Tacos, salsas and those beans are good too!

Tacos...huaraches... real deal Coca-Cola! So good! The choice of salsas is such a treat, and their serving of guacamole is plentiful, so be prepared to share! In the evenings they have some live music street side and it just adds to the ambiance. Come visit México and just chill. This is one of my favorite spots to do just that!!

This restaurant location is located main centro 10 minute walk from catedral. Had variety of tacos and salsas were all delicious!

One of my buddies that was traveling with me asked, "what is the staple food of Guadalajara?" You know, when you go to Philly you need to order a cheesesteak. Cincy you track down some skyline chili. New York, a slice of pizza. With this in mind, when in Guadalajara you have to find yourself a torta ahogada. "A torta ahogada (Spanish pronunciation: [torta a.oaða], drowned submarine sandwich) is a typical dish from the Mexican state of Jalisco, particularly in the city of Guadalajara. Although it is popular in some other parts of Mexico, it is most popular in Jalisco. It is called "drowned" because the sandwich is submerged totally or partially in a sauce made primarily of a dried chili pepper called chile de árbol. Less spicy versions of the sandwich, made with a tomato-based sauce, are also available." Source: Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torta_ahogada Though offering this masterful "sandwich" it's definitely not the best one I've had in the city. I understand that each place has their own approach and this particular restaurant is very subtle when it comes to "drowning" the sandwich and prefers to simply let it sit in the sauce, which allows the bread to maintain some integrity - I appreciate that. The kicker was that the meat really wasn't that great. On the plus side it came with two delicious taco for a whopping price tag of 42 pesos, or about $2.25 US. Do you go out of your way for this particular torta ahogada? No. Do you stop by this place if you happen to walk by? You bet your ass.

The Huarache with Pollo was the best meal I've had in Mexico. It cost under $3 USD.

They promptly let us in at 1:30, and were fully staffed waiting for the lunch crowd. You seat yourself and they immediately bring out the 4 different house salsas and a bowl of limes. Love that! There's a menu on the wall or you can scan a QR code at the table. Here's the tacos we ordered: Al pastor- best one; between my husband and I, we ate 10 of these. Costilla- husband rated 7/10 Carnaza- soft and tender Lengua- tender, not chewy, husband rated it 10/10 Dorados- crunchy tortilla with carne molido inside, and topped with carne asada..this was my 2nd favorite. Asada- tender tiny cuts of meat. Total- 10/10 we are already planning on coming back before we leave! Wait staff was attentive and the food came out quickly!

Got there around 8pm and we sat immediately. Place was full but a table for two was open. We sat down and they took our order. I ordered 3 pastor tacos and 3 asadas with cheese. I also ordered a horchata to drink. The tacos came out pretty quickly. The pastor was really good. But the star of the show was the asada WITH CHEESE. The cheese is the key. They fry up the cheese on the griddle and it gives it a slightly brown color from the heat. The asada taco with cheese is the best tacos I've ever had. If you go here order this! I ended up ordering 2 more asadas with cheese because it was so good. They have some delicious salsa at the table as well as pico de gallo and of course lime. I also ordered a jaricalla which is similar to flan. Very delicious! This place is a must stop restaurant when in Guadalajara. It does get pretty busy for a good reason. The people working were very nice. If I didn't have so many places I wanted to try I would have gone again during my visit. This place is simply amazing!!!!

The aguas frescas are okay, not made from scratch. We ordered the orden de birria to share. It's about right for two people, but if you like more meat, it might not be enough. To make it work for us, we ordered two quesadillas and a consome (birria soup). Note that the order does come with freshly made tortillas.

Y todas buenas.

The platter comes with a (non alcoholic) drink for an extra $5 MXN for a grand total of $100 MXN for a delicious and filling lunch. It was very busy and as a result the food did take awhile to come out. Also, it was a little confusing that you pay up front despite it otherwise being a full table-service restaurant. With that said, service was very friendly so I'll chalk the confusion up to me being a dumb American. The cebollitas were great, the frijoles weren't my favorite but can't complain about having them as a side, and the tortillas (ample portion!!) were good. It was a little unclear whether you were meant to eat the components separately or assemble tacos - I would have assumed the former as of course if you wanted tacos you would probably...order tacos. Again, though, dumb American. The star of the show as to be expected was the barbacoa. It was heavenly, and the consommé was so rich I was basically drinking it off my plate. The only negative I'd say is that their salsas (one red, one green) were just okay. The red definitely packs a punch so use it sparingly. To be frank though the barbacoa is so good that it's definitely not needed at all. Would go back for sure!
