Rick went through them very carefully over a period of about a year, in some cases, playing them through before deciding what to pay me. I've been VERY pleased with the way I was treated and what he's paid me for my collection. I'm expecting a check for the last box in the next month or two. When I came in a few weeks ago I was the only one inside and was looking for Queen - Hot Space. Who I assume to be the shop owner knew he didn't have it, but showed me the Queen section and I walked out with The Game. There was also a flyer at the checkout area advertising a record sale going on at USF, so props for advertising other record finding events. Everything isn't here. It's a local vinyl shop that has so much to look through, and if you're into that then this is the record shop for you. It gives me the thrill of thrifting back in 2007-2016, but for records. I walked out with international vinyls showcasing music from Brazil and Nicaragua last weekend, but finding the Thriller album was icing on the cake. I wasn't really looking for it, but there is a Jackson 5 section showcasing many of the Jackson 5 albums and their individual projects. Service - I had great service the first time I went because no one else was there. The second time I went, the service was still good but being that it was busy, he pointed me to the exact locations I could find what I was looking for if it was there. I feel like he really knows his shop, and that in itself is valuable. There are many, many vinyls. They're organized as well.

Truthfully, I do think I'm just going to order it online because it has been so hard to just find it in stock in store. I've held off because I just want to buy it in store, and no not at an Urban Outfitters or some other large chain of stores. Anyway, I ended up buying Diamond Life and People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm. They didn't have a collection of Maxwell at that moment if I remember correctly, but that got me to looking through The Beatles section and each member's solo albums. Sad to say, I couldn't find a record with the single Silly Love Songs by Paul McCartney, though, I did go in blindly looking for it. So, I asked the owners about it while buying my records. They had it in the back and, not sure of the quality they tossed it in for free. It was very nice. They have a scratch free record guarantee, which I applaud, but the complimentary add in was very much appreciated. I've come again and brought a friend and we've both bought a couple to a few records. The last time I went there was an Anderson Paak collection. I wish they had Malibu, but they did have Ventura. I strongly contemplated, but ended up getting Childish Gambino's "Because the Internet." Prices - they're not even bad. Trust me. They have tapes and cds too. I like to dig, and this store satisfies that. Conveniently located near Rockridge BART, there's a second hand thrift store in the area, plenty of eateries, Trader Joe's a couple blocks up, and other mini shops along the way. It's worth stopping in and checking out especially if planning a day in this area.

ABSOLUTE GEM This is…read morea hidden gem of a record store. It is very close to the corner of San Pablo Avenue and Solano Avenue. It is a carefully curated, discerning selection of wonderful music. The owner, David, is a terrific guy will gladly help you with all of your music needs. He is really knowledgeable. He even sells rock memorabilia, including original 3 day admission tickets to the Woodstock festival in 1969. Check this place out. You won't be disappointed. YES, their prices…read morecan be a bit high, but if you're shopping in there, then you know this already, and you probably know that many of the records they stock are hard to find, and always in great shape. Not to mention you're buying from a local/small business. Vinyl WAL-MART, it ain't. Stranded has a beautifully curated selection of JAZZ records (amongst other genres: folk, rock, punk). Probably the best in the Bay (concerning Jazz) for the size of the store. I've found quite a few hard-to-find, and rare Jazz records there. Every time I go in there (once or twice a month) I find something that I can't pass up. As for all the people complaining about the staff being rude, stand-offish etc., just try saying HELLO once in a while, or maybe asking for a recommendation. You'll find that the staff at Stranded are more than happy to talk shop with you, and connect you with something that might strike your fancy. Courtesy goes both ways in this world. Real recognizes real. The shop also runs an amazing reissue label called: Superior Viaduct. Stop in there, and check out their wares, I'm sure you'll find something you enjoy.

I also frequent the shop in the SF Mission District and have visited the NYC Lower East Side location. What makes Stranded unique is that it feels like a well curated shop of eclectic music. They carry new and used genres - Jazz, Rock, R&B, Hip Hop, Electronic, African, Reggae, Soundtracks, etc.. It's always a pleasure to stop bye because you never know what you will find. So be prepared to spend some time there if you are a true digger. The guys in the shop are also pretty friendly and welcoming. It also helps that the shop is located on a nice stretch of College Avenue in Oakland that has a lot to offer and close to Rockridge BART Station - shopping (groceries, hardware, bookstore, bakery, coffee/tea, home decor, etc.) restaurants and bars at different price points. They also have a small couch that can come in handy if your friend or partner just wants to hang out while you are browsing. Prices can vary and are comparable to other record shops. Anyone that enjoys vinyl would be well advised to check out this shop !

So, I decided to head in since I was around there to ask... One of the newer associates was very nice and helpful as much as she could be, but the other, Cam I believe her name was, was rude for absolutely no reason at all, unrelated to my issue but I heard Cam straight up lie to a customer on the phone while I was waiting for help telling the person that she couldn't help because it was a "big" store and it was SO busy she couldn't offer them the assistance they were asking for. It was me and one other person in the store browsing...she had time and I was being very patient. She just didn't want to be bothered. I guess their preorders are separately handled and sent over from a warehouse - which I didn't know, and my order wasn't ready. I found the vinyl I ordered on the wall and asked a simple question of if I could just purchase that one and they could cancel the order I placed for pick up since I don't live in the area. Instead of a customer-first answer (I would have even accepted a kind "I'm sorry, it's against our policy, we can't do that") I was met with attitude and blatant annoyance by Cam. It was as if I was being scolded rather than kindly informed of their process. Good thing there's lots of other really cool record shops around these days. Just recently my teen daughter dragged out a plastic tote full of my old vinyl. It's a combo of my…read morevinyl and my parents. So I decided to pull out the turntable that my hubby bought me a few years back that converts to mp3. I have been too lazy to learn how to do this, but it also is a lovely turntable. Take daughter's inquisitiveness about the vinyl plus the turntable I've never used and now you've got a retro party. The kid had a soccer game at El Cerrito HS yesterday late afternoon and we decided with friends (daughter on the same team) to have dinner out and found Elevation 66. It took a few to park and when we did my daughter called me over and said "Look! There's a record store down here!" It was only 4:45pm and a bit too early for dinner just, we noticed the open door and walked on down the alley and into Mod Lang. WOW! What a great store! The shop manager was really nice and helpful. She instructed us on the layout of the store after a while. I immediately stopped poking around the middle section and went to the green wall for the promise of 80's music. :) The prices were reasonable and there was a great selection. I picked up a new Echo and the Bunnymen album. Of course I immediately thought of the scene in High Fidelity with Jack Black. I probably should have looked for a Jesus and Mary Chain album to go with it, but I was risking being cliche already. My daughter found an Ella Fitzgerald she had to have and we both reveled over finding a Louis Armstrong and His Hot Five. SO happy we stumbled upon this by chance and plan to go back as soon as we can.
