Amazing Fried Fish and Chips ! It's such a great taste and I feel like going there again and again.

Food was excellent. We had cod which was battered beautifully. Crispy and not too oily. Fries were home cut and also very good. Excellent onion rings. Even the tartar sauce and Cole slaw tasted freshly made. Don't expect beautiful ambiance. The restaurant itself maybe a little tired but it was clean. Service was prompt. Went in just before 5pm, the restaurant was bustling, everyone was smiling enjoying their food -- the wait staff were super Happy & Friendly. Lord Elgin is a darker ambiance with just paper placemats showing the places to go in the area. It felt a little like stepping back to a time when things were just simple & so very good The food was amazing Fish & Chips done the proper way , both so Crispy with no residue of the oil. I had Halibut it cost $22.50 for one piece and home cut fries but to be fair the servings were large. Also had the coleslaw a small side cost $1.50 and it was awesome had a real vinegar flavor Have to say the Tartar sauce which they make fresh was delicious as well. Found this gem from Yelp while on a trip to Sauble Beach. I ordered the cod and shrimp fish and chips with had a good amount of cod and 6 shrimp over a heaping plate of French fries. The fried were perfectly crisp and golden and the fish was moist and delicious. The shrimp were served butterflied and breaded with the perfect tangy seafood sauce. I love how the table has its own big tube of tartar sauce so you don't have to ever ask for more. I wish this place was closer to me... although it's probably best for my waistline that it is not! read more

I've been here many times with my family or friends for the All You Can Eat Fish N Chips (haddock) on Monday or Tuesday. The pieces aren't super big, but it doesn't matter because it's all you can eat. I had 8 pieces the last time I was there. You can also get french fries, or baked potato (if you want to be a bit healthier), and it also comes with coleslaw. If it's in the summer and you are going around dinner time, expect to wait. You might wait around 45 minutes if you are a larger group. I would say get there earlier, or maybe try at lunch, if that is an issue for you. They have lots of other seafood on the menu besides fish n chips, and I'm sure they are good too. The fish n chips are really quite good and well worth the price. (13.99 for the all you can eat, or 10.50 without). Though you can get fish like halibut for a slightly larger price. I highly recommend this place, as everyone in my family or people I've taken there have loved it. read more

My wife and I make a habit of coming here once a cottage season and we love it for so many reasons! The price is reasonable, the food is good and we love the decor and ambience -- it's unapologetically unassuming decor and small town feel just feels authentic and endearing. It's always bustling when we're in there. This place is a local gem and a place to be treasured -- for sure. Both of us had a one piece battered with fried shrimp. Everything from the sharp vinegary coleslaw right down to the ketchupy cocktail sauce is classically on point! Love the tartar sauce in a squeeze bottle at the table! I really wanted to love this place. I treat myself to fish and chips only a few times a year and was really excited, after moving recently to the area, to be near a place that was so acclaimed. First, the hostess who sat me (maybe was just having a bad day) made me feel like my choice to show up for lunch there had just ruined her whole week. A grouchy hostess is never a nice way to start a meal. My server showed up promptly and was really pleasant. Brought a pitcher of ice water that gets left on the table which I really like. She took my order (haddock and chips) and after a short wait my food arrived. I hesitate to give 3 stars for only trying one dish but while the breading on the fish is perfect, the fish itself was dry. The fries are fresh cut and cooked really well but weren't salted when they came out of the fryer. It made for just an ok meal. The kicker was when I went to the counter to pay, I got to listen to two other staff members gossiping and talking smack about a customer (smaller town, sounded like they used to know her) who just left. If it were just a food thing I probably would have given it another shot before reviewing but the staff, aside from my server, makes me not want to return. read more

My entirely family arrived to experience "one of the best fish and chips in Canada" after a long day spent cottaging in nearby Sauble Beach. The place was lined up out the door, but we were given a buzzer and entertained the two small children in our party in the parking lot. The wait was acceptable, at around 15 minutes for a party of 7. Entering, I saw one of the most exciting signs I've ever seen in a fish and chip shop "It's ALL YOU CAN EAT night". We ordered almost immediately after being seated in the no frills dinning room, and our food was quick to arrive. We all ordered the All You Can Eat haddock and chips, and received a plate with 2 pieces of fish and a good size serving of chips (everyone except the 4 year old at the table who had a grilled cheese, which was totally good for $3). Chowing down, our waitress came back pretty quickly to see if we needed another round. Perfectly timed to us finishing our fish, she came back with another piece of fish for each of us. And then once more (and maybe with some more chips for the table too). The fish tasted fresh, it was light and not too dry. The batter was crisp and golden, and not too thick. The chips were satisfyingly tasty. Not the best fish and chips I've ever had, but worthy of 5 stars for the overall experience. "All you can eat" happens Monday & Tuesday from 11am to close and might just be the worth the drive to Port Elgin. I'll be back next summer. read more

We drive by and saw a full parking lot and tons of people going in so we had to come back. We were camping nearby and decided to try on the way home. The food was delicious - the restaurant itself is nice and nautically decorated. The service was great - very quick and polite. The restaurant wasn't too busy at lunch which was good. We have heard about this place for a long time and this summer we finally made the trek to check it out. Even during a pandemic the service was well organized and the food amazing. Halibut and chips and a short drive to the lakefront to eat - what could be better? The food was some of the best fish and chips we've had. Crispy batter that is not greasy and fries that are crispy on the outside and tender inside. I have been going to Lord Elgin since I was a kid and haven't had it in 5 years at least. Went back today to see if it has stayed the same, and it is still the best fish and chips I have ever had. Halibut fish and chips is the go to. Nice size portion, batter is crispy, fish is thick, juicy and fresh. No fishy taste to it. They bring you a big bottle of tartar sauce so there is no risk of running out. The fries are the least delicious part of the meal but that is because the fish is just so good. Good Friday we stopped for lunch driving through town. This is the second time we have been to this restaurant, ... once a year or two ago. I wanted the seafood platter but when I asked if the seafood was breaded in house she said yes, ...then came back and admitted it was a pre-breaded frozen product. I then changed my order to the Cod Dinner. One large and one small piece of cod that was actually pretty good but nothing real special, but I admit that the batter was good. Unfortunately the fries were not as fresh as they should be. It was also supposed to come with coleslaw but we never saw any. Barely warm fries on top of not too bad fish with a chunk of lemon is all we got. I have had better out of the oven for a lot less $$. When she cleared the plates we declined dessert of coffee but then we waited for quite a while for the bill and then were told to go to the cash to pay. We were charged for the much more expensive halibut "in error". She did refund over $10 for this "mistake". Service was not particularly good. There were three waitresses and a bus person working and by the time we finished we were the only customer in the restaurant. There should not have been wait at all for the bill. They claim to be have been voted the "second best fish and chips in Canada". I do not see this personally. This visit was certainly not good and the previous one was not outstanding either. read more

Wonderful Food! Decor is nothing to write home about but we were there for some good fish so the decor didn't matter much. It was clean and homey. The all-you-can-eat Haddock was superb! Large pieces of fish, nice light batter and cooked to perfection. No grease on the plate at all. The kitchen knows what they're doing! Coleslaw wasn't what we care for, but we're pretty picky coleslaw eaters. The Seafood Chowder was good but maybe more fish and less potatoes, but still good. If we want Fish and Chips this is where we'll come. Our server, Teaghan, was jolly on the spot. Very nice and helpful. After she explained the take home fish I ended up taking home a bag of their already battered Haddock. read more

The deep fried halibut is mediocre, but the chips are good; which is important because there is a lot more chips than fish. I find the fish portions excessively small for the price. I have also ordered the grilled halibut and the portion size borders on even more ridiculously small. Also, both times I ordered the grilled halibut it was overcooked and dry as a bone. If you go, err on the side of deep fried fish to detract from the overcooking. The service in the dining room is always excellent at least from any of the regular servers I have had. The take-out service is slow. I personally think the great reviews here are based on the vacation effect. You are relaxed, happy and with family, so everything you have tastes good. But, objectively speaking, this is not outstanding fish n chips. It is OK fish n chips which is expensive. To address the "The Best in Canada" silliness, the story is that a few years ago someone from Canadian Living Magazine (goodness knows who & why) came through Saugeen Shores declaring this, that and the other thing "The Best in Canada". There was the best butter tart one place and best this and best that. It was all a lot of nonsense. Back to the fish....If you want fresh fish, find a more gourmet restaurant serving local whitefish. Beware of lineups here and the very loud unpleasant dining room on summer weekends. read more

The halibut fish and chips here are to die for! The fish to batter ratio is just right, giving the fish a thin but crisp and tasteful outer layer. I can't think of any other place that comes close! I should add that their homemade tartar sauce is just to die for, way better than that low grade stuff other places give you which come straight from the packet. Would rate this place six stars just for giving you unlimited tartar sauce that comes in a BOTTLE. YES I SAID BOTTLE. Will update my review next time I go back and take part in their famous all-you-can eat fish n chips specials offered on Saturday, Mondays, and Tuesdays. read more

Went here a few weeks ago based on the stunning reviews on Yelp and brought my brother-in-law (born and raised in England) to test this place; however, I was a little disappointed. We ordered take-out from the restaurant so I can't really comment on the overall service but from that portion of the restaurant, they were attentive and our large order (six orders of cod and chips, with four extra pieces of fish, and two soups) only took about 15 - 20 minutes. The chips were done well but the batter seemed a bit on the heavier side. The seafood chowder was okay as well but were a bit on the pricier side for two small containers. Overall, it was comparable to other Fish and Chip restaurants that I've eaten at back in Toronto, so nothing spectacular. read more
