I used this practice to do a PPE on a Thoroughbred. I was not able to attend the PPE appointment. The vet doing the exam did reach out to me after doing some initial soundness exams, and we decided to do a few x-rays to follow up on some findings. After the exam was done and the report was sent to me, I bought the horse. I get it home and at my very first appointment with my personal vet, they realized this horse was not the horse the sellers told me it was. It is 12 years old instead of 7. There was no effort made to verify the identity of the horse during the PPE appointment. Loomis Basin did not scan for a microchip, or look for a lip tattoo, or make an attempt to estimate the age of the horse based the teeth. Now I am attempting to get in touch with someone in the office about this. I have called four times in the last three weeks, and am still waiting to hear something from their management. Hello, My name is Meghan and I live out in Brentwood CA. Yesterday my vet Dr. Mika Frederickson came out and did a lameness exam and injections on my 16-year-old appendix. She is so laid back, knowledgeable, smart, and friendly. She was so kind to my horse and even allowed our special needs program to watch her do the exam on my animal (I have a child with autism, so my horse is very used to having high energy around). I highly recommend her. She's fair, patient, and reasonable. She understands the difference between helping the horse and also understanding when medical intervention is no longer "helping" the horse. I appreciate that so much. My horse has been so tender in one of her hooves, that there are days she can hardly put weight on it and hops around her field. My farrier suspected damage within her hoof and suggested that I get an X-ray. I made an appointment with Loomis, to do just that. The two ladies who saw her refused to X-ray her, and had trouble spotting the lameness, even asking me which leg it was in. They then told me that they're not "lameness experts" and recommended I see one. I was under the impression that this was what why I brought my horse all the way here... I asked to see one, and they just ignored me and gave me this advice "you can walk and trot her, but don't ride her if she seems uncomfortable" Unless you can see De La Cruz, just go somewhere else. Update: Received a call from loomis basin today stating that if I don't take my review down, they will no longer treat my animals. Fine by me, I wouldn't trust any business who uses intimidation and abandonment of care as a tactic to manipulate reviews. read more

I generally prefer to use small private practices, so I have not had many experiences with Loomis. However, I had an emergency on 11/9 and needed help, so I called Loomis. The woman who took my call, Alex, was absolutely remarkable - professional, efficient, and caring. She had to make a couple of phone calls to secure the service that I needed, so (especially not being a regular client!) I had no way to be sure that she would even call me back. Not only did she call me back, but she did so promptly, which demonstrated that she was taking my emergency seriously and working swiftly to make sure I was helped. As a former supervisor of veterinary support staff, I can't help evaluating all CSRs and technicians who assist me (usually I keep it to myself ). Alex is someone I would have wanted on my team - efficient, understanding, professional, and kind. In addition to the excellent service I had from Alex, I was impressed with the speed with which LBEMC addressed my problem. And to my great surprise, the price was not only reasonable but I still can't understand how they could make it so cheap - they can't work for free! I see the negative posts but my experience has been positive. I've taken my horses here a few times now, emergency call that hauled to them that cost me 2,000 dollars for them to give electrolytes and a couple x rays, and for them to tell me nothing is wrong. Second is I had a vet come to see if there was a cancer growth on my boys sheath, she said he needed surgery ASAP and that it is a cancer growth , then confirming a different doctor was going to do surgery, next thing to do was to take him there, did that, first appointment of the day, they were an hour and a half late to even get to my horse, and mind you , they don't allow the horse to get out of the trailer, doctor comes, sedates him, says NOPE doesn't need surgery but I still had to pay for the visit fee and sedation plus stall!!?? . So waited for sedation to wear off, then my trailer broke on top of that. They trailered him back later in the day for 350 DOLLARS to get him to el dorado hills. I don't know if it's just me but The least you could do is void the trailer fee or the doctor visit since it was your doctor who wrongfully diagnosed him, has me trailer him all the way there to just get turned away/cancelled. TAKE YOUR HORSES TO UC DAVIS . I should have never gotten involved with Loomis, they are awful. I have nothing but praise and gratitude to the team at UC DAVIS for taking such good care of my boys at a very fair/reasonable price with PROFESSIONALISM and truly caring employees. read more

To put it plainly, the staff here are unethical and will take advantage of you financially if they can. Do not trust them with any remote services and clearly outline what you will pay for. I made the mistake of using them to conduct a PPE remotely. I didn't get to talk to the vet before the exam but sent an email describing my use-case for the horse in question and expressed interest in getting some imaging done depending on the outcome of the initial exam. After the initial exam the vet called me but I was not able to step out of my office and answer the phone in time. The vet left a voicemail saying the horse was definitely lame. I tried to call back right away but it was a blocked number. I sent an email saying the number was blocked and I could not get a hold of her to discuss next steps and got no response. I was left wondering what was going on for days...well apparently what was going on was they decided to go ahead and do almost $4k worth of x-rays and bloodwork on a lame horse. Given my stated use-case for the horse this was like a surgeon continuing to operate on a dead patient. I have done over a dozen PPEs remotely around the country and never had an experience like this. Not only would the [ethical] vet typically confirm with me first before doing imaging, they would also discuss the precise images needed so that they weren't wasting my money. Not Loomis Basin; They saw the opportunity to bilk me in my absence and just absolutely went for it. I was left paying for like 60 xrays on horse who could have been eliminated from the running with a trot circle. read more

Everybody has a legal right to request and receive an itemized bill for veterinary services, and denying that raises serious ethical and consumer protection concerns. The cost discrepancies Jetara describes--where charges far exceed regional averages--deserve accountability and transparency. I truly hope LBEMC reconsiders its practices, because trust in veterinary care must be built on compassion and honesty, not financial exploitation. Langdon Fielding assigns recent graduates and students on complicated cases that will charge thousands for their experiments basically. some vets were ok but some horrible attitudes and could care less ineffective treatment. i had to figure out my own solution. His office staff - namely Debbie was rude to me and another person i know complained about her attitude too. i confronted Fielding about it and he banned me put me in a bad spot because there were no other large hospitals w equipment. the techs were also ridiculous i had to tell the tech how to pick up feet and tech couldnt even hold my horse. i know lots of stories about people that have used their services overcharged for things that were not even the core service/treatment so they r broke before they can even get the treatment. vets like this r the reason pet owners cant even do it. many experienced that r not part of fieldings monopoly know about them. California not only has a vet shortage but a competent vet shortage as older ones sadly retire or leave area. this was in 2018. i was so upset i couldnt even do review until now. it was wrong for the horses and injustice to caretakers as well. read more

Staff did not properly sanitize for my horses catheter and did not keep it clean causing a septic blood clot after she recovered from surgery, which they then charged an additional $4,500 to save the horse from THEIR deadly mistake. Then instantly started charging $100/month interest. This week I was helping haul a horse and Loomis Basin lied to the receipient and told her that the coggins would be back by Friday afternoon. It's Saturday afternoon and still no coggins, jeopardizing the transport of this horse. So whether you need something simple or something complicated, AVOID LOOMIS LIKE THE PLAGUE. In August my horse had lacerated his leg and it didn't look like it was healing very well there had been swelling, heat and he was very off. My regular vet was out of state and unavailable so his exchange referred me to Loomis Basin Equine. They sent Kaitlan Coyes to examine my horse and I could not be there because of a family emergency. I didn't want to reschedule because the owner and two employees were there to take my horse out and answer any questions. I asked the owner and trainer what the diagnosis was or what was said by the person treating my horse? They all said that the vet never even touched my horse or did any kind of lameness test and that my horse was fine. On the other hand she went into great detail about my horse being underweight and that issue was already being addressed. I called Loomis Basin 3-4 times over the next week asking for a report and a phone call from the person who did nothing but said my horse was fine. I never got a call but in October I received a report and a bill for $188 I knew my horse was lame and took him to see my regular vet and my vet Xrayed and found a fracture!! What kind of a vet is going to say my horse is fine and really he was far from being fine. I will take that inept "vet" to court if they don't stop trying to collect from me because they won't get one cent from me. I have witnesses and I'm ready to go to court. Please do not respond with some stupid comment like the ones left for some of the other reviews. You can start by only sending people who are good at what they get paid for. Now I know why I have heard so many bad and horrible stories about this place. This place has saved me 4 times! Best service ever! Super professional with accurate radiograph analysis. I have done 4 PPE with them or had them to review my PPE from other vets and they found OCD in all 4 horses While the other vets didn't catch it. I can't thank doctor Coral White enough. She's an amazing human being. She has gone above and beyond to help us and from bottom of my heart I wish her nothing but only good things. I had a very tight deadline with a seller and I was under pressure and stress to pay off the horse fully in one hour and she assisted me last second and helped us to get the radiographs reviewed and find the OCD. TOTAL RIP-OFF! I took my gelding to Loomis Basin to receive an injection. He was previously diagnosed at Western Performance in Ione, and they provided all the records, xrays and MRI. At Loomis they charged me $423 for what WP did for $246. I was charged $45 for a tube of banamine that you can get on Chewey for $27. In total I was charged 71% more and the vet at Loomis was snotty. I WISH I NEVER BROUGHT MY HORSE HERE!! On January 17th I called in for an antibiotic for my horse and never got it. I was told someone was going to give me a call back and no one called. On Monday I called for a doctor to come out, and they sent a doctor out without the medication that we needed. I couldn't believe this especially after being charged $500 just for someone to come out. Gabby who was the doctor that came out, did a fabulous job while she was out, it was just unfortunate that they didn't provide her with the medication. I called at 4am the next morning concerned that I still didn't get the correct medication that I had asked for all week and wanted to speak to a manager. Never received a call back from the manager. I took my horse there on 01/23/2024 in the morning. I called around 3:30 that day to check on him and I was told that someone would call me back. At around 4:30 since I haven't heard back from anyone I called back and I was told the same thing that someone would call me back and no one did. The next morning on 01/24/2024 I called back and was told someone should be calling me this morning and if I didn't hear anything back, call back in 20 minutes. Again no call. Last night I decided to go out unannounced because I felt things weren't right. Sure enough when I got there, I see my horse laying there with his face smothered onto the wall with him only breathing out of one nostril. I asked them why didn't they move him and they said they tried. I also noticed that my horse was drenched in water from head to toe because the room was so hot that he was sweating. I asked for a bucket of water immediately and took the bucket of water myself to cool him off. I then asked them if they had air conditioning and why wasn't it on. They then turned on the air conditioning after he had already been there over 30 hours burning hot. The room was like a sauna. You could physically see the steam in the air. They advised me that it was okay to let him rest laying down. They told me that if they pick him up that it would agitate him and could cause complications. I then asked them how long he could lay down and I was told 6-8 hours. At the time when I arrived and the time that they said he was laying down approximately 3 hours had gone by. They said that they were going to let him rest and get him up in the morning around 8am the next day and then give me a call. They thought I had left at that point, but because of the condition that I found him in I decided to stay without them knowing it. 45 minutes went by and then decided to go check to see if they turned the air on. When I went to his room door I saw blood that wasn't there before on the floor. I then noticed that they were doing something to him. When I opened the door he had been moved from the wall in which he couldn't breathe and was placed in the middle of the floor where he should have been from the beginning. He appeared to be cooled off since they turned the air on. They said that they were going to let him rest and then I left. Not even 25 minutes went by and they called to tell me that he couldn't breathe well and he had died. I then learned that horses shouldn't be laying down for any extended periods of time and not definitely laying down for 3 hours. They left him there with his nose pressed against the wall having trouble breathing through one nose since the other one was blocked. A customer shouldn't have to tell them to turn on the air, move his face off the wall or ask for a bucket of water to cool any animal down that's brought there. They went to charge me $2500 the first day and $1700 the next day when the horse was in bad conditions. We had a horrible experience with this facility. There was a constant lack of communication and miscommunication. There was a lack of empathy and a lack of caring by our doctor. We brought in a very sick pet, baby goat that our family loved immensely. Immediately he and us were treated like a number..and not like people. They had no compassion and no explanation of what was being done and no real review of his symptoms to make a proper diaganosis. He had been treated by another vet in Auburn, until his symptoms became severe and we needed IV fluids. We then brought him to Loomis Basin and they treated him and unfortunately he died that night. We got a call at night telling us he died...Unfortunately....I regret this now..I asked if they could hold him for us until we were able to pick him up to bury him. The next day I got a call by Dr. Rhodes, saying that they were not going to release him to us because he showed neurological symptoms and they were going to send him off to be rabies tested. She said there was no way around it. I assured the doctor that there was no chance of rabies, as he was a pet, had no access to wild animals, was in a fully enclosed area and had never had a bite. The disease our previous vet thought he had, Listeriosis, also progresses to neurological symptoms, as do MANY other goat diseases. On Monday, I contacted the state rabies board and the county health department and both of these agencies assured me that the vet was NOT REQUIRED to send him off for rabies testing. The vet. Dr. Rhodes..told me she was. She also said she would " try to find out if there was a way around it" and would call me back.....She never tried to call me back and the county tried to contact her to discuss that she did not have to send Eddie, but she never called them back either.. Instead, later that day..when she was supposed to call me, the front office called me and told me that they had already sent him off to the Necropsy lab in Davis and he was gone. I called the necropsy lab and they said that I did not have rights to the results..only the vet did.......Seriously...this is my goat..I signed nothing...I gave no permission....I am soooo frustrated........ I also found out that they really had not sent him off on Monday...and they had misinformed me.....they did not get him in Davis until Tuesday...so we could have seen him and we could have prevented this..if the doctor actually did what she said she would and not have lied to us. I WILL NEVER go back to this place and I will continue to tell the story about how awful they treated us and our goat. They stole our chance to bury our pet. They did ¨allow¨ us to pay to get him cremated...which at first they said we could not do either.....That is OK...but cremation goes against ALL my daughter and I believe in... I am extremely disappointed and sad..they made an extremely devastating time for us, 100 times more devastating...we just wanted our Eddie back... Today we got the test results back. He DID NOT have rabies.....just as I suspected..... but thanks Loomis Basin for destroying his sweet body for your own reasons..... read more

This a review from the world's most anal-retentive and worried first-time horse owner. Without LBEMC; and Dr Grace especially, I would be lost. They have made navigating a bumpy and unexpected road with my very special horse Apollo totally bearable. I purchased a beautiful and incredibly sweet former jumper who unbeknownst to me had/has thin soles, pedal osteitis, navicular changes and chronic laminitis (DO PRE PURCH HOOF X-RAYS PEOPLE!) I have had them out probably 8-10 times in 2.5 years for mild to severe lameness, severe skin issues, swollen sheath, abscesses, you name it. And I always have to treat any lameness issues urgently because of the time sensitivity with potential founder, so, you know, TIME TO PANIC EVERYBODY Loomis Basin, from the get-go and for every single urgent visit, has never taken longer than a few hours to get to me and my horse. Often, it's within 1/2 an hour to an hour in the more frightening instances. When I call in a concern, the poor girls in the front office don't deal with the nice, pleasant me, they get the panicked and impatient me. Which is awful-and I know- because I do their job in small animal medicine and have worked emergency. It's no fun but they are always prompt and professional and calm. Dr. Grace Monmaney was sent to see my horse fairly early on in the lameness saga; she has since became my voice of reason, confidant and friend in caring for this incredibly sweet yet challenging horse. She recognizes my level of worry and stays calm always, while acknowledging that my fears are valid but not to panic. She takes precautions with him but also treats him like a normal horse, which keeps me rooted in the reality that he has special needs but could be much worse. She has a genuine affection for him which I know can be hard when you have multiple patients. Dr. de la Cruz has been amazing. He assessed Apollo early on as well, and he and LBEMC farrier Jesse worked together for an entire 1/2 a day doing X-rays and trimming and proper shoing so that we could establish a healthy baseline for soundness. He has more recently been involved with Apollo again and the kindness and affection he shows for one of the more frustrating species of patient makes it evident that he seriously loves what he does. He is endlessly patient and gentle. His RVT Kristen is equally helpful and knowledgeable. I have had experiences also with Dr. Ross and Dr. Jacobs and they have both been so easy to talk to, patient and effective. Dr. Jacobs does Apollo's teeth and Dr. Ross helped us with a painful hoof abscess. I would trust either of them in any situation. They also do my vaccines, X-rays, ultrasounds and teeth floating routinely and affordably. We are so very lucky to have Loomis Basin Equine so close by. It helps a worried horse owner tremendously to know that they care so much and I applaud them for the amazing group of professionals they have. read more

My horse Bo was there for about four and a half weeks with various issues- a gastric impaction, a facial fracture, and a case of salmonella. The staff is WONDERFUL. Drs. Major, Deane, and Merari helped us take care of him and were infinitely patient in answering all my many questions about his treatment and prognosis every step of the way. Fabulous techs include Jess, the two McKenna's, Leslie, Bailey, Joanna? And a few others whose names I have forgotten, but whose contributions were no less helpful. My mare came down with cellulitis in April of 2017. I have had horses all my life and never heard of them being able to get this bacterial infection (I knew humans could contact it). Dr. Kim Hauck was my vet through the whole stressful and exhausting journey. My main concern was getting my horse healthy enough to ride again, even if it meant no more showing. My pet goat has been sick since March of 2021. The vets in my area didn't know what was wrong and the recommended going to UC Davis. UC Davis thought she had eosinophilia enteritis and they put her on steroids. My goat did not get better so I took her back to UC Davis. The staff at UC Davis were very rude and didn't give me any information about what could be wrong with my goat. They accused me of abusing her because she is small and thin (which is why I had been bringing her to vets for months). I told the vet in my area that I needed to find a better vet. I needed a Dr. House for animals. By this time the vet in my area joined Loomis Basin Equine center as another office. I talked with Dr. Diane Rhodes and she advised me to get X-rays and do bloodwork to check her untried levels, blood chemistry and to get a cbc. The X-rays showed that my goat had something in her rumen. Her surgery was scheduled a little over a week later. Dr. Errico did the surgery and took a bunch of stuff out of my goats rumen. The staff were very kind and took great care of my goat. My goat is recovering from surgery and is already a lot better than she was before. I wish I had found this place sooner. From now on all of my animals will go here if I need a larger animal vet. read more

We've had Loomis Basin Equine come out to our ranch on multiple ranch calls for colic, open wounds, and teeth floating. They are 24-7...and believe me, that has been a lifesaver for our horses. Dr. De La Cruz and Dr. Wilson are especially awesome. We can never thank them enough for their help with our 32-year-old gelding. So it starts with PPE on my horse Travis he passes but a say later xrays show bad old abscess breeder at pie dream farms fails to find and treat it and now needs surgical debridement. Dr majors dies debridement then recovery at LBEMC farrier Valenzuela throws dr majors foot protector in dirt during farrier work thereafter needs second debridement. Fast forward I have checks on my horse turf two years xrays etc. all clears then four splints injuries no explanation of problem. Travis is 5 years older a new injury can't send him back to loomis as they don't have stand up mRI so sends to Uc Davis fir that they put him on a program he gets PET scan in addition to MRI . Takes a few days to get MRI report but over 60 days to get PE scan report and only when send Travis back to Brenda Beem rehab. Then Taft Day get released report for PET scan shows imbalanced foot by farriers Souza worked with dr majors at LBEMC. I'm out of the area and needed a pre-purchase exam. Dr Diana Stoba came out and did a through exam. As the horse keep being sound, we proceeded to do over $800 in X-rays. The x-rays showed either advance hock disease or birth defects. At age 4. Not that we could tell, not being vets. What she did say was that the horse had some hock "issues". But our vet reviewed the films and said "do not buy this horse!" Yet Dr Stoba said the horse was fine for my 14yr old who wanted an all purpose horse with maybe a few schooling shows in both English,western,low jumping classes. This horse would have gone lame and broken my kids heart. read more

I'm disappointed to leave less than a 5 star review for LBEMC, particularly because everyone else seems to have had such a great experience here. I too have had mostly good experiences with the veterinarians themselves, however I am completely frustrated with the administrative side. My concerns started with my first appointment two years ago, when I made an appointment to have my horse scoped for ulcers. No one told me how long he had to be pulled off of feed (he lives on pasture) so I only pulled him for a few hours before the appointment. This led to a completely wasted appointment and 2 hour round-trip drive when the vet said he had too much grass in his stomach to see if ulcers were present. In this instance, I was willing to accept some responsibility, as I probably should have investigated how long to pull him off the pasture myself. But...it still would have been nice to have been told by the staff when I made the appointment. I also had an allergy test done on my older gelding, and we decided to try allergy shots. I was told it would take a few weeks for them to come in. Six weeks later, I called LBEMC because I hadn't heard anything, and they told me the shots had been sitting in their pharmacy for about 3 weeks. In June of this year, I made an appointment for the same older gelding, and when I had a question about the nature of the appointment, was told that a vet would call me back. I did not hear anything so called the next day, and they had no record of me making an appointment or having asked for a return call. It took three phone calls altogether on this occasion to get the appointment made, and I still didn't get an answer to my question until the actual appointment. Then in October I received an email saying there was a free travel day to my area that Friday, so I called and made an appointment for Friday at 4. Fast forward to Friday at 4:15, and I call LBEMC to confirm the vet is on their way. That's when they tell me they made the appointment for NEXT Friday. Which probably could have been caught if they had confirmed the date (i.e. October 12th, rather than saying 'Friday') OR if they had an email or text confirmation system for their appointments. But the last and most incredibly frustrating straw for me was last Saturday, October 13th. I noticed my 26 year old gelding had copious amounts of snot coming out of his nostrils, and I called LBEMC at 9am, concerned. I was assured a veterinarian who was working that day would call me back. At 12:30pm that day I called again, and the person I spoke with said that the vets were out at appointments, and she would personally check with them when they returned to make sure one of them had given me a call back. It's now the evening of October 19th and they have yet to return my phone call. read more

I have used Loomis in the past for vaccinations as well as dental work. But when I brought my mare in for a lacerated tendon, I was told the worse. No good news, all negative thoughts. Didn't stitch up the wound, didn't ultrasound, and still charged $1800. Outcome given by them: pasture sound at the BEST. Otherwise, euth was to be considered. I was absolutely heartbroken. She was putting weight in the leg and was not very lame at the second check up. Still, no positive outcomes. They had me buy soft ride boots, $300. Then, went to a specialist in Ione, he wondered why she received such a grim diagnosis?? Also, ditch the boots. Only need is for horses that are totally non weight bearing. He did an ultrasound, stitched her up, and rehab was set in place. Loomis said 8 months MINIMUM stall rest. They wouldn't/couldn't even ultrasound or stitch her up. Specialist wants me to hand walk (even ride) on soft ground to prevent mechanical inhibition of the limb due to scar tissue. The horse is off Bute and is continuing to improve. I spent $800 at the specialist. He gave me a new positive outlook that if we work hard, we could trail ride!!! With such an awful prognosis from Loomis, I couldn't find hope that she would be even pasture sound. I just feel like Loomis gave me a total negative view when all she did was improve by the second appointment. read more
