    Great indie selection

Glad to see there are still great spots like this to buy vinyl as well as CD's, tapes, and DVDs in person. Awesome selection of many different music types. I was very happy with their selection of underground/indie artists, as well as jazz and classic rock. I could walk around the basement for hours given their selection. As an out of towner, I can tell this place has been an institution in Berkeley for a long time. Glad I checked it out! I was happy with my finds! Support your local record stores!

Back in the day, I was always up in this Rasputins, buying all the latest music along with old, hard to find music. I always used to enjoy that you could listen to the music before making a purchase, so I used to spend a lot of time in here doing just that. A lot of Bay Area Rappers would come here also to promote their new music, this was always going on. Music on cassettes, CD, or vinyl. Movies on VHS, DVD, or Blu Ray. Posters and T-shirts of all kinds, a lot of nostalgia in this place for me now, and I still enjoy coming here!!

I have decided to rate Rasputin's on a Pros - Cons basis. First off! I was in the area with my bike, and typically I'd visit Amoeba on any given day but today there was a artist signing and the line was all the way out the door and up the street a block. So! I walked down about a quarter mile to Rasputins which had no line at all. First Pro is the bike parking outside. Another Pro is the good music they had playing in the store. I like shopping to good music so I figured I'd go straight to my favorite area - the Hip Hop section. Pro: they have all the best artists from around the Bay Area. Huge selection even if you're not looking for Bay Area artists. Pro: Easy to find an artist with a particular release or a particular artist's available catalog because the artists are in alphabetical order on the shelf. Pro: The price! Rasputin Music is definitely affordable, you can commonly save some money here. Very fair pricing. Since the prices were so fair, I picked up 2 albums for about the price of 1! What a deal! I picked up Jonestown (Messy Marv, Blanco, and The Jacka) and The Tortoise And The Hare (Husalah and Blanco) for $3.95 each. Pro: everything was there that I had been looking for. Pro: Friendly and helpful staff Overall for yesterday's visit, I can't give any Cons. Definitely fun to come here!

Great spot to buy used/new physical media. I focused on DVDs and VHS but they have music too, of course. Pretty good prices and selection (although this location has a way better DVD selection than VHS... VHS is actually pretty small here). Don't forget to go downstairs. The staff is helpful and kind. And this particular location has a good vibe thanks to its location in Berkley right next to the campus.

When I came in a few weeks ago I was the only one inside and was looking for Queen - Hot Space. Who I assume to be the shop owner knew he didn't have it, but showed me the Queen section and I walked out with The Game. There was also a flyer at the checkout area advertising a record sale going on at USF, so props for advertising other record finding events. Everything isn't here. It's a local vinyl shop that has so much to look through, and if you're into that then this is the record shop for you. It gives me the thrill of thrifting back in 2007-2016, but for records. I walked out with international vinyls showcasing music from Brazil and Nicaragua last weekend, but finding the Thriller album was icing on the cake. I wasn't really looking for it, but there is a Jackson 5 section showcasing many of the Jackson 5 albums and their individual projects. Service - I had great service the first time I went because no one else was there. The second time I went, the service was still good but being that it was busy, he pointed me to the exact locations I could find what I was looking for if it was there. I feel like he really knows his shop, and that in itself is valuable. There are many, many vinyls. They're organized as well.

So I decided to pull out the turntable that my hubby bought me a few years back that converts to mp3. I have been too lazy to learn how to do this, but it also is a lovely turntable. Take daughter's inquisitiveness about the vinyl plus the turntable I've never used and now you've got a retro party. The kid had a soccer game at El Cerrito HS yesterday late afternoon and we decided with friends (daughter on the same team) to have dinner out and found Elevation 66. It took a few to park and when we did my daughter called me over and said "Look! There's a record store down here!" It was only 4:45pm and a bit too early for dinner just, we noticed the open door and walked on down the alley and into Mod Lang. WOW! What a great store! The shop manager was really nice and helpful. She instructed us on the layout of the store after a while. I immediately stopped poking around the middle section and went to the green wall for the promise of 80's music. :) The prices were reasonable and there was a great selection. I picked up a new Echo and the Bunnymen album. Of course I immediately thought of the scene in High Fidelity with Jack Black. I probably should have looked for a Jesus and Mary Chain album to go with it, but I was risking being cliche already. My daughter found an Ella Fitzgerald she had to have and we both reveled over finding a Louis Armstrong and His Hot Five. SO happy we stumbled upon this by chance and plan to go back as soon as we can.
