We stopped in Los Generales for lunch on a trip through the area. We expected it would be good due to the numbers of cars in the lot and we weren't disappointed. You can pretty much guarantee that in even in small towns there are Mexican restaurants. Not all are built the same. Los Generales is fantastic. The ambience reminds me of Arizona and instantly takes me back. The staff here are tremendous. So kind, all of them. The food, I had the Qusabirria, Birria in a quesadilla. Dang! That good. The refried beans were some of the best I've had in decades. Salsa was fresh but mild. They have a hot Smokey too, just ask for it. Good veggie options! My husband ordered a vegetarian burrito with Verde sauce. It was generously loaded with veggies like broccoli, spinach, peppers and onions. Healthy and filling after a nice long hike at the national recreation area. I ordered a Chile relleno plate and asked if I could do half cheese sauce and half enchilada sauce on it as I wanted to taste both the sauces. Our server was kind enough to graciously agree and got both the sauces on the side. Both were good but I liked the cheese sauce better! I did ask if the rice and beans were vegetarian and was told yes they were, I hope they were! Lol. The rice was flavorful but I didn't care for the refried beans. Found it by doing a trusty Yelp-when-on-the-go search, and as soon as we pulled up we could tell it was the right choice by the parking lot being full. This place wasn't too big, so not a ton of seating, but we did still get a table right away. The service was pretty good... fast, and decently attentive. You may have to flag someone down for a refill, but most of the time they were good about it. I ordered the chicken diablo, which is something I've gotten at several restaurants before. It's a bit different each place, but here it seemed especially different. Mostly because the sauce seemed more like a spicy chili (as in American chili, not a pepper) flavored sauce, whereas I guess other times I've had it it's maybe more tomato and chili (this time, the pepper) based? It was also a bit more of a paste consistency than saucier like others. None of these differences were a bad or good thing... just different. At first it seemed only decently spicy, but then by the end it seemed pretty spicy. Definitely don't order unless you really do like spicy food (as opposed to just some heat)! Portion size was big, and it also came with rice, beans, and tortillas, all standard. It was a little cold inside, so when the warm tortillas came out, it was so nice! I also tried a few bites of my mom's chile rellenos, which I don't tend to like, but always like to try them if someone I'm with gets them. Really, really good. And that's coming from me, who as I just said, doesn't really like them in the first place. The breading was fantastic and it was full of tons of white queso. Almost too much that it was quite rich, but soooo good. Definitely had an overall sweetness to it, which I liked. The texture of the pepper is still a bit weird to me, but aside from that "me problem" it was certainly the best chile relleno I think I've ever tried. For the salsa, I asked if they had any hotter ones, and they brought out two more. I liked both. One was like a deep and bitter spicy flavor with maybe a slight tartness. The other was like a creamy verde salsa, but spicier than normal. The regular red salsa was also good, nothing out of the ordinary about it. FANTASTIC food, clean restaurant and great service! That's what you get when you walk into Los Generales. They even had a container of hand sanitizer waiting for ya! We ordered the combo special #1 and #2 with cheese sauce. The tortillas tasted real fresh, I especially loved the way the corn ones tasted. Delicious and came out steaming hot! Our server was great, kept our chips and drinks refilled. I ordered some sopapillas after our entree which tasted amazing, loved how they were puffs and not just flat. We read reviews prior to coming since we aren't familiar with the area and actually just camping at Turner Falls National Park craving for something different & need a break from grilling since it's been a cold camping trip for us this spring break. We started with chips, house salsa, green salsa, queso, & guacamole. My husband ordered the birria tacos, which came with 3 tacos, rice, and beans. I ordered the quesabirria, which came with guacamole, sour cream, and pico de gallo. Our girls had corn dog with French fries and side of rice. Everything was delicious! I don't remember our waiters name but he was phenomenal! He was very personable! I remember he mentioned his kids live in Bristow which is a mid point between Tulsa and Davis Oklahoma. The restaurant itself was clean and not very big but plenty of seating. I'm sure it gets very busy during the summer time when there's the most traffic in the area for Turner Falls. Authentic ass mexican food, this was delicious food!! The place is extremely authentically designed inside and out. It's cute inside and offers booth and table seating. The also have a separate room for larger groups. Their frozen margarita was perfectly blended. It wasn't too tequila strong tasting like some margs but it had a lot of alcohol and got me pretty tipsy. Their chips and salsa were good. Their salsa isn't spicy but it's extremely flavorful! Very authentic and you could tell their chopped the onions and tomatoes themselves. For dinner I had the spicy shrimp dinner. The waiter was funny and asked if I was sure I wanted it cause it was spicy. It was indeed spicy but it was flavorful and not too overpowering. It came with grilled shrimp and onions in sauce with rice and beans and homemade tortillas. Their homemade tortillas were delicious, I would definitely stock up on those to go! My husband had the #2 combo. It came with 2 enchiladas with their delicious red sauce, a Chile relleno, rice and beans. It comes with shrimp, steak, and chicken with onions, bell pepper, and she added mushrooms all over a bed of rice and queso. Great to see the staff still practicing safety regarding masks, seating with social distancing in mind etc. we were a little worried when we ordered margaritas on the rocks and they were terrible. Delighted to find this gem hidden in the Arbuckles (in plain sight)! I had the Pineapple Mexicana, O.M.G. yummy. My sweetheart had the Chili Colorado, true to the dish, very spicy but not too hot spicy. Decor is authentic, menu upscale over typical Mexican fare, prices very moderate. We were in the area for a week staying at a VRBO with the extended family (sort of a reunion). We only ate out one night because there weren't a lot of choices in Athens and Sulfur OK that are open most week nights. But we stumbled upon Los Generales and it turned out to be an excellent choice! We were a large party, including kids from toddlers to high school and adults from youth to seniors. The young lady who greeted us warmly (and I think was a waitress trainee) took one look at our party and ran for the manager :-). He seemed to personally supervise the setup of our table and took our order. The food came out quickly, the large number of orders were all accurate (including requested menu changes) and the food was excellent! Given the size of our party we had many, many of the menu selections and everyone said their choice was excellent. I VERY rarely give out five stars but Los Generales came really, really close! The sweet tea tasted like soap and dirt. Dr. Pepper tasted like dirt. When we asked for new drinks they waitress informed us everyone had been saying the Tea tasted funny and that she was too scared to try it. The Mountain Dew was drinkable but still had a hint of dirt. The waitress seemed like she didn't want to be there at all, or she was just having a bad day. The salsa tasted like marinara sauce instead of salsa. The guac was good. Cheese sauce was a bit thin but had good flavor. The Chile Relleno's, Beef Davis burrito, chicken flautas, and fajita chicken chimichanga were okay, the bell peppers in the grade burrito weren't cooked to soft and the rice was interesting. The texture of the fajita beef and fajita chicken in our entrees seemed like it had been under a warmer vs cooked fresh. Over all, our group won't be going back. read more
