I was visiting the Quad cities and my friends love this restaurant, so we went for lunch. The staff is helpful and informative. The menu has quite a few tasty choices but I didn't see enchiladas Rojas (with beef), so I settled on the flautas platter. My friends got an assortment of tacos and a burrito. We all enjoyed it everything is pretty tasty, but its made with dark meat (tough teat if you're a white meat only chap). Now, the star of the show was actually the horchata, it was absolutely delicious! I ended up taking one to go and adding a few shots of espresso and made a horchata latte rivaling the one I drank in Cali. Only issue was the credit card machine was down, so we had to dip into our cash stash. Hopefully it will be fixed by the time my friends go back.

Barbacoa. Mmmm. That's what this place means to me. Ever since I watched Chef stories on Netflix, I've been trying out barbacoa at every Mexican restaurant but nothing lived up to my bloated imagination, but this place omg!! There's burritos, and other stuff too people but barbocoa is the deal, let me tell you. It's this awesome lamb/beef dish that's cooked for eight hours with all its fatty goodness and rich taste. Also, the corn tortillas tasted exquisite and I've never tasted more delish tortillas before, try it you will know what I mean. Chips were so fresh and the sauces were perfect! I also tried their Puerco en salsa Roja which is pork tips curry with rice, beans and tortillas. So yum!! Right amount of spice. Horchata was a wholesome good drink, loved it. Overall I love everything about this place - service, food, nice ambience. I could give more stars if I could!

We ate lunch at El Mexicano recently and while I enjoyed my huarache, I had serious food envy over my companion's carnitas. They looked and tasted very good and, as I later learned, are a restaurant specialty. I'll definitely come back to El Mexicano! Not only to check items off my shopping list, but for another cheap and tasty lunch (and carnitas).

While the parents were a little put off by the somewhat divey style (it's a little place attached to an equally small market), we were invited to sit down in a warm, sunlit booth, and they immediately loosened up. First, the service was friendly and prompt. Second, the chips and salsa (served in squeeze bottles) were crunchy and warm; the two salsas were fabulous. Some of the group thought that the verde was too spicy, but I thought it was just right. The horchata was sweet and delicious, and we were offered a refill, to my delighted surprise. We ordered three of the taco platters--3 tacos each with rice and beans--and two of the tamales platters--3 tamales each also with rice and beans. We tried the steak, chorizo, and carnitas. These came quickly and they did not disappoint. The only negative thing I could say is that the carnitas, likely due to being prepared in large quantities for the daily special, was a little dry. I suggest getting it topped with the cheese. The chorizo was my favorite, topped with cilantro and onion. It wasn't excessively greasy, but was still moist and incredibly flavorful. The tamales were topped with gooey cheese, sour cream, lettuce and tomatoes. I don't want to overlook the rice and refried beans. I usually don't touch these ubiquitous items, but here it was hard to resist. The beans were creamy and topped with mini-morsels of queso fresco. And the rice was well seasoned. Everyone was blown away with their meal. For entirely too much food (we ordered five entrees for four petite people, and we took a full meal home in leftovers) and two horchatas, we got out of their for $25 plus tip. So this was most assuredly worth the price. In a nutshell: fantastic food, underpriced, with friendly service.

I stumbled across this very well hidden place and walked in not even knowing if they served food or if it was just an ice cream place. And man, and I glad I did. Their menu was very ambitious and outstanding with many creative twists on Mexican fare. I ordered the Barbacoa Tacos and was expecting the run of the mill quality tacos. Again, I was wrong. Way way exceeded my expectations. The tacos were prepared barbacoa style and fried in beef consomme I believe, plenty of melted cheese and well seasoned meat inside, topped with a sauce and pickled onion, with neatly prepared sides of their house made hot sauce, chopped fresh cilantro, and diced onion. The plate was artfully decorated with drops of avocado puree, with a fresh lime wedge on the side. And on top of that there was a bowl of hot beef consomme for dipping/sipping. The plate looked beautiful, and the food lived up to the presentation. Delicious, and the best tacos I've had in this area, and I've had them at a lot of places. Decor is simple, not fancy at all, and a bit odd as the restaurant shares a slice of the small storefront maybe 8 ft wide, while the La Michoacana Ice Cream business takes up the rest of the location. They even have different colored booths divided down the middle of the room. A bit strange. And the location doesn't do justice to the amazing food. They also serve breakfasts which sound fantastic. I believe they also deliver through one of the delivery services. The place is also a coffee shop and features some very nice looking pastries as well. Check out their Facebook page for latest updates to hours, menu, etc. I am definitely going back and highly recommend this place to anyone looking for some unique and beautifully prepared Mexican food. The owner is a culinary school graduate and it certainly shows. So surprising to find this level of quality so hidden away in such a small place shared with another business. I'm confident that once more people experience this food, the word of mouth will certainly get around.
