Every time I'm in Vicksburg I fall in love with her harder and find more things to love about her. This time it was a few things but Lorelei Books tops the list. I'm a huge lover of bookstores like this. I love to support independently and locally owned anything... but books are one of my favorite things so I'm pretty passionate about a local and independently owned bookstore. And by pretty passionate I mean way over the top, want to hug and kiss the owners, profess my undying love passionate. This little bookstore features a carefully selected mix of local authors and regionally highlighted books. It's sleek and airy and well lit. You'll also find notecards, postcards, poetry journals and a warm welcoming vibe here. Their logo though, is what really got me. A mermaid reading a book. Hello, adorable. If you fall in love with that logo as hard as I did, there are totes and tees printed with her on them for sale here as well. Sigh. Support this wonderful little place please! read more

My wife is a voracious reader.... and I knew I would have to return from Vicksburg with a book. Loralei's was the perfect place to go. They had a couple shelves full of books by local authors right up front.... like they knew I was coming. I also bought a book about the blues, being that I was just footsteps from 61 Highway.... a major artery of blues history in Mississippi. Be sure to spend some time talking with the very nice lady that runs the store. Highly recommend!! read more

If you were making a movie and needed a set for a quaint small town bookstore, this would be your place. There are obviously not as many options here as the big box stores, but it is stocked with local authors, local topics, and just enough of great titles to make a visit. The owner was very helpful during our visit as I picked up a book on the blues and Haunted Vicksburg. There is also a resident cat that roams around the books that adds to the cozy atmosphere. read more

Really beautiful, bright bookstore. Small, but carefully curated collection of books. It looks like there's a nice courtyard out back, I'm not sure if it's open to customers. There are two cats who frequent the bookstore, Bette Davis and Coco Chanel. Super cute! The owner is really friendly and chatty and will likely strike up a conversation with you. These sorts of bookstores don't exist that much anymore, but they should, so you should go and support them! read more

Amazing customer service in this beautiful, cozy historic building! The owner was wonderful with my children. She read to them, let them feed the goldfish in her beautiful outdoor space, and let them help her water the flowers when my preschooler started to throw a fit as we were leaving. We (me and my girlfriend) went by Vicksburg on our way south and took a stroll around the old city centre. We found this great little bookstore which felt really welcoming and cozy with a fine selection of books and two lazy cats lying in the sofa. We both found great books on our short visit in the store and also had a nice conversation with the owner about blues and the civil war. I strongly recommend a visit when you're in Vicksburg. read more

I happened upon this shop while playing hooky from work one Wednesday afternoon. While browsing the small (but really well thought out) selection, the owner struck up a conversation. We made small talk about what each of had been reading, and she recommended Mieville's "Kraken" (which is excellent, by the way). When I mentioned in passing that I wasn't a fan of poetry, instead of arguing with me about my opinion, she offered to read me a poem that she liked. I accepted, and listened. Honestly, I can't remember the poem or poet, but the graciousness of the owner, and the carefully selected and placed books stick out in my mind. I'll certainly return to Lorelei. read more

We stopped in Vicksburg on a cross-country road trip and our visit to Lorelei's was a highlight. The store is small so the owner has to be selective and she has hit a home run. The books by local authors and of local interest are a highlight as well as the entire fiction and history sections. This clearly is a labor of love and I so appreciated that this store was available to residents and tourists alike. Needless to say, I came away with some treasures. This was one of the first places I found in my new hometown, and I'm so glad I did! She is super friendly and helpful! She special ordered a book that my youngest kiddo destroyed, it was in the store within a few days. What a gem this bookstore is. I live in the Washington DC area but am fortunate enough to be involved with some cultural heritage projects in Vicksburg and Laura Weeks, the owner and her bookstore are a much valued resource for all things literary and historical and I'm not talking about things just about Vicksburg. The store has a well curated selection of volumes that covers all literary genres. And if what you need isn't on the shelf she"ll have a copy of whatever book you need in your hands or mailbox promptly.
