Who can argue with free peanuts???
    Virgil G.

I've just eaten dinner. Kridz left to go play pool at Amvets. I walk down the street to Jupiter's downtown. I enter. I have a whiskey. I'm talking to friends. Suddenly, Joe Fun, from out of nowhere says "Hey VOIGIL, you want to go to Tolono to Loose Cobra". My initial reaction: "Hell no! why would I want to go to Tolono?" He says "ok". Then I'm like, wait... I want to have an adventure. It's been a while since I've done something out of my comfort zone (which consists of about 7 bars in downtown Champaign). I ask when he's coming back. He says he has rehearsal for the band in Urbana at 9, so by 9. I think... WTF? Lets go. I get into his car. He needs new struts, every time he hits a bump or a pothole, there's a rattling noise that comes from the front drivers side tire area. We proceed the 10-ish miles down 45 to the thriving metropolis of Tolono. I ask, where's this place again? He says, it's in blah blah blah, right next to the library. I think I may have been there once before, to play pool, a long time ago. As we are driving, we go past the roller rink. I toss the idea out of an adult fun time, with Joe fun! We consider the idea. Rent the roller rink. Get a dj in. Get beer in there (one time special permit possibly, if they don't have a liquor license). And then, have joe fun's adult fun time. He mentions doing something for charity, because Joe is awesome like that. We wonder how many people we could get signed up for this thing, he's like "20?" and i'm like 200! If we get the right people involved, we can pack the place. It could be fun. We get there, I have not been there. It's across the street from that place. It's not at the old rademakers either. It's not at that tiny place next to the train tracks either. It's right next to the library (I think it's the library). We go in. The bartender is Matt Talbot from the band Hum. He may also own the place. There are 2 pinball machines, one is the Sopranos game, I think the other was the kiss game (i'm probably wrong on that). There are devil boxes in the back. There is a wide open space in the middle, where apparently, Tolono's guitar circle sets up and plays. That or just someone with a steel guitar decided to show up around 8. I go to do outside things, and think to myself, geez, when was the last time I left CU? The answer would be xmas, going up to my sister's in Lockport. I should really get out more. I need more adventures. I am out a lot. And I always have a good time, I spread my time out between multiple places... I just don't go too far away from those places. The bar has a nice liquor selection. It's not the variety you will get at Seven Saints, but there's enough good things to tide you over. When everyone else at the bar is drinking BMC, you can have a decent whiskey and not look like the pretentious douche at the bar. But, don't be surprised if the bartender (in this case Matt) thinks "it's been a while since I've tried that one" and pours everyone else in the place a taste of that beverage (and then you get a bigger splash in your glass than the rest got). There are hundreds of records against the wall. If you go through them, you will get lost, but you will probably find something rare and good. He'll be playing something when you go in. I'm sure if you looked through, he'd play whatever you picked. There's a stage in the middle of the parking lot. Right in the middle. They do outside shows with various bands in the summer. The drinks are cheap. The sign says Beer... FANCY Beer. From the parking lot, in the heart of Tolono, you can look up and see the stars. I ask Joe what his band will be doing at coverup. He actually tells me. (No one else tells). He trusts me, I guess. He says "Katie perry". He shows me the shark costumes that someone will be wearing. We drive back. He drops me off without so much as even a kiss goodnight!

A cool little with a great vibe. The owner Matt is a great. I was highly impressed with their Margiritas and speciality drinks in general.

Located in scenic Thomasboro. Actually, located in the heart of scenic Thomasboro. This is a bar,…read morenot unlike any other bar you would find in a town that has but one or two bars. It's got that hint of musty water damage, that you will find in old buildings. A subtle je ne sais quoi, that just makes a small town bar be a small town bar. You can't put your finger on it, but why are they ... exactly what they are? Is it the NASCAR logos throughout the place? Is it the can or bottle of beer that they never sold, but got one bottle of (in this case, Kentucky Horse Piss) (oddly enough, I have an empty bottle of KHP on display with the rest of the bottles at Kridz). Is it the 3 logos? Is it the neon for bud light or miller lite? There's the exact same sights, sounds, smells, and feels of almost every other small town bar. Would I call it a "dive bar", no. For it to be that, there would have to be competition in the same town. This is just "small town bar". Comparing it to CU, yes, this is a dive. But there is no comparison to CU. THIS IS THOMASBORO!!! The prices here are fantastic. It's nearly cheaper to drink here than to drink at the house. Take cash, or use the ATM. Probably easier to just take cash. Go here, you will love it. You may not feel like you are completely welcome on your first visit, but strike up a conversation with the bartender, the next time you go in, it'll be your home bar. Including with the smell of your basement that is mildewed because your sump pump went out the last time that there was a hard rain and you had 3 inches in the basement.

I was feeling great until my meal and wold love my oney back as I didnt pay to get food poisoning ...$28 later UPDATE: I want to be fair in my review by letting you know that since writing this, I went into the establishment and was refunded my money without any trouble. I am keeping my rating at one star because I don't know if I will ever trust their food again, but I want to thank the person I spoke with at the bar for her kindness and understanding. I will still go back for a drink, but ordering food is out of the question.

One of my faves at Shae's is their fish bite platter. Two sides. Green beans and tater tots. Yum! lol Their cheese curds and other appetizers are very good too Salads and sandwiches to choose from. I'm going to order a 12-inch pizza to take home. I've ordered it once before, at the party mentioned above. If a 12" pizza is too much for you, you can get a smaller pie, but the thin crust starts @ 12" size. So I happily shared mine around. All those people loved it also! They have a Taco Tuesday and other specials. I definitely recommend going in and making you and your friends/family comfortable, whether it's to watch various sports on the LARGE tvs or relaxing with a nice meal. Take out is welcomed, and 3rd party deliveries will bring it to you if tonight is giving stay at home vibes. Enjoy!

Hubers is a townie bar, to be sure, but the best kind of townie bar: the staff is friendly, not surly, patient with noobs and the drinks are generous and cheap. They pour massive shots in tumbler glasses and offer big steins of domestic drafts for less than what a pint runs in Downtown Champaign. They serve food, which is stellar in its value, if not its uniqueness. Simple pub grub done well is the order of the day. They have a surprising variety of surprisingly good thin-crust personal pizzas for less than $4 and all the expected fried things. Popcorn is free and they will make more just for you. If I was serious about throwing darts, this is where I would come, as it is apparent they take it seriously at Hubers: there is an entire room dedicated solely to this and about 4 dozen trophies. There is ample parking in the rear, as well as a tiny semi-enclosed smoking area that is only a little bit less depressing than the smoking tanks at the Atlanta Airport. The decor inside is nothing special, but upon close inspection you will find echoes of the historic grocery that inhabited the structure in years past. An old-fashioned candy counter is at the front of the store and still in use. Hubers is a good place to watch sports, as while they do not have the biggest or newest TVs, they sure have a lot of them and are not shy about letting you tune in whatever suits you. The only reason I did not give this 5 stars is they do not have very many of the "fancy" microbrews or imports that just about every place in Chambana stocks these days, and any that they do carry are likely old. This is a liquor and domestic beer joint. Also, like any neighborhood/townie bar, there is an alkie or two that may pass through, and this is not the place to meet chicks, or at least not he kind of chicks that you want to brag about on the Internet.
