If you are looking for Tex-Mex, or SoCal Mexican, or Mexican food, this is not that. This is Hawaii…read moreIsland, so 'Mexican food' is similar, but different in major areas. Same would be corn tortillas, tomato based salsa, delicious gaucamole.
Chips and salsa are not complimentary, listed as an appetizer. We ordered gaucamole which was a scoop plopped down on top of the chips, which was a bit messy, would have preferred it to be in a separate bowl to allow dipping rather than digging chips out from under the gaucamole.
Differing would be chili verde is with tomatillos, refried beans are mostly whole and only partially pureed, and not cooked in ham or lard - all the seasoning is very mild. The tomatillo salsa has some heat, but that's about it.
My wife had the poblano pepper, corn tortilla tacos. Nicely served (3) upright in side-by-side slots, but it was just chicken, a couple slices of poblano, some melted cheese over the top, no other veggies. Very bland, meat-heavy tacos.
I had chicken fajitas, on the menu listed as 'non-sizzling', meaning the meat and peppers cooked on a flat top or skillet and plated. They were good, very lightly seasoned the small warm corn tortillas were delicous. The rice had the usual reddish color but no other spices that we could tell - very bland - as were the beans as per above.
For dessert my wife had a sweet tamale...yes, I know...she liked it but I didn't care for it. Corn flavor came through, but sweet - maybe worth a try for more than one to sample. I had the flan which was pretty solid and topped with carmel sauce. Different, but a good difference.
It is located upstairs (elevator or stairs) above a bar in a pedestrian shopping center, so you no one would stumble upon it by accident. Great staff, very helpful, willing to adjust to requests, small bar with about 10-12 tables.
As long as you go without expecting 'the same I'm used to back home', and open to variations on the familiar, you'll enjoy at least parts of your meal...I'd go back, my wife said it was some of the worst Mexican food she's ever had. Low-veggie presence, mild seasoning, but focus on the friends you're with and the fact you are on the big Island!
