food" is very different than what is found here normally. Spice levels are not the same. Overall everyone enjoyed their food. Their customer service was amazing. I would recommend it for this area. read more

I visited this restaurant recently and the staff immediately welcomed me. It was decorated for Halloween in the door way, super cute. I wasn't able to tell from outside what it would look like inside, it's spacious and beautiful. The staff were continuously thoughtful throughout my experience. They made sure I had what I needed and was enjoying my food. I ordered a quesadilla from the kids menu which was nicely plated and yummy. I also ordered beef/chicken fajitas. The meat was absolutely delicious. I hope I can visit again during my time here, I recommend this restaurant wholeheartedly! read more

A year and half ago I had reviewed this place and not been very kind for the simple reason that the food sucked. I went back today to give it another try.........mistake! The food was cold (despite me being 8 minutes from there and absolutely tasteles. I'm done! Save your $$$. If you want good Mexican food go to MI jalisco in urbanna . Absolutely disgusting! I should've known better when we parked and I saw what the outside of the kitchen look like from the outside but we were hungry and there was really no other place to eat. The waiter was nice enough Not very friendly but he did take the orders properly. I ordered the fried chile and it was basically a big lump of cheese. The rice was super hard and the tortilla chips were old tasted refried. I gave it to stars because of the waiter remember in the order and when he brought it in so it wasn't right he took it back right away. Decent Mexican food, especially for Virginia. This is high praise coming from a San Diegan, where we have (dare I say) some of the best Mexican food north of the border. Many times when we come in here it is empty. Don't let this dissuade you. The service is friendly and always helpful, and the food is surprisingly good. Not too oversalted, delicious seafood, and they get all of my special requests right the first time. I enjoyed the rice and beans, as well as my spicy shrimp entree. Not too spicy, just right. The Margaritas are pretty yummy as well. I like that they have many sizes to choose from. I got the "I hope you have a designated driver" size. I did. :) Thanks mom. read more

The quality of the food and service at Los Patrones in Kilmarnock, Virginia varies widely, and last night's experience (Friday, January 11th) was a major disappointment. As Woody Allen is quoted as saying about a new restaurant he had recently visited, "The food was not very good, and the portions are very small." The restaurant's sign on Route 3 in Kilmarnock continues to be dark, as it has been for months, and my suggestions that the bulbs be replaced generates little more than a shrug of the shoulders. The physical presentation of the restaurant is dark and dismal. It took a while for my wife and me to get our chips and salsa, and it appeared that two kids and a cook were running the place unsupervised. Management was nowhere to be seen. The shrimp in my wife's meal were very small and very tough. They did not seem to be fresh, and the portions of rice, re-fried beans, and vegetables were small. This is not a good way for a restaurant to improve its margins, and repeat business seems unlikely. I ordered the two-enchilada dinner, and the menu said that one enchilada would consist of grilled chicken and one would be filled with grilled shrimp. When my meal arrived, I found that both enchiladas were identical. It appeared that a small portion of chicken and a small portion of shrimp had been chopped into small and barely-recognizable pieces. Each "chunk" was about the size of a lima bean. The quality of the food, portion size, and presentation were disappointing in all respects. We were hungry and we decided not to return our meals to the kitchen. At no point during our meal, did our waiter visit our table to inquire as to our experience and to ask if we needed anything. When he brought us our check, I told him how disappointing the experience had been. His excuses were lame. He said, "Every Mexican restaurant does things differently," as if our experience met Los Patrones standards. He said he had not gotten back to us during our meal, because the restaurant was short-staffed. I thought I had succeeded in explaining things to him; however, when I paid my check he said, "A shrimp enchilada has shrimp in it. What else are you going to put in a shrimp enchilada?" I told him I did not want any money or discount, but he insisted on reducing our bill by $3.00. The staff of Los Patrones might wish to visit the Chinese restaurant up the street, or a good Mexican restaurant in Richmond or Newport News where quality of food and food preparation, portion size, and presentation are unfailingly excellent. read more

We ordered one Margarita and one iced tea followed by 2 orders of Fajita Grande. The Margarita was good but the Fajita Grande which was to include shrimp, steak and chicken just barely covered the plate instead of at least twice as much several months ago at the Burgess branch. I got only one small shrimp and my wife got 2. The accompanied salad plate was very small (child size) with tiny portions of beans and rice and a microscopic glob of guacamole, and the only decent size was the sour cream. However it was tasty and that is the reason for the 2 stars. On check out I discovered that they charged us for 2 Margaritas and 2 iced teas which thankfully I caught before paying the bill. We have only had lunch here, but both visits were thoroughly enjoyable. We had house margaritas, which were perfect: they were light and refreshing, and although they used a mix, it wasn't the sickly sweet kind found in so many Mexican joints. Service was totally fine; attentive but not annoying. I got the veggie buritto which was awesome, and he got chicken enchiladas which were also really good. The only disappointment was the guacamole appetizer, which arrived a second before our entrees, and was evidently seasoned with only a ton of salt. read more

The food is always delicious, the atmosphere is great, and the service can run from good to excellent depending on who's working. I came in to order food to go, as this place is one of the few on my way home. The young man behind the counter was short and rude after I said I wanted an order to go. I doubt I will stop here again on a night I don't want to cook. The food is ok, but the service is subpar. If you can, find somewhere else to eat. read more

Only Mexican restaurant in town to celebrate Cinco De Mayo. First time here. Very busy. Service was prompt. Ordered two margaritas and the were two of the poorest drinks we have had in a restaurant. Watery, no flavor. A mix would have been better. Dinner - although we ordered different meals, both plates looked the same. Rice, refried beans, some lettuce, and the non-distinguishable entree covered in sauce and cheese. Everything looked and tasted the same. Not very authentic nor tasteful. read more

The server was impolite and short with us and rushing us. while no one was there the appetizer took its time to arrive. When the food finally arrived at first glance it looked alright though the lettuce wasn't fresh and the taco salad wasn't good. Definitely feeling like trash after eating here and will not be back. I am in town for a friends wedding and the night before the wedding we decided to check out this restaurant. What a terrible experience! We ordered drinks and they were weak and too sweet. Ordered an extra tequila shot and that still didn't help cut the sweetness. When I ordered my meal, the waiter made fun of me for not being able to pronounce the dish correctly. Then he pointed out to my mother-in-law that she didn't say please when she ordered her meal, but my fiancé said please too often. When my dish arrived, it was covered in sauce. I couldn't even tell what I was eating! The cheese tasted rally gross and like plastic, plus the salsa tasted like bbq sauce! Had to use the bathroom at one point and the women's bathroom was out of order, so I had to use the men's bathroom. How awkward for a lady to be washing her hands next to a urinal?? Also, did I mention there is a hole in the wall above said urinal?? Finally to cap it off, the waiter decides to tell us the weirdest joke as we are paying for our check about condoms and how some children on a train were customer complaints about when the condom doesn't work... I ordered the taco salad....I gave it yet another try. 3 years now and it's gotten worse. As usual the ingredient ratio is bad. I ordered the "beef" taco salad. Where's the beef? I got a little lettuce which was sogged out by the overwhelming amount of beans, slight cheese and 2 tiny slivers of tomato. To top it off, the shell was over cooked....charred on one side. I'd go to Taco Bell anytime from this day forward for a taco salad and pay a whole lot less for more than what I get here. So far the only thing I'm ordering is a drink (that too has been questionable at times). I will say though that the servers are great. Shame that the cooks bring the experience down. read more

We went there for dinner once. The chips came out warm which I enjoyed. The food was pretty good but not great. The service was pretty bad. They messed up my order. The guacamole was delicious, perfectly seasoned with a great balance between the avocado and the acidity. The enchiladas and the tacos were good. Overall it was ok.
