While visiting family in Newark, I found this meat market. Good reviews, busy street, I made the effort to go in. Sad to say, it was not a good day (Saturday1pm) since there was not much left to choose. $100 later we went to a bbq with high expectations on the quality off the meat we were bringing. Sadly, I was disappointed again; the quality of the meat was no better than what I can find at the average supermarket where I would pay half as much. We were visiting friends in NJ, so we decided to make a pit stop to pick up morcilla (rice and blood sausage) linguica and a side of the home made smoked bacon- as a side note lopes Sausage company is a solid family own business. The linguica has a smokey taste, usually we added to stews ir when when make yellow rice and sausage. Best portugués butcher in the area. The ratio of fat to pork is just perfect. Their bacon is thick cut, you can trim it to size depending on what you are using it for, this is perfect for me. I was eating their sausages long before i knew they were made and sold in Newark. You can walk around and find yourself eye-to-eye with a whole pig for roasting or suckling; a skinned rabbit for . . . well, I don't know, whatever people do with entire rabbits; pig's feet, cheeks and jaws; goat ribs and legs (you can also order a whole goat if you wish); and thick-slab, house-smoked bacon. I saw whole pig heads and carious cuts of meats. I end up buying about $60 worth of sausages and bacon so i think i am good for a good while. The staff is friendly, ladies at the register are always ready to answer questions. I was told they ship anywhere in the USA. The minimum order is at least $10. Thats a great option since i travel from Bayside queens to Newark to buy their famous smoked sausages. Save me money on tolls and gas. Shopping here, certainly is worth my trip especially if i am running errands and visiting family. Parking is difficult along walnut avenue, so always a block ahead near the park, where the odds for find a parking spot are better. read more

Big and busy store. Three butchers behind the counter this Saturday. Went a little slower than I liked waiting - lots of conversation with their regular customers from the neighborhood. I noticed that they were trimming meats very well. I was hoping to find some lamb sausage, but no. So I sampled some pork sausages. Italian style and Brazilian style. The texture on both were a little on the chunky side. Brazilian was a little bland. Italian had more fennel than I like. I noticed a lot of salted cuts, which must be an old world thing, when people did not have cold storage. Prices are cheap enough. Good place to visit if you drive to the Ferry Street area for a meal. read more

I purchased 4 varieties of sausage. My husband, a chef, said, "That guy knows what he is doing. The Brazilian chicken sausage is the best I have ever had." Since my in-laws love Portuguese Sausage(wife's Grandma was from Portugal), I decided to make the dash out to Newark to buy them some Linguica and some other sausage(forgot the name) to surprise them while visiting from Texas. I arrived around 5pm on a Wed afternoon and they weren't busy. The butcher hardly spoke any English but was really efficient and direct to the point. The cashier was helpful and even offered to ship to Texas if my in-laws liked it(@$4.99 per lb + UPS pricing). They loved it and I did too. It was fresh, tastety, and just plain delicious. The best Linguica i've had. They even took back the leftovers to Texas. Its a less than 15 min walk from the Newark PATH station(Newark Penn) and its a fairly safe neighborhood so when you visit Ironbound, stop here for a different take on sausage. read more

Blessed to have a butcher like this so close to home. My go-to for meats and sausage...they also carry quail and other assorted products. It can get extremely busy specially on weekends so be prepared to take a number and wait in line. There might also be a small language barrier if you don't speak Portuguese (like myself) so keep a close eye to make sure you're getting what you asked. read more

I have been coming to Lopes for some time now. My only gripe with them is that they never carry lamb....something I'm trying to convince the owner to start carrying. However, because this is a Portuguese oriented establishment, pork, beef and chicken are king...and these guys know their pork, beef and chicken. Located on Walnut St., just a few blocks off McCarter Highway (Rte. 21), Lopes is a family-run sausage manufacturer specializing in smoked Portuguese sausages including chouriço, chorizo, linguiça, morcelas, morcilla, and salpicao. If you are not familiar with these products, you can sample them free in their retail butcher shop. They also make smoked bacon, ham hocks, etc. This is a pretty big operation, in fact, the owner takes immense pride in the fact that he sells 50 or 60 lbs. of his products directly to the White House (yes, the one in Washington, DC) every month. i had an opportunity to tour the whole facility, including the huge smoker rooms, where the products are cooked and cured entirely by hot smoke generated from apple wood sawdust. The retail butcher shop is open to the public Wednesday through Saturday, and stocks a full range of fresh beef, pork ,and poultry products in addition to the sausages. The place is immaculately clean, and all the meat here is of very high quality. if you need to pick up a gutted, whole baby pig, this is the place. A great culinary resource. read more

My family has gone to Lopes for many years. It's where we've always bought our portuguese sausages. So after recently moving into the neighborhood with my boyfriend, I decided to take him to Lopes to get his fresh perspective. We visited Lopes on 05/21/14 later in the afternoon and were the only patrons in the shop. The shop was as spacious and clean as I remembered, great first impression! My boyfriend asked the butcher if he had any suggestions for a good grilling steak. Thinking perhaps he had a really good cut that he'd recommend or a good bargain on a specific cut. Unfortunately, the butcher didn't answer him. I asked him in Portuguese if he suggests getting the Ribeye steaks for grilling, he answered "Sim", which means "yes" and then quickly asked us how many we wanted in Portuguese while pulling the meat to the counter. Obviously, he didn't speak English which was a great disappointment for my boyfriend, who does not speak Portuguese. Nor did he have any suggestions or valuable input when asked in Portuguese. We felt rushed and confused. None of the produce was labeled so we didn't even know what other options were available or what grade of beef we were looking at. We wound up getting two ribeye steaks. The butcher never asked us how thick we wanted them, just cut them and weighed them. We were both a bit in shock as to the service. We grilled the steaks that same day, medium rare, and I can't say the beef was very tender at all, it was tough and chewy. Not sure if this was just miscommunication or poor service but we're currently looking into trying other butchers for our steaks. My suggestion is that if you're looking for Portuguese sausages, try Lopes! If you want to actually have a conversation with your butcher about a cut of beef and you don't speak portuguese, try someplace else. read more

Lets see how should I begin. Lets start with the sausages, they have maybe 9-10 kinds of home made Portuguese and Spanish style sausages available. They are some of the best made charcuterie in the area, plus at 4.95 I think a pound it is bargain to the poorly made vacuum sealed imitations you can find at other gourmet stores. They are also a full service butcher, service is slow but that is because they will prepare your cuts of meat any way you like. Chicken; only whole chicken for sale but they will prepare it any way you want, quartered, deboned, supremes all done with a smile. Plus if you are looking for things like tripe, pigs feet, whole pigs, they have it. The prices are higher then your local super market but then again you get what you pay for, plus the prices are way lower then Lobel's or any other NYC butcher. I go here often, just be prepared to wait a few minutes but people are generally friendly and happy. Don't be put off by the fact that everyone is speaking Portuguese because I have never had a problem getting exactly what I need with english only. read more

I grew up in the Newark area and now that I'm not around here anymore I'm missing this place badly. I usually take 2-3, hour and a half trips here a year to stock up on chouriço and other sausages just because it's the best. I can't cook caldo verde with the linguiça they sell at shop rite...it's just too bland. I NEED Lopes's linguiça or I don't make it at all! read more
