I hadn't been since they moved to the new location and have definitely been missing out. We were there right at open during the farmers market and there was an initial rush that died down after 15 or so minutes. The bartender was extremely friendly, helpful, and knowledgable about the products; answering some questions I had about proofing. It's in a great spot downtown right next to the farmers market with plenty of street parking. There are a few sidewalk tables but a nice open space inside. The inside doesn't allow dogs, however, due to their kitchen. Speaking of... The pizza was pretty good! I feel the most important part of any pizza is the crust and that was the best bit of theirs. The fresh ground flour adds a ton of flavor and they got a decent char on the bottom and rim. The prices weren't terrible and 1 pizza with some booze fed both of us. My only gripe is that they go heavy on the cheese so the (excellent) crust can't hold up to the weight and wetness. That's made a bit worse by they fact that they use a high-moisture mozzarella so there's a lot of grease that can soup the whole deal up. All in all they make fantastic spirits, service is great, and now have good pizza at a decent price. I think this may be my go to spot for meeting friends when I'm in Northfield. read more

This is a very interesting spot to visit. We were hungry for pizza and chose Loon Liquors as it was the closest to us. We are glad we did as the pizza is fantastic Neapolitan style pizza with high quality toppings on delicious dough. We loved "white" sausage pie and the pepperoni honey pies, both perfect versions of these classic pizzas. The bonus was the in-house liquor! We bought several bottles of gin and vodka that we look forward to sharing with friends! The team at Loon are eager to please and do nice and helpful. We can't wait to visit again! read more

Adding a new review since the new location and menu is pretty different. Let's start with the pizza since that's new. First, I'm obsessed with their CRUST! I am so often disappointed by pizza crust - but this one keeps me coming back for more! As a huge bonus, it's freshly milled organic wheat, so it's way healthier than your average crust and it tastes way better in my opinion. The sausage pizza and the dessert pizza are top-tier; each bite reminds me how much I love it. We didn't love the hot honey as much, there just really wasn't enough hot honey on it. Their drink menu got a lot smaller, but the drinks that are on it are delicious (at least of the ones we had). Huge props to Loon for also including some mocktails and NA options. So even though the pepperoni pizza didn't blow us away and I'm bummed at the limited cocktail options, I'm still giving it 5 stars because their sausage and dessert pizzas are easily my favorite pizza nearby. We decided to stop by tonight and were very impressed! The front counter staff was super friendly. My husband and I shared a pizza and a dessert pizza and eat had a drink it was around $50 with tip. At first i thought a little pricey but once we got the food i was not upset at all. Everything was so fresh and delicious! Great first experience here. Pizza was outstanding, crust was so good. We had the margarita, the peperoni hot honey, and the one with pesto. I hate pesto, so I didn't like that one, but the other two were fantastic. Staff was incredibly welcoming and provided us with tons of information about the place. What an intriguing little spot in Northfield! I had never been there before, but stopped through while on a circuit of businesses included in the MN Drink Passport (got mine at the State Fair). Despite having a *distinctive* smell (which I am told is a by-product of the production process) we had a great time sitting at a tiny corner table, hemmed in on all sides by barrels, sipping on spirits and doing the NYT crossword. I've been really excited about Loon Liquors expanding into pizza, and I've got to say -- they're off to a great start! I've always loved their drinks, so when I heard they were firing up a pizza oven, I couldn't wait to try it. As someone who's worked in pizza shops and still makes pies at home, I'm pretty picky -- and I was genuinely impressed. The flavor of their wheat crust is fantastic -- really unique and tasty. You can tell they're putting thought and care into what they're doing. If I had one or two small suggestions, I'd love to see the pizzas stretched just a bit thinner and cooked a touch longer, so the outer crust gets a little crispier and less doughy. But honestly, that's just fine-tuning -- the flavor and quality are already there. Overall, I think Loon Liquors is on to something special. Don't get discouraged if you drive down and do t see the place. It us hidden in the back corner of the industrial park. Once you get inside, Loon Liquors does not disappoint. We had barely bellied up to the bar and our server poured us a small sample of the seasonal liqueur, which happened to be cinnamon (and delicious). The bartenders were all very friendly and made great recommendations. I mentioned I like dill after looking at the dill martini, but ended up not ordering it. While waiting for our drinks to be made, I got another small sample of the dill aquavit. Wow, that was good too. Had a wonderful beverage and took some goodies home too. We stopped by Loon Liquors for lunch this weekend. It is a lovely open concept space with wood fire oven and friendly, happy staff! The pizza crust is excellent as is the sauce with a little red pepper kick to it. They grind their own flour and the toppings are locally sourced which really sets it a step above the rest. Nothing is typical, everything is a little unique including the fun drinks. It sits just a little off the main street, but don't miss it. It's a winner! read more

How have a not written a review for this place yet? I have been there a couple of times now and I really appreciate and enjoy the laid-back vibe of this place. Smells of liquor mash waft through the dimly lit space. There is a sign that says this place is structured like a speakeasy and it totally works. Now on to the drinks. There is a great menu with quite a bit of variety to pick from, a little bit of classic and a little bit of experimental. Each drink is made with either bourbon, gin, or vodka that is made in-house. The Old Fashioned is very good, but I would also suggest any of the other bourbon drinks. If you want to take something home with you, you can buy their products right at the distillery. Their coffee liquor is absolutely amazing - smooth and sweet with just a hint of vanilla and cocoa. This has become my go-to coffee liquor in my home bar. Whenever I am in Northfield and have an afternoon to spare, this is the place I will probably go to relax and unwind. read more

I love to support local businesses and we are so fortunate to have this local business open. They have an easy way to make reservations online and check in when you arrive. The entire process feels very safe and clean as your temperature is checked upon arrival and then you are seated. Table service is offered in the lounge and outside patio and all the tables are socially distanced with homemade sanitizer on the table. However, the best part is the tasting all the delicious cocktails. Depending on your preference of gin, rum, whiskey or vodka based drinks, they have one for you. I've been here once and it didn't disappoint. They give you a decent list of unique drinks to chose from. I was with 2 friends and we shared 4 drinks. Its a little hard to find since it's in a location you wouldn't expect but i kinda like that. Inside is decorated with an urban feel. The outside patio is slightly small but adorable. Loon Liquor has changed and Not for the better. When drive over an hour to come to Loon and now they don't have any of the amazing crafted cocktails we have told all our friends about. They still have drinks, but the old fashioned is now the size of a Dixie cup and expensive for the size. The vodka soda was good, but I came for the Fresh Blood or one of the other amazing drinks we knew this place for that are no longer available. This place used to be packed all the time, we were the only 4 in there at 5:30 on a Friday and now we know why. We are now telling our friends not to bother. We used to tell everyone we knew that the drive was worth it, but it really is not anymore. We will not be back either....so sad, one of our favorite places changed for the worst. read more

I had a serious case of FOMO after my significant other went to Loon Liquors without me then proceeded to rave for months about how amazing the cocktails were. I knew I had to get down there, and last weekend I finally did. LL opens at 2, and when you go in, the building feels sort of warehouse-ish. But as soon as you step into the cocktail room, it feels like you're in a completely different building. It's cozy, dimly lit, barrels everywhere, and the hardwood bar is beautiful (and made by hand by the owner). And the cocktails. Oh the cockitails! They're marvelous. Because I'm smart, I went with three friends and so was able to sample a lot of the cocktails on the menu, but if I had to pick one to recommend, it'd definitely be the blood orange gin drink (I'm bad with names). Oh and this summer - they're opening up a patio. I envy those St. Olaf kids a bit. read more

Amazing! I love unique distilleries and this sure fits the bill. Loon liquors is set in a warehouse/office building sort of venue, which is very unique and makes entering a little questionable. Once you follow the well marked signs you open into a lofty space with tons of seating and a great view of the distilling process. The cocktails are reasonably priced, around $7-11, and the flavor profile is very complex, yet easy to drink. I normally don't like gin and the bartender suggested I try a gin based cocktail anyways. It was great! They're not lying when they say their gin is actually drinkable, yet flavorful enough for your average gin lover. I ended up moving towards whiskey and couldn't find a drink I didn't like. I would definitely recommend venturing over here if you're traveling through or find yourself in the mood for a great cocktail! read more

I have visited Loon 5 times over 3 years when visiting Northfield on business. Tucked away in a warehouse on the edge of Northfield, looking up at one college from the entrance, and out toward the river on the back patio, walking in to see a working distillery with an evolving array of fermentation tanks and white birch stored in the rafters, I am always pleasantly surprised. Every time I stop by, proprietor Simien has further built the business. As an organic gardener, I appreciate his commitment to his own or locally sourced ingredients for the liquor he crafts as well as the bitters and the sodas. Their cocktails are imaginative, beautifully and sometimes whimsically concocted and always fairly priced. Since they are a busy distillery that now sells botles to over 400 stores throughout the state of MN, they are only open for retail Thursday through Saturday. Treat yourself. Go. The staff is superb. Funky little out of the way start up in an industrial park. Pretty bare bones but they're trying! Tons of innovative cocktails, nothing more than $8. The creativity of the drinks is startling and they taste pretty darn good. Downfall- hardly anyone in there when we went, around 5 on a Friday, and it took the bartender 10 minutes to make two cocktails (one of which was a plain ol' gin and tonic). They only had two items on their snack list. A fifteen buck cheese and sausage plate or mixed nuts. We ordered the nuts to nosh with our high octane cocktails. Oops, out of nuts. On a Friday night. The patio, though small, offers a good view of the neighboring St.Olaf college on one side, on the other, storage barrels...ugh... a cheap solid fence could easily cover that eye sore.
