I came to Maria's Mexican Restaurant with my wife, and if I'm being real, we got into an argument while we were there over her garden gnomes. Earlier this year we were honestly on the brink of divorce, so the tension was very real walking in. But the food was so good it completely disarmed us. By the time we were halfway through the meal, we were laughing and remembering why we chose each other in the first place. The food and ambience of the place genuinely reminded me of the first time we kissed when we met in Vegas at the Tuscany Hotel and Casino. A humble restaurant in Old Town. I love that they have vegetarian enchiladas (with potatoes)! We really enjoyed the warm tortilla chips and the salsa was medium spice, which is a plus. Heat is the spice of life! I also indulged in the queso dip and I'm not sorry. Past reviews indicate issues with the service, but we had none (and this was our second visit). Since I moved to the Quad Cities in January 2007, I've tried to find tasty and more authentic Mexican food. Quad Citians seem to favor the always busy La Flama, Azteca and Los Agaves, which aren't very authentic, have middling food and their menus are interchangeable. You've eaten at one of them, you've eaten at them all and all entrees taste very similar. Maria's is none of that. It's never crowded, there are no roaming off-key mariachi bands, the food is home made to order and it's authentic as you can get in the Quad Cities. Also, the menu is unique. You'll find the staples, but you'll also find things like tacos al pastor, menudo and mole chicken enchiladas. Maria's salsa is tasty and pretty spicy. I've heard some people complain that service is slow, and it's certainly not as fast as the other places I've mentioned. Sit back, have a margarita, relax and know that you're going to get tasty homemade Mexican food. Thus far, however, my favorite Mexican food in the Quad Cities is from El Mexicano, which is much less expensive than Maria's and most other Mexican restaurants in the QC. read more

Some items on the menu are a little over priced, but then again i like my mexican food cheap. Their tacos al pastor were fantastic though. Enchiladas were good not great. The food at Maria's is good, but not as good as I remember it from two years ago. The salsa was too spicy. We ordered margaritas but there was no salt on the rims. My boyfriend said his blended margarita had chunks of ice. Mine was on the rocks - tasty but missed having salt. My boyfriend also asked for no beans witj his entree, but she brought beans anyway. The beans are a bit runny and went into the rice and fajita items, which is what he did not want. Chips were tasty but just one small bowl. For 2 margaritas, an order of three tacos, and a fajita entree, the bill was over 30 dollars. I am disappointed and probably will choose another of the excellent choices available in the Quad Cities next time I want authentic Mexican food. read more

Lived all over the U.S. and beyond and Maria's is one of the best, most authentic, Mexican restaurants I have ever encountered. I return to Maria's from my home in Colorado just to eat the Carne de Puerco. If you've never had this dish you are missing out. Maria's flour tortillas go great with this dish to scoop up the gravy. Stopped today at 11:15AM, only people there. Waitress was on phone the entire time we were there. She took drink order while on phone. No plates, never asked about pop refill or refill of chips n salsa. Delivered our cheese crispy appetizer that tasted like strong chemicals . Could not eat it! She brought our tacos (still on phone) but never came back to refill soda or chips. I had to go to counter for the bill. I told her that the cheese crispy was horrible so she said she'd check the oil & that it was her first day of work after being out one week. She didn't charge us for the appetizer. Fantastic chimichanga! It was a special that they had. I would recommend asking if you can get the Al Pastor meat with whatever dish you get. It really is a delicious flavor. I also like the salsa that they have-the spice is just enough tantalization for your tongue to eat more chips and not enough to stop you. Try it out. i know the reviews here aren't great but i promise that it is authentic. read more

When it comes to Mexican food Maria's is quite average. The menu is extensive and in my experience the food is never bad. The chips were very good though the tamales tasted a little off but the enchiladas are good, though very mild and maybe even bland but not off putting by any means. read more

This was a very disappointing experience compared to a year ago. Arrived at 6:30 pm on Friday, April 12, 2019 to introduce a QCA newcomer to authentic Mexican....ordered small combo plates...food was delivered to our table within 5 minutes of ordering, nothing was hot--appeared they'd served us food that was sitting at room temp, not even the plate was hot. Restaurant was not closing for 2 1/2 hours-- no excuse for low quality, cold meals. Will not return. read more

After seeing a friend check in here on facebook all of the time, I Ate here for the first time a week ago. Usually I 99% of the time go w/ steak tacos. I went with beef tacos on a hard shell. Very good, the chips and salsa alone were worth the trip. I will be back My friend got the small combo and agreed that it was good. We both almost ordered 3 tacos to go for later, but decided that was being just a bit greedy. The place was a bit dark and shabby. Horrible!!!!! The food was awful, service was bad/slow. Ordered a plain bean burrito for my 4 year old and they made a beef one and it was 10 minutes later than the adults food. Anyone who has kids knows better than that! My mother had a taco salad and it was all lettuce with only HOT sauce as an option for moisture, which was too spicey for her, so it ended up dry and the bowl tasted like lard. We all left with a horrible flavor in our mouth and an achy stomach and headache...not sure if food was past expiration. read more

Worst place for service in all of the QCA! Their food quality has been on a steady decline for years. The restaurant itself is filthy. The last time I tried to do business with them I called in a to go order an hour before their closing time and by the time I got there 15 minutes later they had locked their doors 45 minutes early. This was the worst mexican food I have had in my life! I am not a picky eater but this place was really unacceptable! I ordered enchiladas and they were very obviously made in a microwave, the tortillas were chewy and the sauce on top had turned into a paste from the microwave. It was so bad I couldn't even it it, I sent it back and just ate chips for dinner! My fiance got tacos, which weren't quite as bad but the tortillas were microwaved. We also ordered a cheese and chorizo dip to go with our chips as an appetizer but recieved it only a few minutes before we got the rest of the food and to add insult to injury the dip had a hair in it! After I realized that the food had been microwaved we started listening to the kitchen and sure enough, we could hear the beep of a microwave in the background. Overall the food was horrible and the service was slow, I would never eat here again or recomend it to anyone else!! read more

This used to be our favorite place for Mexican when we lived there. Visited at least once a week. We were back in the Quad Cities for a wedding this summer and our family decided to go there for dinner. We called about noon and got the voice mail and left a message that there would be 20 of us coming in at 6pm. No one called us back to confirm I left my number. So again at about 4:30 we called again and spoke to someone and he said they would do the best they could to accommodate us. Well when we all got there we were told we should have made a 3 day in advance reservation!! Our family had gone there with a group many times and we were never told this. The food was lousy, the service was poor and slow, and not very pleasant to us. The waitress said she was stressed out and that we would have to be patient and we were more than that. No one was served at the same time which was ok, but some food was old and had been frozen and not very hot when served. We did tip her well and there was someone there that could have been helping her as we were the only people there with the exception of one other couple. All she did was make a margarita and then stood and watched. We are not coming back, again when we visit and a lot of the family lives there and will not return either..... read more
